Apple releasing iOS 15.4, macOS 12.3, and other updates next week

Following Apple’s special event on Tuesday, the company announced that it will finally release iOS 15.4, watchOS 8.5, tvOS 15.4, and macOS Monterey 12.3 to all users next week.

iOS 15.4 has been available for developers as a beta release since earlier this year, and it brings multiple new features. For instance, the update enables Face ID while wearing a mask, as well as new Emojis, improvements to iCloud Keychain, and a new voice for American Siri.

For iPad users, both iPadOS 15.4 and macOS Monterey 12.3 include Universal Control – a long-awaited feature that lets users wirelessly control an iPad or even another Mac using the keyboard and mouse of their main computer.

Apple will seed iOS 15.4's final build next week, release candidate available for developers

Apple released iOS 15.4 beta in January, and after yesterday's "Peek Performance" event, the company announced it will release the iOS 15.4's stable build for compatible devices next week.

One of the biggest highlights of iOS 15.4 is it lets you unlock your iPhone with Face ID even when you are wearing a mask, meaning you'll no longer need an Apple Watch to unlock your iPhone without a passcode if you are wearing a mask.

Just did the update. Now whenever I restart my iPhone 13 I keep getting a pop up regarding a verification sms. I need to keep pressing accept or verify or something

iOS 15.4 update reportedly causing battery drain for some users

Earlier this week, Apple started rolling out iOS 15.4, alongside iPadOS 15.4, watchOS 8.5, macOS Monterey 12.3, tvOS 15.4, and HomePod Software 15.4. You can read more about the update here, but its biggest spotlight feature is the ability to unlock your phone using Face ID with a mask on. A nice gesture for users who don't own an Apple Watch - iOS 14.5 from last year originally introduced Face ID with a mask for iPhone users with an Apple Watch. The new Face ID only works on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 generation, though and is slower and less secure. So, let's call it a partial win.

Limited feature availability might be the least of iOS 15.4's issues as a growing number of people are reporting bad battery life after the OTA. Things like an iPhone 13 Pro Max only lasting for half a day. Or an older iPhone 11 dropping 80% battery charge in 24 hours with two hours of screen on time. And other similar reports.

Of course, the issue is far from universal, and some temporary battery woes are sometimes expected after an update. And iOS 15.4 might not look like a very major one, but apparently, it includes a whopping 39 vulnerability fixes. Still, these battery drain figures seem a bit high. Some users have theorized that Apple has started using the max 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate a lot more frequently. It sounds plausible, but it can't be the full explanation since only the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have ProMotion, and these are not the only affected models. Here's hoping the issues are resolved soon.

Now that you mention it, I've been thinking my 13 is a little heavier on battery. I figured it was because I used it more (can't recall specifically if I did).

Whoops, my iPad Air 3 updated before midnight and Siri somehow drained the battery from 100% to 0% in 5 hours.

I've recharged now and she isn't going haywire anymore thankfully, but I'll have to disable Siri Suggestions altogether if this keeps happening now.

No issue on the ol' SE though, still zipping fantastically.

Was wondering why my Apple Music wasn’t loading, seems once again Apple services are down, I wonder if this has anything to do with that war…

The Russians were thought to be considering cyber warfare and Apple was one of the most prominent companies that stopped all trade with Russia so it's a plausible theory.

Wouldn’t be surprising, I believe Google were hit last week to and if I’m not mistaken Apple rely on Google for a lot of their cloud computing.

Only knew about it because it was in the papers, but I didn’t experience any downtime. App Store, Music, iCloud, etc, were all fine.

Apple releases iOS 15.4.1 with battery issues fix for iPhone and iPad

After launching iOS 15.4 a couple of weeks ago, Apple is releasing iOS 15.4.1. This update should fix battery drain issues that iPhone and iPad users were experiencing with the previous version. Apart from that, Apple is also bringing updates for tvOS, watchOS, and macOS users.

Today’s build is 19E258. You can update your iPhone by heading to the Settings app, choosing General, then choosing Software Update.

Here are the release notes for iOS 15.4.1 for iPhone and iPad users:

  • Battery may drain more quickly than expected after updating to iOS/iPadOS 15.4
  • Braille devices may become unresponsive while navigating text or displaying an alert
  • Made for iPhone/iPad hearing devices may lose connection within some third-party apps
