I might be in the minority...but Mastodon hasn't put anything notable since Crack the Skye, they're very overrated imo.

Lots of claims of album of the year going around.

Regarding Mastodon, I rather like the new album as a "pop metal" album. Definitely better than The Hunter.

It's terrible.
The background is totally overpowering the frequency range.
The hats, snares, etc are all pushed back.
And you can hear it's not pushed back for effect but rather because of clashing frequencies.

I have mixed tunes down for years and from the first drum hit I could hear it was a bad mixing job.
The atmosphere is taking up the frequency range and then they still try to fit the drums in there.

I think it's intentional. Washed out wall of sound to further highlight that "lost in space" vibe.

Then again I'm no professional.

Darkspace is a rather praised band. It's regarded as 'space metal' so I'm pretty sure the way it sounds is intentional ;P

I can see this ultimately going the way of ''Mastodon sold out'' because they decided to not release the same album for 30-years. These guys are exceptional musicians and they've changed their sound and concepts from album to album. They're a real treat. Personally, my favourite is Blood Mountain but I think all of their albums are worth listening to.
