The iPad to become a PC killer?

Hang on, I did find something you can do with an iPlonk you can't do with a PC!

Plain and simple answer, is there any household that has a iPad and no PC?
Yes, there are households that have an iPad and no PC. Considering you only need one to activate the iPad, and that can usually be done at point of purchase, it's shouldn't be that hard to fathom. :)

So, you plug an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, and graphics tablet into it to do that editing? And it runs Photoshop CS5 smoothly?
No, I don't need to, but you can use HDMI out as well as an external keyboard.

Why would you want to plug a graphics tablet into a touch screen device anyway?

An no, Adobe hasn't released CS5 for iOS. They seem to be concentrating on utilities to be used in conjunction with CS5. There are other image editing application that do run on iOS if you need them.

I have not seen or even heard of any. I am not talking about possibilities here.

After all, I do think Android should be more capable of this feat as it can access network stores via Smb and use media from it and even has access to keyboard and mouse support while it plugs into TVs and monitors. It's even able to connect to ADSL via pppoe.

So back to original argument, everybody I know, rich or poor and mixed with people all around the world, use tablets as a compliment device not instead of a PC.

I can imagine that the iPad might have had some influence on laptop/netbook sales, and even a little on PC sales. But it's definitely not a PC killer. Before the iPad, people who didn't really need a full sized PC or laptop might have bought it anyway. Now they may buy the iPad instead, but people who need a decent computer will still buy PC's and laptops. Any phrase with the word 'killer' in it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Dont discount something as a reality simply because you haven't heard of it ;)

I am not saying it can not happen, I am just saying that the mere 1 or 2 people that does it out of the millions on the planet doesn't allow it to become a PC killer. For the title to become a reality I am sure it should have become more of a norm and I would have surely seen or known people that does it.

So until that happens I would say yes it can eat into PC sales as people buy it instead of upgrading the home systems, It just needs a PC to much to be seen without one let alone be a killer.

Quite possible I think. I know of more than a few people who, instead of upgrading their home computers, have instead opted for an iPad.

As well. My aunt will be getting one since she saw my Galaxy pad.

Before I owned one I didnt see a need, now that I do own one I dont want to be without it.

According to another study...

“The explosion of computer sales when Windows 7 launched, as well as the huge increase in netbook sales at that time, are much more to blame for weak consumer PC sales growth than the iPad,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. “Overall it appears that the vast majority of iPad purchases to-date have been incremental to the consumer technology industry.”

According to the report only 14 percent of early iPad adopters (iPad owners of six months or more) abandoned a PC purchase for an iPad, and that dropped to just 12 percent of iPad owners who purchased over the past holiday season. In fact, cannibalization of netbooks is actually down by 50 percent among more recent iPad buyers, when compared to early adopter buyers.

+1

I think a combination of gaming consoles, netbooks and tablets are leading the PC decline, the average person really has to need for a powerful six core PC any more

You're missing the fact that most PCs aren't like that. You may be a gamer (or around them a lot), so that's what you may be used to hearing about.. but as someone in IT sales, I can tell you that 98% of PC sales go to the ones who "just need a basic office PC for web browsing, email and the odd document here and there".

This is the allure of tablets. Does 95% of what 90% of computer users need* - in an easy, convenient form factor. **

The iPad could become the $100 laptop beater by the end of the year depending on how fast technology improves.

Replace iPad with android then yes as there already are R1000 tablets on the market. I don't think Apple would release another tablet this year and you would need that to drop 1st gen to the price you mention.

Nice troll thread, but the answer is a resounding NO. "Experts" have been predicting the PC's imminent demise for years now; it still hasn't happened, and it isn't ever going to happen. The reason is simple; the PC offers far more bang for your buck due to being an open and competitive platform, unlike the smartphone/tablet market where a few select companies control the hardware and software, and charge massive markups on the products they sell.

Sure, as long as you don't need accuracy (Touch screens are ok, but your finger isn't as precise as a mouse or a dedicated graphics tablet with stylus), power or actually have to type more than a few minutes...

When PCs become illegal because they enable cyber terrorists and you are only allowed to use iPads with built in trackers and usage monitors to connect to the internet through government approved ISPs then it will become the PC killer :P.

Sure, when you can fit three hard disks, two gfx cards, a hex core cpu, 8 gigs of ram, and a battery that can power all that. Oh, and don't forget the 24" widescreen monitor and surround sound speakers. Yeah, I'm definitely giving up my rig for an oversized iCrap phone.

^^
This

An iPad could be a companion to a PC - not a PC killer.

I think as tablets become more powerful and "lighter" in weight with a huge selection of apps that can compete with existing PC apps.
Then they'll not a be a pc beater but will definitely be an "addition" to everyone's electronic collection.

I for one have to connect to our various server after hours to see if backups are running , restart server and update software etc.
I prefer sitting on my ass at my couch and using the laptop to do the above and it takes a while for the laptop to start and by the time you are actually working +-15min have gone by already.
A quick boot device like a tablet I should be able to be in and out of work server's by the time the laptop boot's into XP.

That or buy a faster laptop :)
