The Isuzu Thread

PRICING: New Isuzu MU-X arrives in SA to take on Fortuner, Everest

The second-generation Isuzu MU-X has landed on South African shores, and with it the Japanese manufacturer hopes to gain a better foothold in the large SUV segment that’s currently dominated by the Toyota Fortuner and, to a lesser extent, the Ford Everest.

Like the new Mazda BT-50, the Isuzu MU-X is based on the next-generation D-Max, which is due to be built locally from 2022, but unlike its bakkie cousin the new Isuzu wagon is imported from Thailand.

Isuzu will be offering a four-model range locally, all powered by a revised 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine that produces 140kW at 3600rpm and 450Nm from 1600 to 2600rpm. In all cases it’s paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox and customers can choose between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations.

Dealership sales will officially kick off at the beginning of December, with prices starting at R693 800 for the MUX 4x2 LS, which is also available in 4x4 guise for R771 600. R763 300 will get you the mid-spec LSE model, which is a 4x2 only, while the flagship 4x4 is badged Onyx and priced at R860 500.

The new Isuzu MU-X is a little pricier than its rivals, given that the Toyota Fortuner retails for between R599 000 and R837 100 (albeit with a smaller base engine at the lower end) and the Ford Everest occupies the zone between R558 600 and R833 500.

Standard across the range is a five-year/120 000km warranty and five-year/90 000km service plan, with service intervals pegged at 15 000km.

Isuzu announces pricing and specification for second-generation Fortuner-rivalling mu-X

• The all-new Isuzu mu-X debuted in South Africa and will go on sale this December.

• The vehicle is powered by 140kW 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine.

• The line-up is priced from R693 800.

The all-new Isuzu mu-X has arrived in South Africa and will officially go on sale in the first week of December 2021. Based on the popular D-Max bakkie, the SUV shares its engine, drivetrain and chassis with the next-generation bakkie that will go on sale in 2022.

The mu-X is powered by a 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine that offers 140kW and 450Nm. Power is sent to the road via a six-speed automatic transmission. The line-up consists of both 4x4 and 4x2 models. Three models make up the range, these being LS, LSE and ONYX. The range-topping Onyx model rides on 20-inch wheels, while the LSE and LS make do with 18- and 17-inch wheels, respectively.

ONYX and LSE models have dual-zone climate control with two separate HVAC units to provide individual temperature for each front seat occupant. All models have roof-mounted aircon vents for second and third-row occupants with independent fan speed control and air conditioning evaporator.

Overall summary

There's so much more to unpack with the new MU-X, such as its excellent new interior, comfy seats, large boot, and generous interior space. It has a new audio system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and revised ergonomics to ensure more effortless operation of the driving modes and safety systems.

We'll be unpacking more of the new MU-X technologies and upgrades with each model we evaluate in the coming months, so be sure to subscribe to our newsletter so you don't miss these test drives.

Here's the range and pricing of the 2021 Isuzu MU-X in South Africa:

  • LS 4x2 automatic – R693 800
  • LS 4x4 automatic – R 771 600
  • LSE 4x2 automatic – R763 300
  • Onyx 4x4 automatic – R860 500
After a few days of experiencing the LSE 4x2 model and Onyx 4x4 range-topper, we have to say that the Onyx model is the one that will capture your heart, as it did ours. It's expensive, but it's capable, packed with features, and comes with a decent warranty and service plan. We enjoyed the MU-X on the open road and along the rough and rugged mountain passes.

We think it's a solid contender in the segment if you're considering a Fortuner, Everest, or a Pajero Sport. Isuzu can unbundle the service plan from the vehicle's pricing for you (as per industry guidelines). You can ask the dealership for exact pricing when you enquire or test drive one.

The 2021 Isuzu MU-X might be the ideal vehicle to consider if you're downsizing from a multi-million-rand luxury SUV because it offers the looks, it provides the tech, and most importantly, it moves with grace and confidence and feels robust and solidly engineered.

New Isuzu MU-X (2021) Launch Review

Summary

There’s no doubt about it, the new Isuzu MU-X is a vastly improved product compared to its honest, but nonetheless basic, predecessor. It’s likely that Isuzu will achieve better sales success with this iteration of its Adventure/Leisure SUV, which will probably be helped by the local arrival of the highly-anticipated D-Max in April 2022.

Not only does the new MU-X look sharper and more purposeful in the metal, but its interior design and execution add up to a significant leap forward. It will not only please fans of the Isuzu brand, but perhaps entice buyers that are new to the market to take a closer look at the new MU-X.

On paper, the MU-X’s engine outputs fall short of what’s offered in the rivalling Fortuner and Everest, but, in our experience, the Isuzu’s ride/handling balance is right up there with the best in the segment. What’s more, buyers will definitely not feel short-changed in terms of the MU-X’s on-road performance. That being said, the new MU-X’s towing performance has yet to be tested.

As far as pricing is concerned, the range-topping MU-X Onyx at R860 500 is pricier than the equivalent offerings such as the Toyota Fortuner 2.8GD-6 4×4 VX (R837 100), Ford Everest 2.0Bi-Turbo 4WD Limited (R833 500), Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (R719 995) and Haval H9 (2.0T 4WD Luxury (R669 900), the latter of which looks like exceptional value in this company.

The MU-X’s sweet spot, however, appears to be the LS (from R693 800) and LSE (from R763 300) derivatives; they are more competitively priced against equivalent rivals, depending on whether you need 4×4 ability or not. We do, however, hope that Isuzu makes its IDAS driver assistance suite available on other MU-X derivatives in the future.

Isuzu offers a 5-year/120 000 km warranty and a 5-year/90 000 km service plan for added peace of mind and we strongly suggest that you book a test drive at your nearest Isuzu dealer.

DRIVEN: New Isuzu MU-X has a lot going for it, but it’s pricey

Behind the wheel of the ONYX over the old Montague Pass the advantage of four-wheel drive, easily done with a turn of a dial on the centre console, was very apparent with a more sure-footed drive over loose sand and rocks. If it was me I would opt for either of the 4x4 versions.

For a standard SUV the Isuzu MU-X impressed with its off-road prowess with decent articulation and minimal fuss over some fairly difficult obstacles. With diff lock engaged and the right lines you could have a lot of fun on a weekend 4x4 outing, with the added bonus of 800mm wading depth.

The new Isuzu MU-X has a lot going for it, including a braked towing capacity of 3.5 tons as the company focuses more on it’s leisure market vehicles. It remains to be seen though how it measures up against the competition when they start selling them in December, considering most of their direct competition undercuts them in price.

It comes with the Isuzu Complete Care package with a warranty of five years or 120 000 km.

Summary

Overall, the Isuzu MU-X looks and feels up to par with its segment rivals. It stands out and has become bolder. Pricing might be slightly higher than its segment rivals however this is because it is slightly better tech laden and has the biggest engine displacement. The increased dimensions has helped improved in ride quality as well as off-road capabilities. The generous spec on all models is also a huge bonus for buyers and we think that the second generation mu-X will do better than the first generation.

Isuzu releases D-Max X-Rider LTD

With the introduction of the 7th-generation D-Max mere months away, Isuzu Motors SA has released a trio of X-Rider Limited Edition derivatives of its current (8-year-old) bakkie, of which only 210 individually numbered units will be produced.

Following a R1.2-billion to upgrade its Struandale production facilities in Port Elizabeth (now known as Gqeberha) in 2019 and a delay of about a year owing to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Isuzu will finally launch its all-new D-Max range in South Africa in March 2022.

But, before then, Isuzu will avail the X-Rider Limited Edition in 2.5 HO X-Rider LTD 4×2 5-speed manual, 2.5 HO X-Rider LTD 4×2 5 speed Auto and 3.0 X-Rider LTD 4×2 6 Speed Auto guises.

First introduced in 2016 as a special value model in the then KB range, the X-Rider became a permanent fixture of the Isuzu model line-up in Mzansi as well as in other African markets. Although the 6th-gen D-Max is a, well, seasoned campaigner in the market, Isuzu’s bakkie range has continued to sell well based on its solid value proposition and enviable reputation for durability and reliability.

Although it was initially introduced in 2016 as a unique value-oriented model to the D-MAX range, the X-Rider proved popular with bakkie buyers in South Africa and has become a permanent fixture of the Isuzu model line-up both in SA and neighbouring markets. To celebrate the current generation's success and give South African D-MAX fanatics one last chance to own a unique version of the vehicle, the company is offering 210 individually-numbered units in this run-out phase of the bakkie.
