The facelifted Isuzu MU-X is coming to SA soon and we have pricing for the new flagship variant, the MU-X 3.0TD Onyx XT. Here’s what this top-spec adventure SUV will cost…

The facelifted Isuzu MU-X is expected to launch in South Africa in May 2025. Ahead of its official arrival, Cars.co.za has unearthed local pricing for the new flagship derivative, the MU-X 3.0TD Onyx XT. And it’s set to touch down as the first MU-X variant priced at over R1-million.

As a reminder, Isuzu’s refreshed 7-seater adventure SUV was revealed in Thailand in June 2024, around 4 months before Billy Tom, Isuzu Motors South Africa’s CEO and Managing Director, suggested to us that Mzansi would welcome a new “sexier” version of the MU-X at some point in 2025.

It’s official: new Isuzu D-Max EV revealed

The new Isuzu D-Max EV has been revealed, featuring a fully electric 4×4 powertrain with peak power of 140 kW and a claimed single-charge WLTP range of 263 km…

Meet the new Isuzu D-Max EV, the first fully electric version of the Japanese firm’s popular bakkie. Revealed at the 2025 Commercial Vehicle Show in the United Kingdom, the battery-powered pick-up has officially entered production in Thailand.

According to Isuzu, the first left-hand-drive units will reach “major” markets in Europe in the 3rd quarter of 2025. Production of right-hand-drive units is scheduled to start towards the end of this year, with sales likely to commence in the UK in 2026 before being “rolled out to other countries and areas based on market needs”.

For now at least, it seems unlikely the D-Max EV will be offered in South Africa. As a reminder, the diesel-powered D-Max for the local market in produced at Isuzu’s Struandale plant in the Eastern Cape, while this box-fresh EV version comes from the Samut Prakan factory in Thailand.

The new Isuzu D-Max EV is based on a “re-engineered” version of the standard RG-series bakkie’s platform and features a 66.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack allowing a WLTP range of 263 km (or up to 361 km of city driving). Europe will receive both extended- and double-cab body styles.

Isuzu says the D-Max EV is capable of accepting DC fast-charging speeds of up to 50 kW, moving the battery capacity from 20 to 80% in approximately an hour. Use a standard 11 kW AC charger, meanwhile, and it would theoretically take 10 hours to reach a full charge from zero.

Dual electric motors produce a total power output of 140 kW (43 kW fore and 97 kW aft) along with peak torque of 325 Nm (108 Nm up front and 217 Nm at the rear). The 4×4 EV bakkie has a claimed 0-100 kph time of 10.1 seconds and a top speed of “over 130 kph”.

Isuzu’s D-Max AT35 Brawler Updated With New Face

Billed as the ultimate expression of a purpose-built pick-up truck, the updated Isuzu D-Max AT35 has made its debut.

Along wth the reveal of the D-Max EV (electric vehicle) at the 2025 Commercial Vehicle Show in the UK, Isuzu made use of the occasion to unwrap the updated Arctic Trucks co-developed D-Max AT35.

The fresh-faced D-Max AT35 was revealed sporting Isuzu’s 1.9-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged oil-burner, which, in the UK, is tuned to produce 120 kW and 360 N.m of twisting force (increases of 10 kW and 10 N.m over the 1.9-litre turbodiesel available in South Africa.) Power is channeled to all four corners via a six-speed automatic transmission. (The D-Max AT35 features a shift-on-the-fly four-wheel-drive setup, replete with locking rear differential.) In addition, a new ‘Rough Terrain’ driver’s programme have been added to the driving modes.

As a reminder, the D-Max AT35 currently available in South Africa exclusively employs the Japanese manufacturer’s tried-and-tested 3.0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which churns out 140 kW and 450 N.m of torque, the latter of which on tap from 1 600 r/min.

Compared with the current D-Max AT35’s 33-, 34- and 23-degree approach, break-over and departure angles, the revised model sports approach, break-over and departure angles of 35, 34 and 22 degrees, respectively. In addition, while the updated D-Max AT35’s braked towing capacity matches that of the pre-facelifted model (3 500 kg), it boasts improved payload capacity — one tonne versus 660 kg.

As before, the updated D-Max AT35 features flared wheel arches; extended side steps, replete with new “heavy-duty” rubber treads; and 35-inch all-terrain rubber, among other items. To further enhance its off-road prowess, an Arctic Trucks Bilstein suspension arrangement is also present. .

Isuzu MU-X (2025) Launch Review

How much does the 2025 Isuzu MU-X cost in South Africa?

Isuzu MU-X 1.9TD LS 4×2 6AT R752 300
Isuzu MU-X 3.0TD LS 4×2 6AT R852 600
Isuzu MU-X 3.0TD LSE 4×2 6AT R886 700
Isuzu MU-X 3.0TD LS 4×4 6AT R939 500
Isuzu MU-X 3.0TD LSE 4×4 6AT R973 700
Isuzu MU-X 3.0TD Onyx XT 4×4 6AT R1 026 800

Prices correct in May 2025. The 2025 MU-X variants are sold with a 5-year/120 000 km manufacturer warranty (with roadside assistance), a 5-year/90 000 km service plan, and a 5-year/unlimited km anti-corrosion warranty included in their prices. Service intervals are every 15 000 km or 12 months.

Summary

These exterior and interior enhancements should bring the Isuzu MU-X back into the limelight. When you compare the pricing of the outgoing range with that of the facelifted line-up, you’ll notice the changes are very minor, which is very impressive, given the economic instability.

Not only is the value proposition of the MU-X undeniable, and even if the newcomer’s driving experience is much the same as that of its predecessor, there remains little to fault with Isuzu’s adventure SUV, other than the power deficit, which only becomes glaringly obvious under hard acceleration or if you’re towing.

Isuzu Motors SA president calls for government support to unlock new opportunities

Isuzu Motors South Africa is on the up and up, but President Billy Tom strongly believes there is room for improvement, especially on the African continent.

Tom was speaking in an interview with IOL and Independent Media at the recent launch of the company’s Isuzu MU-X

“It’s going very well, but we’re not immune to the challenges of South Africa. We went through Covid, fortunately, we were not as harshly impacted as some of the other manufacturers because the product we had played a big role. We were beneficiaries of the growth of e-commerce over the period," he said.

Opportunities

“We export only into Africa, and it has been good to us and being new, just over five years as Isuzu SA, we still maintain good relationships with Japan, so yes, we’re in a good space and excited about what lies ahead."

Tom says there are future opportunities on the horizon for the company.

“I’m working on convincing Japan that we are the anchor for Africa. With the African Free Trade Agreement, there’s a huge opportunity for us,” he said enthusiastically.

“The commercial space (Isuzu also manufactures chassis cabs for medium, heavy and extra-heavy commercial vehicles at their plant in Gqeberha) is also doing well.

“We’re seeing some of the bigger municipalities replacing their fleet, so we’re happy but not complacent.
