The Mazda MX-5 Thread

No, this is me, and the MX-5 is better than the Honda 2000.

Why?

Because it is still in production.

Perhaps not for you or PP, but not everyone wants the same things in a car

Sure, some people prefer paying 2 - 3 times as much for something lesser with a maintenance plan. Their prerogative, usually due to ignorance, which people who know about cars tend to advise against.

I understand your point of view, and I did mention that the S2000 is a lot cheaper. That doesn't mean it's the better option for everyone. I personally prefer the looks of the new mx5 over both 86/BRZ and s2000. Does that make the Honda a bad or worse car? Not at all.

It just seems as if you refuse to accept any other opinion or point of view other than your own. From my limited contact with you on MYBB,You seem to love Audi,Apple, Plasma TV's and the S2000.

Your support for these brands on this forum seems to be quite fanatical. You provide solid arguments from your point of view(both objective and subjective in equal amounts IMO) for why they are great, and they all are great in their way, But not everyone wants what you want in a TV, car or PC. Just because someone has a different set of likes and requirements doesn't make them completely wrong or idiotic.

Someone who " knows about cars" might not choose the S2000 for their own reasons. Car enthusiasts can sometimes be blind to the faults of their machines.

Audi - don't really care here, most German and Japanese cars are excellent, but the fact is that they make brilliant second hand buys (B7 A4 being the best value out there for a R100,000 budget) and underneath they are VWs which, since they're the most popular vehicles, have the most info online about maintenance and mods, easiest to find parts, never any issue with parts availability, reliable, plenty of mechanics, etc.

Apple - high end products with the best build quality and support (especially through Apple Store overseas - walk in and get immediate swap outs etc.). MacBook Pros particularly, there are simply no competitors in the Windows camp. No competitors for iMac, Mac mini, etc. Pay more for the best when you compare with the crap that Windows manufacturers push out.

Plasma - much better than LCD, there cannot be any argument here unless it's for PC usage or most viewing is done under very bright conditions.

S2000 - don't really care, but it's a fact that they are the best hence the desirability and price. Still beating 10 year newer cars.

Buying cars new - terrible financial decision in most cases, mostly bought on credit with large balloons, decisions often fuelled by ignorance and fear of maintenance, wanting to keep up with the Joneses, etc.

I understand all of this. And agree with most of it.I think it's best to just leave it there. Besides, the derail is silly. I apologise for initiating it.

No problem, no need to apologise. Basically, consumers are sitting ducks who constantly get taken advantage of, I hope you see this as the core of most of my arguments.

The reviews just keep getting better & better for the ND MX-5

Verdict

The MX-5 continues the simple formula created some 25 years ago by the original car. It is lightweight, has acceptable power and a fun chassis to exploit. It’s entirely addictive to drive and feels faster through the bends than the speedo sometimes suggests. It still remains a great choice for the enthusiast and has the added bonus of being able to drop the roof to add more delight to the drive. The only real competition is the Toyota 86 and that’s a hardtop-only model. Both offer up an overdose of fun with the 86 being a more slidey product where the MX-5 prefers not to break traction easily. Pricing is also extremely similar, so the choice is even tougher to make.

Mazda MX-5 pricing

There's just one model in the MX-5 range and it's set at R389 800.

Test team opinion

While I wasn't particularly sold on the looks, I really appreciated the refreshing simplicity of this little sportscar. It's most enjoyable to drive and there's nothing complicated about it. The feel-good factor is through the roof. I also liked how quickly you can manually close the roof if the summer sun gets a little too hot. This is proof right here that money can buy you happiness. -David Taylor

We Like: Great design, sportscar thrills and open top fun

We don’t Like: Small boot, a tad expensive

Also consider: Toyota 86

Imagine if Mazda SA brought in the entry-level 1.6 at say around ~R320k how that would sell!

Must say the 2016 MX-5 looks damn sexy.

The MX-5 has always been a good looking car, but the difference between the 2015 and 2016 models is vast.

Lovely :D

In 2015, Euro NCAP paid special attention to roadsters, a category of relatively expensive cars but for which the importance of safety is often downplayed by automakers.

Euro NCAP: "None of the tested roadsters could achieve 5 stars, lacking new avoidance technology in particular. Nevertheless, with 4 stars, the Mazda MX-5 is the best in its category."
