Andy Wray has a wife he adores and a three-year-old daughter he dotes on. But if he is parted from them for 48 hours or more, he can no longer recognise them.

This is because Mr Wray, a 32-year-old former policeman, has a condition which effectively wipes his memory clean every two days.

He can't recall his wedding day, the day his daughter was born or even who his parents are. Doctors say it is the result of trauma he suffered during his time in the force.

Two years after leaving the police, he had a breakdown when bottled-up memories of car crashes and suicides came back to haunt him. He found himself in hospital, with no memory of his wife Jo, his baby daughter Chloe --or any other aspect of his life.

Now he can recognise Jo, 34, and Chloe but knows that even a brief parting could render them strangers again.

He said: ‘I have a two-day memory. As long as people stay with me I am aware of who they are. But I can't remember any of my past.

‘If Jo left me for longer than two days, I would walk past her in the street without knowing her.’

Hectic.

There's things I'd like to just forget and never remember again, but to have a 48hr memory as a permanent fixture in my life would be terrible.

I wonder if it's all psychological or if it's physical (like Drew Barrymoore)

Seeing as though he can't remember anything happening 2 days ago I'm pretty sure he must have a pretty happy-go-lucky attitude...

All I can say is... sex with a complete stranger every few days is what some guys only dream about. :o

I'll be like dude you borrowed R560 from me 3 days ago...........
