2019 Mazda MX-5 to get 15% power hike and more safety kit

Sports car's 2.0-litre engine gets a boost from 158bhp to 181bhp; torque also increases slightly and exhaust note has been tweaked

Mazda has revealed that the updated MX-5, which is due on sale in August, will get a 15% hike in power, taking its more powerful 2.0-litre Skyactiv engine to 181bhp from the current 158bhp.

Improved combustion, a higher redline of 7500rpm (up from 6800rpm) and tweaked accelerator response all contribute to the revised MX-5’s new performance. The exhaust note has been fettled, too.

Torque increases by around 4lb ft to 151lb ft, although Mazda hasn’t revealed any new performance figures for the revised car. Top speed will rise from the current 133mph, while acceleration will be clipped closer to 7.0sec from 7.3sec.

For the first time, the MX-5 will also get automatic emergency braking for both forward and reverse gears, a reversing camera, a driver attention monitor and traffic sign recognition.

A brown roof will also be available, while the wheels will be finished in darker paint.

The changes will apply to both the standard MX-5 and MX-5 RF.

Mazda MX-5 confirmed with more power, higher rev limit

Mazda has confirmed that a fresh update for its MX-5 will bring “marked improvements in dynamic performance” thanks to more power and a higher rev limit.

The Japanese automaker says the updates – which also include “refinements” to design and packaging as well as an upgrade to safety technologies – will be applied to both the soft-top and RF versions of the little sportscar.

Of course, only the RF (that stands for “Retractable Fastback”, pictured above) is currently offered in South Africa, with the local arm of the brand having removed the roadster from its line-up in late 2017.

Mazda says the naturally aspirated 2,0-litre four-cylinder features “improved combustion and greater torque”, and complies with new WLTP test cycle. The powertrain benefits from what the automaker calls “refined acceleration control to minimise lag between throttle applications and vehicle response”.

The 2,0-litre mill is now “higher-revving and acoustically tuned”, with maximum engine speed raised from 6 800 to 7 500 r/min, peak power hiked from 118 to 135 kW (the latter at 7 000 as opposed to 6 000 r/min) and maximum torque increased from 200 to 205 N.m (at 4 000 rpm, some 600 units lower than before).

Some markets will furthermore gain new safety technologies in the form of advanced smart city brake support, which detects vehicles and pedestrians ahead and helps avoid collisions; smart city brake support (reverse), which detects vehicles and obstacles behind; and driver attention alert, a traffic sign recognition system and a rear-view camera.

Other updates include a darker finish for the 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels, and the availability of a new brown canopy colour for soft-top models.

We’ve asked Mazda Southern Africa whether there are plans to bring the upgraded MX-5 (with more power) to local shores, and will update this story once we hear back…

[UPDATE: Mazda Southern Africa has told CARmag.co.za “there are no immediate plans to introduce this updated model as part of our local product range”, adding that “at the moment, the plan is to focus on where the biggest demand is and retain the RF automatic transmission model in its current format”.]

Mazda MX-5 gets new features, more 'zoom-zoom'

Mazda’s long-running MX-5 has been updated for 2019 with a raft of detail improvements, several new features, and a 17 percent increase in power. And that’s been done the old-fashioned way, with attention to detail inside the two-litre Skyactiv-G petrol four, rather than by remapping the ECU for more power.

The Mazda whitecoats started by paring away the skirt area of the pistons, saving 27 grams on each one, and cleaning up the con-rods to save a further 41 grams each. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but when they’re going up and down 7000 times a minute, the reduction in inertia is significant.

Then they reshaped the inlet ports and fitted new high-diffusion, higher-pressure fuel injectors to improve fuel swirl in the combustion chamber, increased the opening angle and lift on the exhaust valves - a classic ‘stage one’ modification - widened the inside diameter of the exhaust manifold, and added a new exhaust system for a richer, more sonorous engine sound, and a 30 percent reduction in pumping losses.

The conventional flywheel was replaced by a lighter, dual-mass flywheel, and the final drive ratio shortened from 3.454:1 to 3.583:1, sacrificing a little top-end speed for a notable improvement in acceleration.

The result is an engine that revs harder - the redline goes up from 6800 to 7500rpm - and delivers a claimed 133kW at 7000 revs and 205Nm at 4000rpm, with more torque across the rev range, compared to the 118kW at 6000 revs and 200Nm at 4600rpm of its predecessor.

Also new for 2019 will be an optional brown canvas soft top, new black metallic 17 inch wheels, reach adjustment for the steering column with 42mm of travel, easier-to-open doors with redesigned door stops, revised cupholders and seat levers. Safety kit has been upgraded with a standard-fit rear-view camera, and new features such as traffic sign recognition and urban braking assist.

And lastly, the 2019 MX-5 is just three kilograms heavier than the previous model, thanks careful weight-watching and ingenious solutions such as an aluminium steering shaft in place of the previous steel one.

We’re waiting on an answer from Mazda SA as to when the upgraded MX-5 will be released in South Africa.

2019 Mazda MX-5 prices and new CO2 figures released

Sports car's 2.0-litre engine gets a boost from 158bhp to 181bhp; torque also increases slightly and exhaust note has been tweaked

Mazda's updated MX-5, which is on sale today, starts at the same £18,995 price tag as the pre-facelift version, with small price increases higher up in the range.

£100 has been added to the 1.5-litre SE-L Nav car, £200 to the Sport Nav, and £400 to the 2.0-litre Sport Nav car. A new GT Sport Nav trim has been added to the lineup, with adaptive LED lights, a reversing camera, blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert as standard on the new range-topper. It's priced £1000 above the next-highest spec, the Sport Nav, and is only available with the 2.0-litre engine.

Across the board, the car gets a 15% hike in power, taking its more powerful 2.0-litre Skyactiv engine to 181bhp from the current 158bhp.

New WLTP testing means that CO2 figures for the car have changed, with 4g/km CO2 added to the convertible's 1.5-litre engine, and 1g/km CO2 added to the 1.5-litre RF variant (both 143g/km). The 2.0-litre car now emits 5g/km less CO2 with a manual gearbox (156g/km), and 10g/km less when fitted with an automatic (157g/km).

Sales of both begin in the autumn.

Mazda MX-5 Skyactiv-G 2.0 2018 review

Should I buy one?

Ok, so there’s still not enough storage space, cabin room remains tight and motorway journeys will feature plenty of wind noise (even with the roof up). But the MX-5 is affordable, honest and, as a driver’s car, now a truly tempting package, thanks to its new 2.0 engine adding newfound vigour to its rear-wheel drive purity.

We loved it before and we love it even more now. So if you’re in the market for a sub-£30k roadster, the MX-5 2.0 really needs to be on your shopping list. Because this is where the fun’s at.
