As part of the announcement of its 3-year mid-term business plan, Mitsubishi has released the first official teaser shot of its next-generation Triton. The bakkie is one of 16 new models – including a mysterious fully electric pick-up – planned for global markets for the next 5 years.
Dubbed “Challenge 2025”, the mid-term business plan is intended to “establish a stable revenue base through selection and concentration” of the Japanese company’s regional strategy. It will furthermore see Mitsubishi – which is a member of the Alliance along with Renault and Nissan – further increase its expenditure on electrification.
The teaser image of the Triton shows the next-generation bakkie – with its front-end lighting signature on full display – alongside a similarly disguised PPV (that’s “Pick-up Passenger Vehicle”, so surely the next-gen Pajero Sport), a 3-row SUV and an MPV, which are all listed as internal combustion models in the “global” section.
From what we understand, the new Triton is scheduled for a reveal later in 2023. We already know the new version of the bakkie will be developed alongside the next-generation Nissan Navara, though official details (including powertrain plans) are still decidedly thin on the ground.

New Mitsubishi Triton teased ahead of 2023 reveal, and it’s getting an EV version
Mitsubishi plans to go all-electric by the year 2035, but it’s not giving up on its traditional internal combustion models just yet.
The Japanese carmaker presented its Mid-term Business Plan on Friday, which also included a teaser image of its next-generation Triton, which is set to be revealed later this year.
While the teaser doesn’t reveal much as the vehicle remains hidden beneath a cover, it does give us a glimpse of its new split-level lighting system upfront, which will accompany a new interpretation of the company’s Dynamic Shield grille.
The presentation also included a teaser of an upcoming electric bakkie, which is likely to be a close relative of the new ICE Triton model, although no further details have been furnished at this point.
According to WhichCar, the next-generation Mitsubishi Triton will be longer and wider than the current model, and design-wise it’ll boast a squarer body and other styling cues inspired by the latest Outlander.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (hereafter, Mitsubishi Motors) will display the Mitsubishi XRT Concept - a concept car of the all-new Triton pickup truck planned for launch in fiscal year 2023 - at the 2023 Bangkok International Motor Show.
The Triton is Mitsubishi Motors' top-selling model manufactured at the Laemchabang Factory in Thailand and the company's global strategic vehicle exported to about 150 countries around the world. With its first full redesign in approximately nine years, the all-new Triton will be the sixth generation of the brand's midsize pickup truck. After the launch in Thailand in fiscal 2023, it will be released sequentially in the ASEAN region, Oceania and other global markets.
A concept car of the all-new Triton, the Mitsubishi XRT Concept is characterized by a fierce expression on the front and a robust hood that continues to the side with bold, horizontally-themed styling. Further, the concept car is fitted with front and rear over fenders as well as mud-terrain tires, giving it the powerful drive to compete in grueling rallies and the dynamism to dash across the terrain. The body features a camouflage design inspired by lava rocks packed with condensed energy, and the sides have been adorned with a graphic of the 10-parallel line Ralliart brand icon that expresses Mitsubishi Motors' passion for driving.
At the Asia Cross Country Rally 2023, Team Mitsubishi Ralliart, which receives technical support from Mitsubishi Motors, plans to compete with a prototype cross-country model of the all-new Triton (Group T1 specifications) in its quest for a second straight victory. Hiroshi Masuoka, a two-time Dakar Rally champion driver in 2002 and 2003, will stay on as team director, and Mitsubishi Motors engineers will perform pre-testing and accompany the team to provide support at the rally. Mitsubishi Motors uses expertise gained from rallies as feedback in the development of its production vehicles, as it seeks to create vehicles with Mitsubishi Motors-ness, which deliver safe, comfortable driving enjoyment in any weather or road conditions.

Revealed this week at the Bangkok Motor Show, the XRT Concept wears a camouflage paint job inspired by lava rocks, but the lines you see behind that are a very close preview of the new Triton. With its large and imposing grille, and bulging fenders, the new-generation bakkie has a more macho and truck-like appearance.
This new model is also expected to underpin the next-gen Nissan Navara through Mitsubishi’s renewed ties with the Renault-Nissan Alliance, although it remains to be seen just how closely the Nissan will resemble its Japanese cousin.
The XRT Concept features Ralliart branding, as well as mud-terrain tyres and front and rear overfenders, pointing to a possible Raptor-rivalling flagship version of the upcoming truck.

Now Is the Time for a Mitsubishi Midsize Truck in the U.S.
Mitsubishi should provide an affordable alternative to the Ford Ranger Raptor and Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro in America.
The resurgence of midsize trucks in the U.S. market has me wondering just where the Mitsubishi Triton is in the middle of America’s off-road infatuation. Perhaps more than any other time in the past, right now seems ideal for the midsizer from Mitsubishi to come to the U.S. after a years-long hiatus.
The last time around, we had the Mitsubishi Raider — just a rebadged Dodge Dakota — but now need a ‘Mitsu truck, proper, to compete with midsizers like the Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma.
At least that’s how I feel every time I run across a Mitsubishi L200 on the Texas-Mexico border. The L200 is a Mitsubishi Triton by another name, sold on the Mexican market in a number of trims that start at about $502,000 pesos, or $28,550 at current exchange rates. The base model has a 2.4-liter four cylinder engine, but higher trims come with a 2.4-liter turbodiesel inline-4. And, yes, either model comes with the option for a six-speed manual transmission. Here is a manual turbodiesel Triton in Ralliart guise, kitted out for competition:

The Mitsubishi Triton Halo AT35 prototype has been revealed at Nampo 2023 in the Free State, previewing what the Japanese firm’s South African division describes as the “ultimate iteration” of its double-cab bakkie.
Right now, details are frustratingly thin on the ground. For instance, it’s not yet clear when the production version will hit the market in South Africa, nor how much it will cost. In addition, Mitsubishi Motors SA made no mention of the powertrain and shared only a single photograph of the prototype.
So, what do we know? Well, like the Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35 displayed at the same event outside Bothaville, the Triton Halo AT35 was developed in conjunction with Icelandic off-road specialist, Arctic Trucks. For the record, the company’s Russian division unwrapped an AT35 version of the L200 (another badge used on the Triton in some markets) back in 2021.
But back to the SA-spec model. The Japanese firm promises the production model will be an “extremely capable vehicle that is well engineered and backed by Mitsubishi’s factory warranty”.
Mitsubishi says the AT35 is “based on the flagship Triton double-cab 4×4”, so it will surely slot in well above the Triton Heritage (R749 990) and Triton Xtreme (R778 990). We’re guessing it will use the same 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine, which delivers 133 kW and 430 Nm to all 4 wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Mitsubishi SA reveals Arctic Trucks Triton Halo AT35 at Nampo
Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA) sprung a surprise on showgoers at the Nampo Harvest Day on Wednesday with the reveal of the Triton Halo AT35 prototype.
Developed in partnership with Arctic Trucks of Iceland - well known for their high-riding Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max models - the Halo AT35 is based on the range-topping Triton 4x4 double cab.
“Bakkies are an integral part of the farming community, and we believe that the unveiling of the Mitsubishi Triton Halo AT35 at Nampo Harvest Day is the perfect drawcard to our stand where we will be showcasing four brand new models,” said Jeffrey Allison, MMSA marketing head.
The Halo AT35 comes with a rugged 4x4 Iron Man Suspension system and rides 35mm higher than the regular Triton models. It also boasts a wider track thanks to 17-inch Arctic Truck alloy wheels fitted with BF Goodrich off-road tyres.
