All-new 2nd Gen CX-5.

"Developers of the all-new Mazda CX-5 aimed to take the emotional appeal and powerful vitality the carmaker has pursued with its KODO - Soul of Motion designs to a yet higher level by creating a fresh expression of beauty that appeals to mature sensibilities. Aiming for a unique design only Mazda could produce, the development team started with a simple yet honed form free of non-essential elements, as is common in traditional Japanese crafts, choosing "refined toughness" as the design keyword."

SkyActiv engines are not old and quite well regarded.

Anyway back to topic, very nice looking SUV.

Last month, Mazda released a teaser image of the new CX-5. And now the second-generation version of the compact SUV has been fully revealed, ahead of its debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The Japanese automaker bills it as a “completely redesigned” model, claiming to have “refined virtually every aspect of the all-new CX-5”.

Mazda says the new CX-5 was engineered to deliver “responsive performance” for the driver, while also “prioritising passenger comfort for a pleasant ride in a remarkably quiet and finely crafted cabin”.

The second-gen model will be available with two petrol engines – a 2,0- and 2,5-litre – and a 2,2-litre diesel. No word yet on whether the outputs of these mills have changed.

The new model now also features the brand’s “G-Vectoring Control” system, which is already available in the Mazda3. Additional highlights include a head-up display and a remote power tailgate.

The new Mazda CX-5 is scheduled to go on sale in February in Japan, before rolling out to other markets around the world. Expect more information to be available after the model’s debut in Los Angeles.

I suppose this is directed at me.
They are trying something different to get higher output and efficiency out of a motor while maintaining the reliability of NA. Not everything without a turbo belongs in the past.

Mazda to launch electrified cars from 2021

Mazda R&D boss says emissions regulations make electrification inevitable but pledges to keep developing petrol and diesel technology

Mazda will launch its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in around five years' time.

Until now Mazda has been a staunch advocate of continuing to develop regular internal combustion engine technology and give its cars the 'right-sized' engines, which are often larger in capacity than rival units with downsized turbochargers but which return better real-world fuel economy.

To that end, it has not pushed ahead with development of plug-in technology, but Mazda R&D chief Kiyoshi Fujiwara has confirmed the firm will launch a plug-in hybrid "in or after 2021".

The reason, he said, was "severe, severe, tougher CO2 regulations".

He also confirmed mild hybrid Mazdas with 48V sub systems were also in development to further improve fuel economy.

All-electric Mazdas should also arrive, according to Fujiwara, but the development of these was trickier due to the complex power control electronic management systems needed. "We don't want to be a Galaxy Note 7," joked Fujiwara, in reference to the problems Samsung is having with the battery management of its now-discontinued smartphone that caused many to catch fire.

Development of petrol and diesel technology will still continue at Mazda, Fujiwara said, and there are still improvements to be made with both. The biggest improvements will come with the adoption of homogeneous compression in 2018/19, he added.

Lightweight technology is also in development at Mazda, including carbonfibre and carbonfibre-reinforced plastics, but cost could be prohibitive to them making an immediate introduction on their most obvious candidate, the MX-5.

The overall target for all these technologies will be a 50% improvement in fuel efficiency by 2020. That date has been earmarked for the introduction of its next generation of models and its Skyactiv 2 technology.

Mazda starts production of new, SA-bound CX-5

Production of the second-generation Mazda CX-5 has kicked off in Japan.

Mazda has announced the start of production of the new CX-5 at its Ujina Plant in Hiroshima.

The second-generation compact crossover made its official debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show earlier this month.

The Japanese automaker says the new CX-5 will go on sale in its domestic market in February next year, before being rolled out to global markets. We can expect it to arrive in South Africa in mid-2017.

Some 1,57 million units of the original CX-5 have been produced since November 2011, with cumulative production reaching one million units by April 2015, making it the second fastest Mazda to reach that milestone (after the Mazda3).

The outgoing model accounts for around one quarter of Mazda’s global sales volume.

One of the first examples to roll off the assembly line is pictured above, painted in the new Soul Red Crystal hue.

MAZDA BOOSTS PRODUCTION OF NEW, SA-BOUND CX-5

The new Mazda CX-5 is scheduled to be launched in South Africa in the second quarter of this year, and the Japanese automaker has announced that it will soon increase production of the crossover in a bid to meet “growing demand” globally.

From November 2017, the brand says it will produce the new, second-generation CX-5 at Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi prefecture as well as at Hiroshima Plant, where it is currently built, helping it “respond quickly and flexibly to growing demand for SUVs globally”.

It’s a move that echoes Mazda’s strategy with the smaller CX-3, which it in December 2016 also started producing at the Hofu factory (again, in addition to units being built in Hiroshima).

“As with the CX-3, starting production of the CX-5 at Hofu Plant as well is part of our plan to build a production framework that gives us more flexibility between plants and between models,” said Masatoshi Maruyama, managing executive officer in charge of global production.

“We will do everything we can to get customers the crossover vehicles they want as quickly as possible.”
