BMW 3 Series vs All-New Mercedes-Benz C-Class: What can you expect?

The luxury sedan market will be heating up locally in 2021 as two established players go head-to-head. The #CarsAwards-winning BMW 3 Series is a good car, but the arrival of an all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class will surely ruffle some feathers. Here's how the 3 Series and C-Class will square off!

Despite the emergence and dominance of the SUV, premium carmakers still insist sedans have a role to play in the car market. BMW's 3 Series is still a sales performer and many would suggest that it's the dynamic benchmark. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class still brings in substantial revenue for the Stuttgart outfit, despite the rise of the A-Class sedan and CLA offerings.

Launched in early 2019, the BMW 3 Series offered a new platform, a new infotainment system, and an array of engines. The all-new Bavarian had the market to itself mostly, despite some quiet updates to the refined Audi A4 range. Now the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been revealed in early 2021 and is determined to elbow its fellow countryman in the sales race. As far as timings go, the Mercedes-Benz plant in East London, Eastern Cape is scheduled to start C-Class production in the middle of 2021, with SA customer cars hitting showrooms in the 3rd or 4th quarter of this year.

We'll be putting both cars head-to-head to see which is the better German sedan to purchase in 2021.

New Mercedes-Benz C-Class production starts (with SA to follow ‘shortly’)​

Mercedes-Benz says it has commenced production of its new C-Class sedan in Germany, with the plant in South Africa due to follow “shortly”.

Both the saloon and estate versions of the new C-Class have started rolling off the production line in Bremen, the lead plant in the global C-Class production network.

This will “shortly” be followed by start-ups at international locations in Beijing, China and East London, South Africa. In East London, both right- and left-hand-drive W206-generation sedan models will again be built for both the local market and worldwide export.

The South African factory has gained a new body shop system as well as “improved flexibility, efficiency and sustainability”. Mercedes-Benz says the East London facility’s new paint shop, meanwhile, “reduces energy consumption per vehicle by 25 percent”.

New Mercedes-AMG C63e To Get Hybrid And F1 Tech

A new report by Autocar suggests the range-topping next-gen C-Class will actually be called the C63e thanks to the use of the P3 plug-in hybrid system.

It is scheduled to arrive in showrooms next year and will go by the name of the Mercedes-AMG C63e 4Matic+ EQ Power+. Yes, that is quite the mouthful but it should be quite the car.

Powering the C63e will be a longitudinally-mounted version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine used by the A45 S, with a 48V integrated starter motor in the nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT automatic gearbox. The electric motor will drive the rear axle and a battery pack under the boot floor will enable electric-only running.

It’s official: Mercedes-AMG details next C63’s electrified four-pot

Yes, the rumours were true. Mercedes-AMG has effectively confirmed the next-generation C63 will be powered by an electrified four-cylinder petrol engine.

Developed under what the Affalterbach-based division calls the “E Performance drivetrain strategy”, the new hybrid system will be applied to both eight- (in the rumoured GT73, we suspect) and four-cylinder (in the hottest C-Class) engines.

In both cases, the arrangement will include a permanently excited synchronous electric motor, a “high-performance” battery developed in Affalterbach and fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive.

The electric motor will be positioned on the rear axle, integrated with an electrically shifted two-speed transmission and an electronically controlled rear axle differential lock in a “compact” electric drive unit. The 400 V battery is described as “lightweight” (it weighs a claimed 89 kg) and will be sited above the rear axle.

Mercedes-AMG calls the battery “HPB80”, confirming it features a 6,1 kWh capacity, 70 kW of continuous power and 150 kW of peak power (the latter for up to ten seconds). It features direct cooling of the cells.

According to the company, the top version of the AMG Performance Hybrid drivetrain is “technically” able to produce “more than 600 kW system power and over 1 000 N.m system torque”. Depending on the future vehicle, this enables a claimed acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in “less than 3,0 seconds”.

New Mercedes-Benz C-Class to get soft-top Cabriolet option

Two-door drop-top C-Class is set to make its return for W206 generation; coupé likely inbound

Just a few weeks after unwrapping its Mk5 C-Class in saloon and estate form, Mercedes-Benz has begun road testing the Cabriolet soft-top variant.

The W206-generation C-Class will be only the second iteration in the model's history to be offered as a convertible, following the introduction of the current model in 2016.

It will likely be launched alongside a fixed-roof, two-door coupé model, as Mercedes renews its attack on the Audi A5 and BMW 4 Series, both of which are available in three bodystyles.

This latest sighting serves as confirmation that Mercedes still sees a market for its two-door C-Class models. Earlier this year, chief operating officer Markus Schäfer told Autocar the firm would start to pare back the number of bodystyles and variants of each model in its line-up, as it shifts focus to expanding the EQ range of electric cars.

"We reached a portfolio of close to 50 vehicles last year, and there’s more to come on the electric side with our EQ line-up,” he said. “We have some limitations in terms of what we can do in research and development.

We’re going to need a lot more time in the new C-Class to fully judge its performance and new-found sportiness, but what is evident from our first taste is that it’s clearly right back into the reckoning.

In volume-selling C220d guise, it remains a tremendously well-rounded proposition, with outstanding levels of comfort, refinement and quality. However, these traditional traits now come with an ability to engage, connect and even excite the driver.

This is a wonderfully complete car that will no doubt appeal to a wide range of customers.

Merc C-Class Production Starts in SA

Production of the new C-Class has begun at Merc’s East London Plant and the firm has invested an additional R3-billion into environmentally-friendly facility upgrades at the plant.

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is on the way and production has now started in East London following a commemorative announcement today. In addition to the initial R10-billion investment announced in 2018, Mercedes-Benz has announced an additional R3-billion investment that will include environmentally-friendly upgrades to the plant’s paint shop, body shop and assembly and logistics warehouse.

Inside, nice screens, seats, wheel but altogether looks a mess and fingerprint magnet and scratch mad gloss black finish... no thanks.

Having driven both types of cars, I would actually go for a C-Class over a 3 series in a heartbeat.

They're just a much nicer driving vehicle. Way more pleasant to do the commute in on a daily basis.

Should I buy one?

Perhaps Mercedes has forgotten or doesn’t care how its cars used to feel, and doesn’t think that they ought to be fun to drive.

I think that’s a shame, but when it easily sells two million cars a year and has just launched one with impressive features and showroom appeal, it probably won’t care less.

Mercedes SA ups investment as first new C-Class rolls off the line

Mercedes-Benz South Africa celebrated a milestone this week, when the first new-generation C-Class rolled off the assembly line in East London.

But there was more good news to follow, as the carmaker used the occasion to announce that an additional R3 billion would be invested in the local plant, this being in addition to the R10 billion investment that was announced back in 2018. The latter has resulted in significant upgrades to the Eastern Cape plant, including a new body shop, advanced new robots and three additional lines in the assembly shop.

“South Africa is an important location in our global Mercedes-Benz production network,” Mercedes board member Jörg Burzer said. “The team in East London made a remarkable contribution to the international ramp-up of the new C-Class that we produce through efficient, flexible, digital and sustainable operations. Thanks to the exceptional work of our colleagues in South Africa and all over the world and their first-class cooperation, our modern plants are able to produce outstanding vehicles like the new C-Class.”

agree, MB as a brand puts +10 on your age.

their AMG range will add more style and detail (much like BMW with their M Sport), but only an old man will fancy a C Class over a 3 series.
