Gaza - Israel's air force fired about 30 missiles at targets in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, destroying several Hamas police compounds and killing more than 120 people, al Jazeera television and witnesses said.

The Israeli military confirmed they had conducted strikes, saying they targeted "terrorist infrastructure".

Television footage showed dead bodies scattered on a road and wounded and dead being carried away by distraught rescuers. There was widespread damage to buildings.

More than 120 people were killed and 200 were wounded in the attacks, Al Jazeera said, citing the head of the Gaza ambulance service.

Hamas police spokesperson Islam Shahwan said a police compound in Gaza City had been hosting a graduation ceremony for new personnel when it was attacked. Police chief Tawfiq Jabber was among the dead, the radio said.

"I'm afraid we have at least 40 dead," Shahwan said.

Uniformed bodies lay in a pile and the wounded writhed in pain, television pictures showed. Rescuers carried those showing signs of life to cars and ambulances, while others tried to revive the unconscious.

Several the rescuers beat their heads and shouted: "Allahu akbar (God is greatest)." One badly wounded prostrate man was quietly reciting verses from the Koran.

Elsewhere in Gaza, at least two people were killed and 30 wounded from an attack in Khan Younis, a refugee camp in the south. At one site, there was a huge crater in the ground. Nearby medics carried people into an ambulance.

Witnesses said the attacks were carried out by warplanes and combat helicopters.

A Reuters correspondent said Gaza City port and security installations of the Islamist Hamas group were badly damaged. Thick black smoke billowed over the city.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the attack, which followed a decision by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's security cabinet to widen reprisals for cross-border Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel.

A six-month truce expired last week in Gaza.

Since then, at least six militants have been killed by Israeli air strikes and dozens of rockets and mortar shells from Gaza have slammed into Israel, damaging homes and causing panic.

Olmert warned Islamist group Hamas on Thursday to stop firing rockets or pay a heavy price. "I will not hesitate to use Israel's might to strike Hamas and (Islamic) Jihad," he told al Arabiya television, an Arab broadcaster widely watched in Gaza.

About a dozen rockets and mortar bombs were fired from Gaza on Friday. One accidentally struck a northern Gaza house killing two Palestinian sisters, aged five and 13, and wounding a third, Palestinian medics said.

they had it coming. There was a peace deal... asked for by Israel, but Hamas kept up the terror tactics... so the Israeli Military hit back. Happened like this a gazillion times already. The terrorists don't know how to sit on their hands for one day. Until they give up their terror tactics the Israeli military will keep hitting back. They brought it on themselves... now watch them whine and cry to the international community about how mean Israel is... Boo Hoo!

The whole strategy of the Palestinians appears to be one of being the victim. They taunt and provoke until Israel takes a swing. Now they will go and cry in front of the cameras, telling the world how hard done by they are. They don't want a settlement. They want Jerusalem and Israel and won't stop until they either get them or die trying.
 
Hamas [-]ends the cease fire[/-] finishes rearming, starts indiscriminately barraging Israeli towns( and evidently Gaza as well killing two Palestinian girls :o) with rockets and then cries foul when Israel retaliates :rolleyes:

Of course the liberal MSM is there doing their propaganda for them. Barely mentioning the attacks on Israeli towns yet giving plenty of coverage to Paliwood so the lemmings freak out at "Israeli aggression"

Until Israel pulls out of the illegally occupied territories and starts negotiating in good faith the Palestinian freedom fighters will continue their struggle, methinks.

Pity about the "two Palestinian sisters, aged five and 13". Collateral damage, I suppose.

Israel occupied those territories after the Arab attacks of 1958 and 1967. Fair spoils of war. I think they should keep them. Let the Palestinians go live with their Arab sympathizers. It is interesting though that the other Arab states really don't want the Palestinians either... other than supplying them with weapons which only gets more and more of them killed.

there is no "negotiating in good faith" with terrorists who deny your right to exist as a nation.

Your "Arab sympathizers" want the Palestinians restored to full rights on THEIR land, that was forcefully and brutally taken from them in 1948 and after.

Can't blame them, really.

I'd be interested to know if they were living near a rocket factory and if so, why that happened?
 
Hamas should stop messing with Israel, it's a war they will never win. IMO they are the ones constantly breaking negotiations.

The same mentality that thought the Nats could oppress and lock up its opposition forever ?

And all this is done under the name of what? Oh god wanted us to have the land; this concept is so idiotic that I can almost not give a damn.

The only way for israel to win this is to kill every single palestinian and muslim on the planet.

Unless they are able to do that they will eventually lose.

Perhaps it's time they tried something different.

PS: Even the Nats weren't so stupid as to bomb Soweto.

I don't recall many rockets flying from Soweto to hit civilian areas in JHB. It took a while for them to become militant in the same way as the Palestinians anyway.
