The local WhatsApp competitor that doesn't use data

“At our current growth rate, we have no doubt that we will hit our target of 25 million active users by 2023.”

Maybe slightly over confident there

This app is MTN to MTN ye?
Hardly a WhatsApp competitor, yet.

It bothers me to a great extent that data is so unaffordable that an instant messaging app with zero rating of data is a feasible solution.

Why are people not just using Element on the Matric-protocol Matrix protocol?
Free and open-source.
You can even roll your own server if you're so inclined.

Bothered reading the article?
What sets Moya apart from its competitors is that it doesn’t consume your mobile data but relies on reverse-billing agreements with MTN, Vodacom, Telkom, and Cell C.

Not to nitpick but the title is misleading. It does use data, you are just not paying for it in the traditional sense. For techies reading articles, it matters :)
Not to nitpick but...data is a fictional product. You are actually paying for access every time you buy data for anything.

Anyways, nothing wrong with title. It doesn't use (your) data, just like whatsapp, google, facebook is free but still paid for by other means.

...and who pays the reverse charge bill, which literally is the main selling point here.

I don't particularly care about the reverse-charge feature of this new app. Data is plenty cheap, for me at least. Now that's not to say that MNOs aren't shafting South Africans with their data costs.
My point is addressing people who want a secure open-source messaging app and protocol that allows you to run your own server meaning you are in complete control of your data.

Wonder what happened to the last local WhatsApp competitor we had...

Then you shouldn't comment in a thread that is about exactly that.

Then perhaps maybe you should find a thread with that discussion and not polluting others with irrelevant advice.

just saying...
