The local WhatsApp competitor that doesn't use data

Because why pay if you can get it free. Imagine if you could get free petrol, would you still go pay for it?
South Africans are super cheapskates, we'll do anything to save a few cents. This really struck home with me a couple of years ago when McD had a campaign selling Big Mac meals for R21 for a day. People queued for hours to save R20.

Then you shouldn't comment in a thread that is about exactly that.

Then perhaps maybe you should find a thread with that discussion and not polluting others with irrelevant advice.

just saying...
lmao I should comment wherever I want.
This is a thread about a messaging app, so I gave an alternative.

iOS users rarely find themselves without airtime or data so not a huge target market. ;)
If that’s their thinking then they obviously losing out.
The SP customer centric apps are zero rated on iOS.
Even if it were not free allow us access at least.

Data is not unaffordable.
That clearly is relative to how much a particular person can afford. Many people in SA are so poor that putting aside even R10 a week for data is literally unaffordable.

I do love the idea of this, especially for the really poor who cannot keep buying data, but a pity it does not cover iOS as it is not then universal, and of course this "market research service, which the company says is being used by the major market research companies in South Africa" does raise some flags in terms of what sort of metadata goes to third parties.

maybe mybb should go through this app's tos (teehee!) and explain in non-legal english what they're doing with all the user data they've so graciously agreed to pay for.
