The outgoing head of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa says the Japanese brand’s local division plans to launch a 150 kW flagship version of the Triton in the opening half of 2026, a move he hopes will take the bakkie’s sales to “the next level”.
Thato Magasa, outgoing Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa, made the comments during an interview conducted in Cars.co.za‘s custom-built podcast booth at Naamsa’s recent South African Auto Week 2025 in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.
“When we launched the new Triton last year [in November 2024], demand actually exceeded supply, so we’ve had some good take-up on new Triton,” said Magasa, who is in the process of transitioning into a new role as CEO of Tata Passenger Vehicles in SA (a brand that, like Mitsubishi, is distributed locally by Motus).
In December 2024, Mitsubishi Motors SA registered 126 units of the Triton, seeing this model rank 10th on the list of SA’s best-selling bakkies. However, sales fell to 75 units in January 2025, with a further 308 units registered over the following 8 months (translating to a monthly average of just 39 units). Magasa, however, says there’s more to come.

Mitsubishi has whipped the wraps off the Triton Savana, a limited-edition Triton designed for off-roading.
Mitsubishi has unveiled the Triton Savana, a special edition of the new-generation Triton double-cab, which we’ve evaluated for a road test in 2025. Exclusively available in South America, the Savana variant is based on the range-topping Triton model available in the latter market. The Savana adds off-road accessories and two new exterior colours – Rally Yellow and Forest Green – to the Triton package.
The Savana edition features rock sliders, which serve a dual purpose as side steps; a roof rack; and a functional snorkel – the latter increasing water-wading depth. The Savana sits on 18-inch black alloy wheels, wrapped in off-road tyres.
The Triton Savana’s 2.4-litre, four-cylinder bi-turbo diesel engine churns out 150 kW and 470 N.m. Power is delivered to the road via an eight-speed automatic transmission and Mitsubishi’s Super Select II 4WD system. The Triton Savana has seven selectable drive modes.

Mitsubishi has handed the Triton a fresh face. However, the redesign applies only to a single model sold overseas.
The new Mitsubishi Triton, which we evaluated for a road test in the March 2025 issue of CAR magazine, has received a new face in Thailand. However, exclusive to the Street variant sold in the latter market, there’s been no confirmation whether the redesign will be applied to other derivatives in the future.
The revamped front end features a more angular grille, replete with diagonal inserts, and revised lower bumper. The Street variant further gains a set of new 17-inch alloy wheels, finished in black.
The Street derivative employs Mitsubishi’s familiar 2.4-litre, four-cylinder single-turbo diesel motor, tuned to churn out 110 kW and 330 N.m of torque. Power is delivered to the road via a rear-wheel drivetrain, coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Mitsubishi has announced ride and handling upgrades for the Triton bakkie.
Mitsubishi has announced the new-generation Triton, which we sampled (in Xtreme spec) ahead of its official local launch and road tested in the March 2025 issue of CAR magazine, will receive a selection of upgrades to improve ride and handling.
So, what changes have been made to the JDM-spec Triton? Well, for starters, the Japanese marque has revised the front suspension and body mounts to reduce vibration when traversing unsealed surfaces. This includes the fitment of Yamaha Motor’s Performance Damper. The manufacturer says the front and rear shocks’ response to bumps has also been improved.
It is worth noting that the upgrades apply only to JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) models, with the automaker not yet having confirmed whether (or when) the South African-spec Triton lineup will receive these upgrades. Though, as a reminder, as we noted in our Every bakkie confirmed for SA in 2026 feature, a new engine option will be introduced to the local range in the coming 12 months.

Mitsubishi Australia has teased the Triton Raider. Drawing inspiration from the heavily modified Triton rally-raid bakkie that claimed victory at the 2025 Asia Cross Country Rally, the upcoming model will sit at the top of the Japanese automaker’s Triton lineup (in Australia, at least). The Triton Raider was developed with input from Australian engineers and completed its durability testing in the largest mountain range in South Australia, Flinders Ranges.
Designed for Australia’s challenging terrain, the Triton Raider is equipped with upgraded suspension and model-specific alloy wheels – the latter shod in all-terrain tyres. To enhance its go-anywhere capability, this model also gains additional underbody protection.
The Triton Raider will employ Mitsubishi’s new twin-turbocharged 2.4-litre diesel engine, which produces 150 kW and 470 N.m of torque. Mitsubishi has whipped the wraps of the Triton Raider, a new, rally-inspired model developed in partnership with Australian engineering company Premcar.
Following the release of a teaser in March 2026, Mitsubishi has officially revealed the Triton Raider. Positioned as the new flagship derivative in Australia, this more off-road-focused model was developed in collaboration with Australian engineering company Premcar.
The rally-inspired Triton features uprated front and rear suspension, replete with an improved damper package. The Raider is equipped with a set of 18-inch ROH Assault wheels, wrapped in Bridgestone AT002 all-terrain tyres. Thanks to the upgrades, the front and rear ride height have increased by 25 and 10 mm, respectively. The Raider is also 20 mm wider than the standard model. Adding to its go-anywhere proviso, the new derivative has been fitted with additional underbody protection.
Stepping inside, the Triton Raider features black leather upholstery, replete with orange contrast stitching. ‘Raider’ is embroidered on the headrests and a badge of this model’s name can be found on the centre console.

Terra spec adds “premium” touches – such as a new black-and-brown colour scheme, chrome finishes and leather trim – to the Triton’s cabin. ‘Terra’ branding can be found on the headrests. Chrome trim has also been applied to the exterior badging, door handles and wing mirrors, while the front skid plate and roof rails are painted silver. The Terra is fitted with automatically deploying/retracting side steps and a set of 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. The package further features LED lighting for the load bed, a damping system for the tailgate and an electrically operated load bay cover.
The Terra retains the “standard” model’s 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and 7.0-inch instrument cluster. A suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are included with the package.

The Mitsubishi Triton Bi-Turbo has finally arrived in South Africa, slotting in at the very summit of the Japanese brand’s local bakkie range. And Cars.co.za can confirm pricing for this fresh 150 kW derivative.
As a reminder, the 6th-generation Triton was revealed in Thailand in July 2023, before arriving in South Africa in November 2024. At launch in Mzansi, all variants employed a single-turbo 2.4-litre diesel engine, which offered 81 kW/200 Nm in GL guise and 135 kW/430 Nm in all other derivatives.
Now, the bi-turbo version of this 2.4-litre 4-pot has finally made local landfall, offered exclusively in top-spec double-cab trim. This so-called “Super High Power” motor generates 150 kW and 470 Nm (the latter on tap between 1 500 and 2 750 rpm), peak outputs that are delivered to all 4 wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission as standard. Braked towing capacity is 3 500 kg.
According to our information, the new Triton 2.4 DI-D Bi-Turbo Double Cab 6AT 4×4 is priced at R959 990, effectively commanding a R100 000 premium over the 2.4 DI-D Double Cab Athlete 6AT 4×4 (R859 990). It furthermore slots in some R70 000 above the Edition 46, which comes kitted out with extras like a nudge bar, a black canopy, a roof rack, a rubberised load bin and Dunlop AT3G tyres (265/65 R18).

The Mitsubishi Triton Bi-Turbo has finally arrived in South Africa, slotting in at the very summit of the Japanese brand’s local bakkie range. And Cars.co.za can confirm pricing for this fresh 150 kW derivative.
As a reminder, the 6th-generation Triton was revealed in Thailand in July 2023, before arriving in South Africa in November 2024. At launch in Mzansi, all variants employed a single-turbo 2.4-litre diesel engine, which offered 81 kW/200 Nm in GL guise and 135 kW/430 Nm in all other derivatives.
Now, the bi-turbo version of this 2.4-litre 4-pot has finally made local landfall, offered exclusively in top-spec double-cab trim. This so-called “Super High Power” motor generates 150 kW and 470 Nm (the latter on tap between 1 500 and 2 750 rpm), peak outputs that are delivered to all 4 wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission as standard. Braked towing capacity is 3 500 kg.
According to our information, the new Triton 2.4 DI-D Bi-Turbo Double Cab 6AT 4×4 is priced at R959 990, effectively commanding a R100 000 premium over the 2.4 DI-D Double Cab Athlete 6AT 4×4 (R859 990). It furthermore slots in some R70 000 above the Edition 46, which comes kitted out with extras like a nudge bar, a black canopy, a roof rack, a rubberised load bin and Dunlop AT3G tyres (265/65 R18).
