The Mazda CX-5 Thread

The previous gen looked so unique to me, like it was punching above its weight...still one of my favourite cars. New one looks like any of the gazillion cars on the road sadly.

New Mazda CX-5: price and specs

The all-new, third-generation Mazda CX-5 has finally landed in South Africa. CAR attended a gala where the new range and pricing were confirmed.

Since its introduction in 2012, Mazda’s best-selling global nameplate, the CX-5, has established itself as a key contender in the midsize-SUV segment, and in doing so, reinforcing this Japanese brand’s long-standing relationship with the South African market. Developed using a Japanese philosophy known as Jinba-Itta, which focuses on the harmony between horse and rider, the new CX-5 has grown in every meaningful dimension, yet its maker claims it is more intimate, driver-focused, and comfortable than before. A key new measurement is the third-generation car’s 115 mm longer wheelbase, which translates to improved cabin space and comfort, as well as a 61-litre increase in luggage space. A lower loading height reduces the effort required to lift heavier items, while a flat cargo floor makes larger belongings easier to organise.

Showcased by a sophisticated new Navy Blue Mica exterior colour, developed as an evolution of the hue of the brand’s 1970s corporate colour, despite an increase in dimensions and footprint, the new car features a 5% reduction in overall drag coefficient, a key factor in overall efficiency. At launch, the CX-5 is powered by Mazda’s 2.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine delivering 132 kW at 6 000 r/min and 240 N.m of torque at 4 000 r/min. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain delivers power to the front wheels on Active and Dynamic grades, and all four wheels on Individual and flagship Homura models. Ride and handling are said to have been refined compared to the outgoing model, thanks to dedicated damper development, helping achieve a better balance between everyday comfort and on-the-move poise.

The new Mazda CX-5 has officially arrived in South Africa, with all 4 derivatives in the local range powered by a 2.5-litre petrol engine. Here’s what the newcomer costs…

- 4 derivatives available at launch
- 2.5-litre petrol mill offers 132 kW
- Both FWD & AWD configurations
- New Homura grade tops portfolio

The new Mazda CX-5 has officially touched down in South Africa, with this 3rd-generation crossover – which was revealed globally in July 2025 – gaining a new Homura flagship grade at the top of its 4-strong line-up.

As Cars.co.za reported in late July, the new KM-series CX-5 portfolio in South Africa comprises 4 derivatives at launch. The Japanese brand’s local division offers its familiar Active, Dynamic and Individual grades, along with a new “Homura” flagship specification.

All variants feature a “recalibrated” version of Mazda’s naturally aspirated 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine, which here generates peak outputs of 132 kW and 240 Nm. A 6-speed automatic transmission ships standard, with Mazda Southern Africa offering both front- (Active and Dynamic) and all-wheel-drive (Individual and Homura) derivatives.

The range kicks off with the CX-5 2.5 Active 6AT FWD, which is priced from R578 250. For the record, that represents a R7 750 increase over the outgoing model’s starting price, with that 3-strong line-up (topped by the Carbon Edition and instead employing a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre petrol engine worth 121 kW and 213 Nm) having featured pricing bookends of R570 500 and R688 400.

New Mazda CX-5 arrives in South Africa: Here's what you get for your money

The long-awaited third-generation Mazda CX-5 has landed in South Africa, featuring sharper looks, larger dimensions and fresh cabin technology.

Yet pricing remains close to that of the outgoing version, with the new four-model range kicking off at R578,250 and rising to R749,100. The previous version, for what it’s worth, had bookends of R570,500 and R688,400.

New Mazda CX-5 pricing

2.5L Active FWD – R578,250
2.5L Dynamic FWD – R636,000
2.5L Individual FWD – R717,000
2.5L Homura AWD – R749,100

The newcomer goes up against the Hyundai Tucson (from R559,900), Jetour T2 (R569,900), Ford Territory (R584,900), Nissan X-Trail (R599,900), Volkswagen Tiguan (R668,100), Subaru Forester (R699,000) and Toyota RAV4 (R770,500).

While its design is a relatively gentle evolution of its predecessor, the newcomer is significantly larger, with overall length having grown by 115mm to 4,690mm, while the width has increased by 15mm. All of that extra length goes into the wheelbase, which bodes well for interior space.

Mazda promises increased leg, knee and headroom, while boot space has grown from 438 to 466 litres. Flagship models feature a new panoramic sunroof and Mazda’s largest-ever touchscreen display, measuring 15.5 inches.

Whereas most of the previous range was powered by a 2.0-litre engine, the new line-up receives a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated unit that produces 132kW and 240Nm – an improvement of 11kW and 27Nm. The engine pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission, driving the front wheels in the Active, Dynamic and Individual variants and all four wheels in the case of the Homura flagship.

The mild-hybrid powertrain, available abroad, is also being considered for local introduction at a later date.

What features does the new CX-5 have?

The base 2.5L Active variant kicks things off with 17-inch Grey Metallic alloy wheels, a 12.9-inch touchscreen with built-in Google, seven airbags, Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Monitoring, to name the highlights.

The 2.5L Dynamic gains 19-inch Black Machined alloy wheels, synthetic leather seat upholstery with electric adjustment for the driver’s seat, a head-up display and a powered tailgate.

Over and above that, the 2.5L Individual receives a 12-speaker Bose sound system, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, heated outer rear seats, a 360-degree View Monitor and Front Cross Traffic Alert.

Finally, the Homura distinguishes itself further with Adaptive LED headlights, genuine leather seat trim in Black or Sports Tan, a hands-free liftgate function, a larger 15.5-inch touchscreen and all-wheel drive.

High-mileage drivers can also take advantage of a five-year, unlimited-kilometre service plan and warranty, which appears to be standard across the range.

Wish they kept the same 2.5 power of 143kw in the new CX-5

Still not happy that they deleted all buttons and gave us a huge screen.
