The Kia Stinger Thread

Kia priming rakish replacement for Stinger saloon

Sleek saloon pictured for the first time as the brand looks to its next wave of EVs

Kia is readying a streamlined electric saloon that could replace the previous Stinger.

Preview images posted to social media reveal it to be a long-wheelbase four-door with a cab-forward design. Although it shares many styling cues with Kia’s existing EVs, it is notably curvier than those models, with a bubble-like roof.

The interior can be seen only through the exterior glasshouse, but it appears to use a steering yoke rather than a traditional wheel, hinting that the brand could use the concept to preview steer-by-wire technology.

It also lacks traditional door mirrors, instead using cameras mounted on the rear faces of the daytime-running lights.

Kia has yet to confirm when it will reveal the model in full or name it.

Brand president Ho-sung Song previously told Autocar that an EV similarly positioned to the Stinger GT was under consideration to boost the public’s perception of Kia.

“That kind of model is under study,” he said. “What kind of model can help build the brand? This is what we are now studying.”

Such a car could be expected to be named EV7 or EV8, positioning it between the EV6 crossover and the EV9 SUV.

Kia teases stunning Stinger successor

Back in the day, the Kia Stinger was arguably the only model in the automaker's lineup that truly captured the fun of a sporty European sedan, complete with engaging, rear-wheel-drive handling. When Kia ended its production in 2023, it left a big gap. Back then, the company promised an electric version would eventually fill that hole, bringing the excitement of high-performance driving back to the brand.

A dramatic teaser video has just arrived, revealing what appears to be the Stinger's successor - a radical electric fastback that hopes to redefine what a performance EV can be. This shadowy preview reveals a vehicle that looks aggressive and ready for the track. The car's identity is still officially a secret, but the sporty proportions and design language strongly suggest this is the replacement fans have been waiting for.

Unlike many new electric cars, which often take the form of tall crossovers, this new model maintains a low-slung, sweeping fastback profile. Its roofline is sleek, though maybe a bit taller than the original Stinger, resembling the fashionable coupe-like SUVs seen today.

The most shocking design element is how wide the vehicle appears. The flanks bulge out significantly, giving it the imposing look of a car fitted with a widebody kit. It brings to mind the bold, aggressive aesthetics of rally or racing cars that have custom, bolt-on fender flares blended smoothly into the bodywork. The video highlights how far these fenders jut out, creating a truly broad and stable stance that hints at serious grip and performance potential.

Kia will build wild Stinger successor - but is waiting for costs to drop

"Sports saloon for the gamer generation" is planned for production, and it could spawn an estate

Kia will put the Vision Meta Turismo concept into production as a new flagship model in the vein of the V6-powered Stinger GT S - but only once the price is viable, the brand's design chief has told Autocar.

The striking GT concept was revealed in Korea last year to mark Kia's 80th birthday. It sits on a new platform and showcases a bold new era of design for Kia called Opposites United: Evolution.

The current design language, Opposites United, started with the EV6 in 2021 and defined every model up until the EV2, unveiled last month.

Asked what was stopping Kia from putting the electric four-door super-GT into production today, design chief Karim Habib told Autocar: "At this point, it is more strategic. It's a pure EV and the price of doing a high-performance EV is what is slowing us down. Hopefully, the upward movement of EVs keeps going. I think there will be more openness to this [type of] car. At least that's what we're betting on."

He added: "We have a small history of doing cars like the Stinger and that's something we don't want to give up on. The Meta Turismo is our idea of a sports sedan for the gamer generation. A few years ago, we started thinking about what could we do beyond SUVs? We do produce and sell a lot of SUVs, which is good, but we also believe that there's more than that."
