The iPad to become a PC killer?

When the iPad can support everything a PC can, then yes. At the moment its just a big toy.
 
Sure, when you can fit three hard disks, two gfx cards, a hex core cpu, 8 gigs of ram, and a battery that can power all that. Oh, and don't forget the 24" widescreen monitor and surround sound speakers. Yeah, I'm definitely giving up my rig for an oversized iCrap phone.
 
2 aspects needs to be addressed before we can say iPad had anything to do with the decline in sales.

1 recent recession and recovery period.
2 did we hit a plateau in performance.

Then we will also have to look at what effects the cellphones had on the sales, before we can say iPad is killing the PC.
 
Quite possible I think. I know of more than a few people who, instead of upgrading their home computers, have instead opted for an iPad.
 
It's too early to make this call. The iPad and other tablets are purely consumption devices. You use it to consume and not to create.

A PC is both a consumption and creation device. Where PCs are used primarily to consume, then the iPad and other tablets will replace it. But this is not the case, and is unlikely top be the case, as people will want to create for themselves, as this task has become easier.

The iPad will take away the consumptive experience from a PC, but not replace it entirely. So, is it related to a decline in PC sales. You can't say that right now.
 
Firstly, I think it may be quite possible. The iPad does offer a lot of functionality the PC does, plus it is very portable.

I believe many consumers will rather go for the iPad.

Secondly, also agree that only time will tell if the iPad can be the cause of a dying PC market.

You're missing the fact that most PCs aren't like that. You may be a gamer (or around them a lot), so that's what you may be used to hearing about.. but as someone in IT sales, I can tell you that 98% of PC sales go to the ones who "just need a basic office PC for web browsing, email and the odd document here and there".

Out of those, the only thing the iPad isn't good at would be document editing (due to the lack of proper keyboard).

Having said that, I don't believe it's a PC killer - just a complimentary good that has definitely eaten into some sales.
 
Laptops failed where you hope the IPad will succeed, and Laptops much better specs, much much better.

To answer that question, no it won't. The IPad processors are dog slow and that is just the first problem. No one I talked to would be willing to settle for Intel Atom CPUs and the IPad CPU is slower than Atom CPUs. I'd go so far as to say the Atom CPU is unusable slow for anything but perhaps browsing (even there I'd like more).

Wouldn't even consider the IPad @ 2x1Ghz (sigh, compared to Atom 2x1.6Ghz x86 they have a long way to go). Not even comparing Intel Sandy Bridge which is out of order CPU and sitting @ 3Ghz+

I've also been thinking lately that we have definitely reached the point that desktop processors have reached a point where you can buy bottom of the barrel (not Atom I mean like Sandy Bridge, Nahalem, Lynfield, etc) or wait 3 or 4 years before upgrading with little to no impact on overall experience.

You might not but I create plenty of content on my iPad.

Did someone suggest you had to sell your existing rig to buy the iPad?
 
Haven't upgraded my pc in 5 years time instead I bought an xbox for all my gaming requirements.

Imo the rise of console gaming is a bigger factor than the iPad wrt pc sales.

Hehe, what I'd like to have. The reality is a bit different. Still, I use my current pc for video and image editing, all of which would be impossible on that underpowered device. And gaming of course. :D

I do a fair bit of photo editing on mine and plenty of people are doing video editing on theirs so it's obviously not "impossible". ;)

So, you plug an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, and graphics tablet into it to do that editing? And it runs Photoshop CS5 smoothly?

And no, I don't see the value of an oversized iFart.
 
Plain and simple answer, is there any household that has a iPad and no PC?

Till peoples homes only contain iPads and no PCs then you can make the statement that iPad killed the PC.
