Done using a Lucent LT WinModem on a R7 Weekend call special from Telkom. The line quality is exceptional because this is a farm line that only had 2 lines going to the exchange (800m away). The ISP was ABSA (free internet).
 
Is my maths just wonky or is that 1TB Received? surely that can't be right?
 
It says Bytes on the left - so that is 1,084,578,656 bytes or 1,059,158.84 kilobytes or 1,034.33 megabytes or 1.01 gigabytes

It was - for those days especially. I used to boast that in a month I do more data on my dial-up that ADSL users could do back then. So anyone else here that did more? Or am I the dial-up king? :cool:
 
I downloaded my very first Linux distro (Suse 9.2) using R7 call and ABSA as my ISP. I used a IDM to pause the download on the Monday morning and resumed it the following Friday evening.

I still have the 702 MB ISO

I also did 1GB a weekend on that R7 callmore. Use to run IPCop and set it to drop the line at 6:45 on Monday mornings. Those where the days :)
 
:D Same here - I did a site leech once with lots of 60~90MB movies on it. Free Download Manager had the queue and also a built in download manager, it would dial up at 7:05pm and drop at 6:55am. However this session captured above was manually disconnected after the screen shot was taken.
 
I managed to do a Surf Video over the weekend so did 713mb ( Billabong Odessy ) from Limewire. I know it was illegal back then but hey it resulted in me actually buying the DVD so I am now legal. This little copy later found its way to a few Varsity servers and a year later a friend of my Flat mate told me about this amazing surf video he obtained and guess what it was the exact copy, even had the same spelling error in it. Talk about 7 degrees of separation.

Not 1 year later 4 years later sorry

I was very happy to have such a nice phone line back then. Many of my friends that stayed in Stellenbosch could only manage 46.6kbps or at best 48kbps. By my calculations if you want to do 1GB on the weekend callmore plan you need a connection that will give you at least 4.85 kb/s so 48kbps will not cut it. If you want 1GB you need to hit 49.3kbps minimum.
 
Oh and wait for the knockout blow, I did my 713mb on a R7 weekender plan but I was 1 of 2 kids and a household with ONLY 1 phone line. SO yes I was very lucky to keep it connected and if I remember correctly I discounted after lunch on the Sunday.
 
That's pretty good - usually I had to share the connection with 4 other PCs, but on that weekend I was home alone.
5.2kb/s split 4 ways takes you back to the first internet in SA, accessed via a US Robotics 14.4 :p
 
Also used the R7 weekend call thingy, I remember a time or two on a Monday at school that I realized I forgot the dial-up on! Long ago..
 
Damn.... I had ISDN 128 way back then with the R7 weekend, did about 3GB a weekend on it if i recall correctly. Now that brings back memories :)
 
i left the dial up one weekend also at school the Monday morning but then clean forgot about it Monday when I got home and my mom asked me that night why is the phone line dead and I was like dam ok have no idea then pretended to fiddle with wires while I actually disconnected from the internet
 
On EDGE I did quite a bit when Vodacom had it ton trail and it was not billed. I'd say my max on EDGE was about 3GB (in one session).

Exactly the same for me. At that time 12 Gigs a month on ADSL cost a fortune... Hell, I only switched to ADSL in Dec '09 after the uncapped packages became available.

Just noticed the last post date. Hehehe.
