The Mars One project has been declared bankrupt

We would have a better chance on Mars than a planet with existing life. If there is life it would include bacteria and micro organisms that we have no immunity too.
Well we don't have immunity for most of the bacteria on earth and we're doing just fine. Chances of coming into contact with a pathogen like smallpox that specifically target us are pretty slim.

I think you misunderstand.

It was only not feasible because they had no plan for funding, their plan was to find some people and then generate a large amount of publicity and then find away to turn that publicity into money.

Its definitely possible to get to Mars with the right funding. Elon will do this, firstly because he will get the funding but also because he has proven again and again that his ideas work.
They had no plan period. Nothing on paper to get there or how to survive. Personally for me it's not getting there that's the problem but rather the turnaround times. Taking months to get to your destination isn't really ideal. There's just too much that can happen and it will take years to deal with any issues.

Partly why I don't take space travel seriously anymore

saw a program a while ago. for many years now russia has been putting people in confined community hubs to study the mental and social effects of long distance space travel. was pretty interesting, it was clearly not something anyone could do, some flipped out after a few months.

There are Russians who have been on the ISS for years. The concept was entirely plausible they were just unconvincing. Looks like they assumed that at some point the money and tech would just be handed to them.

The ISS is a few hours away. Can't really compare to interplanetary travel.

well, there have been some studies on deep sleep/stasis methods too, like what they do in hospitals. longest one was 2 weeks i think.

O well it was fun while it lasted. We need these kind of dreamers to progress. It it was up to most people in this thread we would still be living in trees to afraid to climb down

No we also need realists. Current space tech isn't up to it. We need new and better. Unfortunately there's no longer a drive like there was after WW2.

We need half serious, intelligent people to dream big and try and invent the tech and formulate a plan. Even if it fails the next guy can now built on top of that failure.

Without that there is no drive. If everyone just sits around waiting for the tech to be developed we will never get there

The moment I saw them signing up volunteers without a contingency of marines I knew it was fake

For a Theoretical Physicist, she should have known this to be an impossibility at this time.
Can't blame her. Not much excitement in TP so looking to get her rocks off I suppose.

Forget Mars. Colonise North Africa and build a massive human settlement there. Plus labour will be cheap.

Oh wait.........

8 months to get there you say.
