McLaren 720S vs Mazda MX-5: Which is the most fun?

We consider how much of a supercar’s performance can you really use, and whether something smaller – and cheaper – is more fun.

When are people going to learn ,,, speed does not equal fun.The speed factor always wears off , while fun never gets old. There is a reason why certain fun cars are kept by there owners for over 15 years etc , while fast boring audis and golfs are only kept by there owners for a few years and then they move onto something else.

This is a generational thing ;)

Mazda ‘exploring’ various powertrain options for next-gen MX-5

Mazda executives says they are “exploring” various powertrain options for the next-generation MX-5.

Speaking to Autocar, research and development chief Ichiro Hirose said the little sportscar had to remain light, regardless of what sort of powertrain it employed.

“The lightweighting and compact size are essential elements of MX-5, so even if we apply electrification, we have to make sure it really helps to achieve the lightweighting of the vehicle,” Hirose-san said.

Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s head of global design, added the fifth generation of the MX-5 needed to fit buyers’ preferences, even if they were changing.

“The preference of people who enjoy driving sportscars might be changing, so we need to think about what direction society is going,” Maeda-san said.

“We want to look at the best powertrain to keep the vehicle lightweight, but because of the diversifying requirements and preference, we need to explore various options.

Mazda ponders MX-5's future

Japanese company could give hybrid or fully-electric powertrain to existing sports car

Mazda bosses are deliberating on the next generation of its existing sports car, the MX-5, by considering how to improve the popular model while potentially using an electrified powertrain.

Given its relatively low volume, the MX-5 might be one of the few cars that could avoid being electrified for its fifth generation but, either way, maintaining its light weight is crucial.

R&D boss Ichiro Hirose said: “The lightweighting and compact size are essential elements of MX-5, so even if we apply electrification, we have to make sure it really helps to achieve the lightweighting of the vehicle.”

Brand and design chief Ikuo Maeda flagged changing public opinions as a consideration on which powertrain to use. “The preference of people who enjoy driving sports cars might be changing, so we need to think about what direction society is going,” he said. “We want to look at the best powertrain to keep the vehicle lightweight, but because of the diversifying requirements and preference, we need to explore various options.

Tested: Mazda's MX-5 still sets hearts racing

Inside it is neat and simple with analogue dials, the rev counter in the middle with speedometer and vehicle information on either side. I’ve said it before, digital cockpits are here to stay but there’s something reassuring about “real” dials and instruments.

I’m considered one of the taller people in the world and despite a bit of an effort to enter and exit the car, the driving position is remarkably comfortable with its leather-wrapped steering wheel and perfect for spending time looking for sharp bends on the road. Look, it’s not a Land Cruiser or a Range Rover but that would be defeating the purpose of the roadster.

The Mazda MX-5 remains one of the world’s most iconic roadsters and practicality apart, it’s easy to see why so many have been sold. It’s a smile a mile at R538200 as you head out with the top down and fling it around with gay abandon.

It comes with a three-year unlimited kilometre factory warranty, three-year service plan, three-year road assistance and a five-year corrosion warranty.

Mazda Miata Documentaries | EP2 1989 The First NA Miata - savagegeese

The Mazda Miata MX-5 has existed for over 30 years, in part 2 of the documentary series we look at the NA Miata, originally on sale in 1989 whose production ran for 10 years.

We discuss the creation, the design and why it existed. While the US market was the primary buyer Mazda Motors of Japan worked for hand and hand with the American design studio to transform.

Despite reviews and lust for modern affordable cars like the BRZ, Civic Type R, WRX, Golf, the Miata remains one of the few pure RWD sports cars for the common car lover.

This is an Independent Project Produced By Savagegeese

Sit back and enjoy the Series.

NB Mazda Miata | EP3 Miata Slow Evolution - savagegeese

In 2019 the Mazda Miata has existed for 30 years, in part 3 of the documentary series we look at the NB Miata, originally on sale in 1998.

We discuss and review the sequel with one of the primary designers, Ken Saward who also helped to design the Dodge Viper.

The American studio took a lead in design as this was primarily an NA market product.

Despite reviews and lust for modern affordable cars like the BRZ, Civic Type R, Suburu WRX, VW Golf, the Miata remains one of the few pure RWD sports cars for the common car lover.
