Jaguar updates XJ range ... and adds hotter XJR575

Jaguar has made a few changes to its XJ sedan range, including the introduction of an XJR575 performance flagship.

The updated XJ is due to go on sale in South Africa late in 2017.

So, to the most exciting news first. The new XJR575 employs the automaker’s familiar 5,0-litre supercharged V8, but tuned to deliver 423 kW and 700 N.m. The result is a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4,4 seconds and a top speed of 300 km/h.

The XJR575 will be available in standard wheelbase length only, with the choice of two bespoke exterior colour finishes (Velocity Blue and Satin Corris Grey).

Setting the performance model apart from the standard models are a number of exterior details, including a subtle rear spoiler, side-sills, a model-specific front bumper and aggressive lower air intakes featuring gloss black surrounds, as well as twin bonnet louvres and 20-inch gloss-black wheels (with red-painted brake callipers). Inside, you’ll find embossed tread plates and diamond-quilted upholstery.

The rest of the range benefits from a few styling tweaks as well as a handful of technology upgrades that Jaguar says “enhances connectivity” thanks to 4G Wi-Fi capability. In addition, the central console now features a larger, 10-inch touchscreen. Fresh safety technologies have also been added, with the likes of forward traffic detection and lane keep assist now available.

The revised range will feature Luxury, Premium Luxury, Portfolio, R-Sport, Autobiography and the aforementioned XJR575 trim levels, while engine options will include the 221 kW 3,0-litre V6 diesel, the 250 kW 3,0-litre V6 supercharged petrol, the 375 kW 5,0-litre V8 supercharged petrol and the 423 kW unit mentioned above.

Hot Jaguar XJR575 revealed as brand's most powerful production saloon yet

Jaguar’s flagship saloon receives extensive revisions and a 567bhp range-topper

Jaguar has unveiled the XJR575, the most powerful version yet of its flagship saloon, in a bid to keep pace with rivals such as the Mercedes-AMG S63 and Audi S8.

First seen in camouflaged guise going up the hill at last month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, the XJR575 uses the F-Type SVR’s 5.0-litre V8 supercharged engine with 567bhp, 25bhp more than the outgoing XJR, and 516lb ft.

That enables a 0-62mph time of 4.4sec, 0.2sec faster than its predecessor but 0.2sec slower than the S63. Its top speed is 186mph.

The hot saloon is part of the updates across the XJ range that come as a mid-life refresh, ahead of a new XJ in 2019. That model is widely rumoured to be pure electric. If true, Jaguar would beat its rivals to having a battery-powered flagship saloon and target core markets such as China.

In the meantime, this new XJR575, available in standard wheelbase only, has tailor-made exterior details, including a rear spoiler, side sills, front bumper and lower air intakes with gloss black surrounds. XJR575 badging and twin bonnet louvres plus 20in gloss black wheels with red brake calipers distinguish the car from its standard XJ siblings. Inside, the model has embossed tread plates, 575 branding and diamond quilted seating in two colour options.

Across the broader range, the XJ gets full LED headlights and so-called ‘J-blade signature’ daytime running lights as well as technology updates to bring the saloon in line with the broader Jaguar range. These include the latest Touch Pro infotainment system using a 10.0in central touchscreen and 4G wi-fi connectivity. New safety systems include Lane Keep Assist, Driver Condition Monitor and Autonomous Emergency Braking.

On sale in November, the revised XJ will start from £59,995, a rise of just over £1000 on the current model. The XJR575 will cost £93,170, £500 more than its predecessor.

Jaguar XJ sedan facelift: we have local pricing!

Local pricing for the facelifted Jaguar XJ range has been released, with the new flagship XJR575 included in the line-up.

The largest and oldest saloon in Jaguar’s range is the XJ sedan. But the British automaker recently updated this model, while also adding the new XJR575 flagship derivative, which features a 423 kW supercharged 5,0-litre V8.

And now local pricing for the updated range has been released. The line-up starts from R1 507 000 and runs through to R2 546 600 for the 300 km/h XJR575. Of course, the XJ isn’t exactly a big seller for Jaguar in South Africa, rarely exceeding five units a month.

The updated range features the familiar 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel and supercharged petrol engines as well as the aforementioned supercharged 5,0-litre V8.

Interestingly, the 2,0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged unit appears to have been dropped from the local line-up.

I'm always amazed at how much high end cars cost. The cheapest of those is worth more than my flat.

Jaguar XJR 575 SWB 2017 review

Should I buy one?

All of which leaves the XJR where, exactly? A bit old-fashioned and a bit old-school? Perhaps. Is it as tech-laden as an S-Class or the latest A8? Is it heck. Is it as crushingly capable as a Porsche Panamera? Could it wrestle a live rhino to the ground like a BMW 760Li? I shouldn’t imagine so for a second. For all of these reasons and more, I couldn’t bring myself to give the XJ any more than four stars. But I also don’t think it matters that much, which is why I’d recommend one in a second.

Jaguar XJR 575 2017 UK review

Should I buy one?

If the XJR was already on your radar, the 575 only enrichens the proposition. For just £1055 more than before, it’s quicker – without affecting fuel economy or emissions, says Jaguar – and, like the rest of the revised XJ range, benefits from an improved infotainment system with a larger, 10in touchscreen featuring pinch and zoom, 4G wi-fi for up to eight devices and new driver aids including lane departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, forward detection warning and fatigue sensing.

The closest S-Class, 7 Series and Porsche Panamera are cleaner, cheaper, newer and more technologically advanced, but the XJR 575’s charismatic powertrain and combination of handling, fluidity and comfort still make it a justifiable choice in this rarefied segment.

Jaguar XJ50

Jaguar is marking 50 years of its flagship XJ luxury saloon - the choice of business leaders, celebrities, politicians and royalty for five decades - with the launch of a new special edition model. Revealed at the Beijing Motor Show, the Jaguar XJ50 celebrates half a century of trademark performance, technology and luxury.

Available in both standard and long wheelbase with a 3.0-litre diesel (300PS) powertrain, the exterior updates for the Jaguar XJ50 include Autobiography-style front and rear bumpers. These mark the anniversary edition out alongside purposeful new 20-inch Venom wheels, a black front grille and unique badging to the rear and side vents, while the striking colour palette includes Fuji White, Santorini Black, Loire Blue and Rosello Red.

Inside, the luxurious cabin features soft-grain diamond-quilted seats with an embossed leaper on the headrests and an XJ50 logo on the centre armrest. Unique intaglio branding and XJ50-badged illuminated treadplates also differentiate the anniversary edition, alongside anodised gearshift paddles and bright metal pedals.

"Spanning half a century, the Jaguar XJ remains true to its heritage with a wonderful balance of beautiful design, intelligent performance and indulgent luxury that ensures it stands out from the crowd.
