Truly fugly....

As the new generation of the MINI Countryman sees its premiere, the tradition-steeped British brand continues its advance into the premium compact segment. The new MINI Countryman is the biggest and most versatile model in the brand's 57-year history. Having been completely newly developed, it now reflects considerable advancements in the areas of space, functionality, athletic flair and premium characteristics.

The new MINI Countryman (combined fuel consumption: 7.0 - 2.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 159 - 49 g/km) achieves its unique standing among direct competitors due to its powerfully expressive design, efficiently shaped bodywork and in particular its unmatched driving agility. The latest version of the all-wheel drive system ALL4 ensures driving fun beyond paved roads, too. What is more, the new MINI Countryman is the first model of the brand to be available with a plug-in hybrid drive. In the form of the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 it has a range of up to 40 kilometres running on electrical power alone.

20 centimetres longer than the predecessor model

The new MINI Countryman is some 20 centimetres longer than its predecessor and approximately 3 centimetres wider. Its wheelbase has been extended by 7.5 centimetres. This growth results in significantly increased space on five fully-fledged seats as well as a definite increase in storage volume and luggage transport versatility. The raised seating position ensures an excellent view and hallmark driving fun. The rear seats can be shifted longitudinally by up to 13 centimetres. The folding rear backrest offers a 40 : 20 : 40 split. It also provides a variable tilt angle so as to be able to either increase seating comfort or gain additional storage space at the rear. The luggage compartment volume is 450 litres and can be extended as required to a total of 1,309 litres. This constitutes a maximum increase of 220 litres as compared to the predecessor model.

The all-new Mini Countryman has been revealed, positioned as the largest model in the brand’s line-up, and the first to be available as a plug-in hybrid.

The second-generation Countryman – which is scheduled to launch in South Africa in March 2017 – measures a whopping 200 mm longer than its predecessor and is around 30 mm wider too. Its wheelbase, meanwhile, has grown by 75 mm, which translates into an increase in both passenger room and luggage space (the latter a claimed 450 litres, expandable to 1 309 litres).

The BMW-backed brand appears to have endowed the new Countryman with the raised seating position and hiked ride-height so popular with consumers at the moment, while also making sure to retain the option of all-wheel drive.

Mini says familiar engine options will be available at launch. The Mini Cooper Countryman, for instance, employs the brand’s 1,5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, worth 100 kW and 220 N.m. The Cooper S variant uses the 2,0-litre four-pot, with 141 kW and 280 N.m.

But the range will also include the first-ever production Mini with plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 (pictured below) uses the same turbo triple as the Cooper, but adds a 65 kW synchronous electric motor on the rear axle, taking total system output to 165 kW and 385 N.m.

The Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 has an electric-only top speed of 125 km/h and a claimed electric range of 40 km. This hybrid’s claimed fuel consumption, meanwhile, comes in at 2,1 L/100 km.

As an alternative to the standard six-speed manual transmission, a six-speed Steptronic transmission (standard on the hybrid) will be offered for the Cooper derivative, while an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox will be available for the Cooper S Countryman.

Inside, the central instrument display features a touchscreen function for the first time. And one interesting option is something Mini calls the Picnic Bench, a flexible cushioned surface that folds out of the luggage compartment and provides seating for two people.

The 2017 Mini Countryman has been revealed, but we understand a more rugged variant with a raised ride height and skid plates is in development

Although the new Mini Countryman majors on premium feel and urban sophistication, Autocar understands a more rugged and off-road-capable spin-off version of the new Mini is under development.

Sources say it will feature a raised ride height and skid plates front and rear. Other tweaks could include bigger driving lights, new wheels and modified front and rear bumper designs.

The Countryman is based on the same UKL2 platform as the BMW 2 Series and new BMW X1. Some time ago, Autocar drove an all-wheel-drive version of the Countryman’s 2 Series sister car at BMW’s test track in southern France, where it proved surprisingly adept.

The platform’s inherent stiffness clearly contributed, but much of the car’s ability on the off-road course was down to carefully managed electronic control of the brakes and how the power was put down, plus impressive cross-axle torque distribution.

Although the more rugged Countryman is not going to have the wheel travel needed for hardcore off-road driving, evidence from driving the prototype 2 Series suggests that it will be able to handle surprisingly tough tracks, especially if the conditions are not waterlogged. The Mini’s shorter overhangs provide another distinct advantage in off-road use.

Although the original Mini didn’t spawn a production off-roader (Mini creator Alec Issigonis did experiment with the tiny Mini-related Austin Ant 4x4 prototype), the iconic Mini Cooper rally cars and the modern Mini Dakar off-road racer would give authentic backing to the proposed rugged Mk2 Countryman.

The second generation of the MINI Countryman is the biggest and most versatile model in the entire range of the tradition-steeped British brand. And another superlative now applies to the power unit of the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman. With an output of 170 kW/231 hp, it is the most powerful engine ever to be fitted in a MINI: in combination with the standard all-wheel drive system ALL4 and a robust vehicle concept, it ensures that the latest addition to the family of top John Cooper Works athletes takes the MINI experience to a whole new level - in terms of both race track feeling on the road and extreme driving fun over unsurfaced terrain.

Last year, the second-generation Mini Countryman was revealed, with the BMW-backed brand positioning it as the largest model in its line-up. And now the inevitable John Cooper Works derivative has arrived to take its place at the very top of the range.

As expected, the five-seater Mini John Cooper Works Countryman gains the brand’s most powerful engine, linked to an all-wheel drive system.

The 2,0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine makes 170 kW and 350 N.m, which allows the obligatory sprint from zero to 100 km/h to be completed in a claimed 6,5 seconds (regardless of whether the standard six-speed manual or optional eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission is fitted). That’s around eight-tenths of a second faster to three figures than the all-wheel drive Cooper S Countryman.

Of course, the JCW version also features sports suspension, 18-inch light alloy wheels and Brembo brakes, as well as a handful of aerodynamic additions and a model-specific cockpit (with JCW sports seats).

The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman will make its public debut in April 2017 at the Shanghai Motor Show, before becoming available in South Africa in the third quarter of 2017.
