The designer of the original Mazda MX-5, Tom Matano, has died

Matano’s work included the third-gen RX-7, too

Tsutomu ‘Tom’ Matano, the designer of the original Mazda MX-5, has sadly passed away.

Born on 7 October 1947, the Japanese designer leaves behind an incredible legacy, most notably in the diminutive, perfect proportions and shape of the NA Mazda MX-5. Over 430,000 versions of that first generation roadster were sold, and the MX-5 went on to become the world’s best-selling roadster. More than a million of them have found homes since 1989 across four generations.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Tom Matano, the visionary designer behind icons like the Mazda MX-5 and FD RX-7,” said Mazda UK. “Tom believed cars should inspire joy and connection.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire Mazda community.

Next-Gen Toyota GR86 to be Based on Mazda MX-5?

Reports have suggested that the next-generation Toyota GR86 will be based on the Mazda MX-5. However, the two models are expected to differ significantly.

While the first and second generations of the Toyota 86 were co-developed with Subaru, Toyota is now rumoured to be shifting collaboration to Mazda for the next-generation model. According to Japanese publication Best Car, the new GR86 will be based on the MX-5, though differ significantly from the Mazda, with the GR86 rumoured to use a slightly extended version of the MX-5’s platform to accommodate rear seats.

Reports have further suggested the next-generation GR86 will employ a different powertrain than the MX-5, with the former expected to be powered by a Toyota 2.0-litre internal combustion engine (ICE) incorporating electric assistance. Notably, Mazda’s chief technical officer, Ryuichi Umeshita, told Road & Track in July that the MX-5 could employ a larger, 2.5-litre engine.
