I am starting this thread to inform everyone about vehicle recall campaigns - whether local or global - as there seems to be a growing trend for manufacturers to have to recall vehicles for inherent or manufacturing faults or defects, which may affect the safety equipment, running gear, engines or drive-trains, requiring a visit to your nearest dealer workshop to have them attended to & rectified ASAP.

Volvo Cars recalls 507,000 vehicles as probe finds fire risk - IOL

620x349

Swedish auto-maker Volvo Cars is recalling 507,000 vehicles worldwide because of a faulty engine component that, in extreme cases, could result in a fire.

The company, which is owned by China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., said its own “investigations have identified that in very rare cases the plastic engine intake manifold may melt and deform.”

“In the very worst case, there is a possibility that a localized engine bay fire may occur,” it said.

When asked to provide details of the potential financial impact, Stefan Elfstrom, a spokesman for Volvo Cars, said, “We don’t comment on the cost.” The company is keen to fix the faulty vehicles as fast as possible and customers won’t incur any costs related to addressing the error, he said.

The cars being recalled were produced in 2014-2019 and have a 2-liter, 4-cylinder diesel engine, Volvo Cars said in an emailed statement.

The affected models are the S60, S80, S90, V40, V60, V70, V90, XC60 and XC90.

While the company has no reports of accidents or personal injuries, all customers will receive a letter asking them to contact their local retailer for corrective action.

Good. Let's get the ball rolling:

Volvo SA to recall diesel cars over engine fire risk

Volvo Cars South Africa has confirmed that 2896 local diesel-powered cars built between 2014 and 2019 are affected by the global recall announced by its Swedish parent company over the weekend.

Volvo is recalling 507 353 cars around the world because of a plastic inlet manifold in the engine that could melt due to temperature changes and potentially cause an engine fire.

International spokesperson Stefan Elfstrom told Swedish news agency TT that the fault had led to a few car fire cases, but that to date there had been no reports of accidents or injuries, AP reported on Monday.

The company also urged drivers to watch out for danger signs, such as an engine management light illuminating, or the engine cutting out or suddenly losing power.

Which cars are affected in South Africa?

According to Volvo SA, the recall affects certain four-cylinder diesel models built between 2014 and 2019 and within the following ranges: V40, V40 Cross Country, XC60, S90 and XC90.

“Volvo Cars is working on a fix for this issue and aims to start rolling it out as soon as it’s available,” Volvo Cars South Africa said in a statement.

“For now customers are being made aware of this potential issue so they are able to react.

“This is a preventative recall to avert any possible future problems,” it added. “Volvo never compromises on safety and is performing this recall voluntarily.”

Customers with queries have been urged to contact the company’s call centre on: 0800 698 6586.

The Latest Car To Get Recalled Over Unintended Acceleration Is, Uh, The Barbie Dream Camper

tnoeha5oqkm4iwwvakaq.png

It’s every child’s dream-turned-nightmare: Their little ride-on car has come to life, leaving the driver nothing but a mere spectator as they’re launched into a hellride.

And now, this Christine-meets-Toyota horrorshow is real: Dream Campers are still running haywire even after the pedal is released, causing a recall of 44,000 plastic vans.

Parents with this specific Barbie Dream Camper in their homes have been instructed to “immediately take the recalled Power Wheels away from children, stop using them and contact Fisher-Price for a free repair,” according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

It further reports on the specifics of the model in question:

This recall involves children’s Power Wheels Barbie Dream Campers with model number FRC29 with a grey foot pedal. The recalled ride-on vehicles are hot pink with blue accents and have the Barbie logo printed on the back. They are battery-operated and have a play kitchen, a fold out grill and pretend campfire. The model number is printed on a label under the hood.
These Power Wheels Barbie Dream Campers were sold specifically at Walmart from July 2018 through January 2019—aka, prime shopping season for summer birthdays and winter holidays.

The 44,000 vehicles are being recalled due to risk of injury, not to mention the mental trauma that’s gotta result from a car deciding you’re its bitch at such a young age.

Thankfully, the problem seems to be a relatively easy fix if the CPSC is asking for their recall and subsequent repair, not just a flat-out recall altogether.

If you have one of the demon campers, you can follow Mattel’s recall instructions here.

No injuries have been reported, but the CPSC has received seventeen reports of Barbie Campers run amok, so be on the lookout for any runaway Barbie vans terrorizing your neighborhood.

You never know if you could be next.

Mazda recalls nearly 2,500 MX-5 Miatas for a part that might fall off

Even if it might not be a piece of great importance, having a part fall off your vehicle can spell trouble for your car and the cars around you. That's the reason behind Mazda's latest recall.

Mazda announced this week that it will recall 2,476 examples of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. The affected vehicles carry build dates between May 26 and July 6, 2015.

That covers VINs between JM1NDAD79G0100681 and JM1NDAD7XG0103315, in case you have that memorized for some reason.

The problem comes from a metal bracket and its associated skid plate. Thanks to a welding machine that was improperly maintained, that bracket might have a weld that's subject to degradation over time. If the weld gets weak enough, the bracket and/or skid plate might fall off the vehicle.

Mazda notes that before the part detaches, owners might hear a metallic rattle.

Not only does this create an object that the driver might run over, puncturing a tire in the process, it becomes a road hazard for everyone else.

Thankfully, Mazda has not received any reports of injuries or crashes related to the defect.

To remedy the issue, Mazda technicians will replace the skid plate with a part that is guaranteed to be welded correctly.

The process was improved during production, Mazda says, so vehicles falling outside the build date range mentioned above will already have the superior component.

Mazda expects to notify affected owners in late August.

Over 90,000 Nissan Titans Recalled for Engines That Might Stall - Jalopnik

qsaqbu6npr5ps7mzsasb.jpg

Picture this: You’re outside, messing around in the dry, desert dirt with your Nissan Titan when suddenly the interior lights start to flicker. The radio starts to come in intermittently.

No, you aren’t about to be paid a visit from the Demogorgon in Stranger Things, but your truck might be in need of a recall repair.

Recently, Nissan issued a recall for model year 2017 to 2019 Titans (the light-duty, gasoline-driven ones) over a potential alternator harness issue, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall notice. It estimates 91,319 Titans are may be involved.

The defect is described thusly:

On certain Model Year 2017-2019 Nissan Titan vehicles, the alternator harness may have been damaged during the engine installation process. When the engine is lowered into place, the harness may contact the square edge of a metal frame bracket, causing the harness to pull away from its normal routing.

If this occurs, the harness may become trapped against the bracket and the contact may breach its shield. Sustained contact may damages the wires and cause an electrical short to occur.

An electrical short may cause the vehicle to experience abnormal electrical activity (i.e. interior lights flickering, intermittent radio). This condition may prevent the battery from charging, and over time, lead the battery to discharge.

Once the battery’s voltage lowers, the car could start operating at reduced power. The engine might stall during driving. And in very rare cases, the short could result in a fire in the engine compartment.

If you’ve noticed weird electrical activity in your truck, then it might be defective. When you bring it into the dealer to have it fixed, mechanics there will check the alternator harness for the correct routing and any existing damage. Then, they’ll either clip the harness into where it’s supposed to go or replace it altogether.

After that, you can be back on your merry way.

RECALLS
Nearly 30,000 Volkswagen Tiguans and CCs Recalled for Faulty Airbag Modules - Jalopnik

Owners of model-year 2015 to 2016 Volkswagen Tiguans and CCs should be aware that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall for their cars over an airbag issue.

If you’re reading this and you own a CC, then I commend you because I feel like almost nobody bought that car. Just get it checked out, please.

xbab0dasbnb4fyolkfrf.jpg

The agency estimates 27,822 cars are potentially involved in the recall, which is detailed as a flawed capacitor in the airbag control module that could cause the airbags in the car to either deactivate or unexpectedly deploy.

It also affects the seat belt pre-tensioners, all bad things to have go wrong in the event of a crash, according to the recall notice.

There are an estimated 25,239 Tiguans and 2,583 CCs affected. The defective capacitor was supplied by ZF/TRW and, as Autoblog notes, this recall isn’t related to the Takata airbag recall.

Drivers are advised to keep an eye out for the airbag warning light; if that comes on, it can generally mean the car has the faulty part.

The repair doesn’t sound too complicated. The cars will undergo an inspection to see if the control module needs necessary replacing.

On a completely unrelated note, I saw a Volkswagen CC driving toward me on the highway over the weekend. It’s a handsome car! I like it and I wish more people bought them.

Man, I only clicked on this thread because of that CC pic. I had a CC looking exactly like that and boy do I miss it. It was so beautiful and still looks nicer than the Arteon . Well if I still had it, it would have been part of be recall ..

Volkswagen USA Recalls 679,000 Cars for Electrical Defects That Could Lead to Rollaways - Car and Driver

The problem affects many late-model VW Beetle, GTI, Golf, and Jetta models with real ignition keys.

Volkswagen is expanding a recall from 2018 to prevent drivers from removing the ignition key if their vehicles are not in park, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The problem is electrical, a kind of issue that has plagued VW in the past, and relates to a defective switch contact in the gear selector housing.

A silicate layer can form on the contact; and, because of higher resistance, prevent the switch from detecting whether the gear selector is in park. When that happens, the car might throw a warning message, issue a chime sound, or do nothing at all.

A total of 679,027 cars are affected in the U.S, including the 2011–2018 Jetta, 2012–2019 Beetle, 2015–2019 GTI, 2015–2016 and 2018–2019 Golf, and 2017–2019 Golf SportWagen.

However, only these models with automatic transmission, a manual-crank hand brake, and a flip-out metal ignition key—remember, the ones you used to stick in the steering column?—have the problem, VW said.

The company previously recalled 33,168 Golf and Golf SportWagen models in July 2018 and, through further testing, realised the problem extended to hundreds of thousands of extra cars.

At this time, the company did not cite any injuries or accidents related to this defect.

As with that recall, the solution is rather extensive. Dealers have to install a new switch inside the gearshift lever housing, disable the old switch without removing it, and connect a circuit board to the wiring harness that wasn't originally equipped on these cars.

The board is supposed to limit the "current spikes" that were causing the problem, VW said.

The company has made fixes to all current models in production and said it will begin notifying owners in mid-October.

Toyota recalls 191,000 cars with defective airbags. What drivers need to know - FOX Business

Auto-manufacturing giant Toyota announced it’s recalling 191,000 cars in the United States and Japan to fix defective Takata-brand airbags that may not work properly in a crash.

A Toyota Motor North America representative told FOX Business that certain 2003 to 2008 Corolla models, and 2005 to 2008 Matrix models, were affected by the flaw.

“The involved vehicles are equipped with a front passenger airbag assembly containing an inflator ... installed as a replacement under a prior recall,” the spokesperson said.

“There is a possibility that the airbag may not unfold as designed under high-temperature conditions, resulting in airbag internal pressure rising differently than expected.”

In a separate statement, Toyota explained that if one of the affected airbags deploys, “there is a possibility that it could be damaged.” And “such damage could cause the airbag to not properly inflate, and this could increase the risk of occupant injury in the event of a crash."

The recall includes a whopping 135,000 vehicles in the United States.

Toyota didn’t say if the airbags in question were tied to any injuries, but this isn’t the first time Takata has been involved with airbag defects: In 2018, an Arizona man was killed by an exploding Takata airbag inflator, bringing the death toll for Takata to at least 24.

Automakers have been gradually replacing Takata airbags for years in response.

Toyota said it will contact affected Corolla and Matrix owners through first-class mail, and offer to replace the airbags at no cost.

To see if a vehicle needs repair, the spokesperson said, drivers can visit Toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter their vehicle identification number or license plate information.

I remember reading somewhere that Continental warned GM when they said they found cheaper airbags elsewhere. They even got a few Takata units and conducted test on it and found that this would happen. But the manufacturers did not listen.

Maybe Gavin Watson was a takata test pilot in his spare time.

Seems you may be right about that 'conspiracy theory' after all.....

Toyota Is Recalling Corolla and Matrix Cars to Replace Airbags Again

This one is to replace airbags that were previously repaired

CR-Cars-InlineHero-2006-Toyota-Matrix-f-driving-8-19

Toyota announced that it will recall certain 2003-2008 Corolla and 2005-2008 Matrix cars in the U.S. to replace the front passenger airbag.

There is concern the airbag could be damaged on deployment, preventing it from properly inflating and protecting the occupant, leading to an increased risk of injury in a crash.

The Takata airbags were involved in a previous recall because they could potentially send metal shards into occupants when deployed. Toyota says that this is a “new and different issue.” (Learn more about Toyota’s Takata recalls.)

There are 135,000 cars involved in this latest action. Owners will be notified in October by mail to take their vehicles to a local Toyota dealership for a free repair.

Ford recalls 550,000 trucks and SUVs, including F-150, Expedition, and Explorer

Ford has issued a recall for more than 550,000 SUVs and trucks, including the F-150, Explorer, and Expedition, because the seat-backs in the vehicles might not properly restrain people if the if there’s a crash.

The recall affects 10 different Ford models, specifically:
  • 2018-20 Ford F-150
  • 2019-20 Ford F-series Super Duty
  • 2018-19 Ford Explorer
  • 2019-20 Ford Expedition with a manual driver and/or front passenger seat-back recliner mechanism
  • 2020 Ford Explorer
  • 2020 Lincoln Aviator
While Ford says that it doesn’t know of any injuries caused because of the issue, the concern is that the trucks might not have a third pawl for seat strength, due to an improperly-assembled recliner mechanism.

The company said a faulty mechanism might not properly restrain an occupant in a crash, which increases the risk of injury when operating the vehicle.

The issue impacts 483,325 vehicles in the United States and federal territories, 58,712 in Canada, and 8,149 in Mexico, the company said.

GM issues recall on 3.8M vehicles that may not stop - slashgear.com

2018-gmc-sierra-1280x720.jpg

GM has issued a recall on several of its popular trucks and SUV's due to a potential braking issue that could lead to an accident.

The recall was issued on 2014-2018 model year vehicles that include some Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Silverado, Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, GMC Sierra, and GMC Yukon vehicles.

GM recalled 310,000 vehicles in Canada for the same issue in June; it’s not clear why it took so long to recall the vehicles in the States.

The recall has to do with the amount of vacuum that is created by the vacuum pump. GM says that the vacuum created can decrease over time. If the vacuum pressure decreases, the brakes may not function as intended.

The NHTSA opened an investigation into the issue last November and said it had reports of nine related crashes and two injuries. GM opened the investigation after the NHTSA provided it with additional field reports.

GM says that the issue would impact braking in “rare circumstances.” GM says that the fix will have dealers reprogramming the electronic brake control module to improve how the system uses hydraulic brake boost assist when vacuum assist is depleted. The vacuum pump that is the source of the issue is lubricated with engine oil.

GM says that over time, oil that flows into the pump through a filter screen can build debris and sludge on the screen and cause the vacuum pump to lose effectiveness.

GM says that model years before 2014 used a different brake assist system design and that models made after 2018 were not equipped with a pump design that is affected.

GM has also issued a separate recall for 177,000 2018 Malibu cars with the 1.5L turbo engine because an error in the engine control module software could cause the fuel injectors to be disabled.

The automaker has also recalled 91,000 Chevy Express, and GMC Savana vans due to a seat belt unfastened warning light that may not work as intended.

Stop Sale Issued For Certain 2020 Jeep Gladiators Over Potential For Rear Driveshafts To Fracture - Jalopnik

nfli5d7t9xs5dzefueoj.jpg

Cool new pickup truck you’ve got there, pal! What is that, like, a Jeep Wrangler with a truck bed or something? A “Gladiator,” you say? They make those now?

Wow, what a world we live in. Too bad it’s already being recalled.

Fiat Chrysler filed documents with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration dated Tuesday, recalling 3,427 Gladiators over the potential for their rear driveshaft to fracture.

The Gladiator debuted in late 2018 as a Jeep Wrangler-style pickup for the 2020 model year, and as of June, FCA reported having sold 7,252 Gladiators in the U.S. thus far.

The recall, documents posted by NHTSA said, is for Gladiators built between Dec. 15, 2018 and June 25 of this year.

The estimated number of the nearly 3,500 Gladiators with a defect is only 5 percent, but likely because of the nature of the recall, a stop sale was issued on affected Gladiators until a fix is complete.

Trucks involved in the recall could experience a driveshaft fracture, courtesy of some grease left off during assembly.

VW, Porsche to recall around 227,000 cars over airbag, seatbelt issues: report

Volkswagen and Porsche have to recall around 227,000 cars due to problems with airbags and seat belt pre-tensioners, Germany’s Stuttgarter Zeitung said on Thursday.

The newspaper said the Tiguan, Sharan and CC models built in 2015 as well as Porsche 911, Boxter, Cayman and Panamera models from 2015 and 2016.

It cited Germany’s KBA federal motor authority as saying the cars needed an update to the software of the airbag control units.

Volkswagen said 227,000 VW and Porsche cars were affected, citing possible problems with airbags in some of them and adding that new software needed to be installed.

A spokesman for Porsche said around 23,500 Porsche models could be affected by airbags or seat belt pre-tensioners triggering even if the vehicle was not involved in an accident.

It said the models affected were built in 2015 and 2016 and added that of the vehicles affected, around 3,900 were in Germany.

Nearly 3,000 Recalled Brand New BMWs And Minis Have Just Been Sitting In An Auction Yard For Over Four Years - Jalopnik

715771

If, by chance, you may have wandered over to the ADESA salvage yard in Vancouver, British Columbia anytime over the last four years, you would have discovered a field of nearly 3,000 seemingly brand-new BMW and Mini models parked bumper to bumper, just rotting away.

A reader who sent Jalopnik photos of the cars in the salvage yard has done exactly that a few times over the last couple of years, and every time the cars appear a little sadder.

Back in February of 2015, a rough winter storm rocked Halifax port just as a fresh shipment of 2014 and 2015 model year BMW and Mini cars had arrived, as reported at the time by CBC.

Due to the extensive “exposure to standing water and salt for an extended period,” Transport Canada—the transportation regulatory department of the Canadian government—issued a recall for the 2,966 vehicles in port affected by the storm back in 2015.

The cars have been sitting at ADESA Vancouver, a salvage auction yard, ever since. According to the official recall, the Mini models were determined to be at increased risk of crash due to “corrosion at the starter motor power supply cable connectors, which could lead to the inability to restart the engine following an engine shutdown by the start-stop (MSA) system.”

The same recall determined the BMW models were at increased risk of crash because “lubrication of some internal components within the steering rack may have been exposed to excessive water or salt which could result in higher than normal steering effort or steering binding.”

The recall also warned of damage to electrical wires and connectors in the cars.

The list of models affected included the BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, i3 electric hatch, i8 electric coupe, X1 crossover, Z4 roadster, Mini Cooper, Cooper Convertible, Coupe, Mini Paceman, and Mini Roadster.

This week, BMW of Canada sent Jalopnik the following statement in response to the situation:

While we cannot confirm without seeing individual VINs, it appears that the vehicles pictured may be among those involved in the Port of Halifax recall.

This recall was implemented in conjunction with Transport Canada. It was issued due to risks relating to the exposure of certain vehicles to excessive standing water or salt for an extended period of time at the port of entry in Halifax in 2015.

It was deemed that this exposure could result in a number of issues including, for example, damage to electrical systems.

All vehicles subject to the recall were removed from service. BMW and MINI retailers worked with affected customers to replace their vehicle with a new vehicle as quickly as possible.

715773

The photos Luke sent to Jalopnik show some M models, including an M4 and a few M6s. That’s a lot of good car just sitting there going to waste.

Why hasn’t somebody started a spec salvage racing series with these yet? Can we try?

NHTSA Investigating 2018–2019 Jeep Wrangler over Frame, Steering Complaints - Car and Driver

715931

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened investigations into frame welds and steering problems in about 270,000 2018–2019 Jeep Wrangler SUV's.

A complaint by the owner of a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL prompted NHTSA to investigate weld issues, which the agency then expanded to include more than 3,000 owner complaints of wobbling or "shimmy" in the steering.

The investigation, which is not a recall, doesn't include 2020 Wranglers, and no accidents or injuries have been reported.
