-= The MyBB Open Recipe Project =-

What? No android app? :wtf: :D

Only joking, might dig up my famous Polki Chili recipe to share ..

thanks... I need around 15 recipes to start off with, to have a functional program.
once that happens and people see how it works, it should go faster as more people get interested.

but for now, I just need some faith in you guys.... so those interested please help me and submit!
Recipes for Bread, Casserole, Pasta, Soup, Pastry, Cake, Tart, Cookie, Pizza, Salad, Sandwich, Sauce or anything else!

PS: I'm going to add a "Hall of Fame" Area in the program which will list the top contributors :o

perhaps a budget feature, say we have R50, what can we buy to make a delicious meal!

Total time too please. :)

I thought about this, but i'm not sure..

you see, the more data I "supply" in the app, the more data everyone must work out and type into the TXT recipe..
So, I was considering it but I don't think total time is important enough to require everyone to calculate this value on their recipes...

The same goes for price...it gets tough because you don't know what the person already has in his house and prices fluctuate, etc, etc... just too much data with too little benefit.

Great suggestions though guys, but just adds too much work for people submitting recipes... one of my goals is to make that part as easy as possible.
(Which currently is: Fill out name/title/date/etc, list ingredients, preparation + at least 1 picture)

Awesome awesome idea, 1 thing though, what if for example, 5 people have a recipe for Spaghetti Bolognaise, is it going to just display like "Arfs Spaghetti Bolognaise", "Keepers Spaghetti Bolognaise" etc? Maybe recipes need to be reviewed to make sure they are not duplicated

its going to be displayed something like this:

Spaghetti Bolognaise
by Keeper.............................17/09/2011

Spaghetti Bolognaise
by Blunomore.........................04/10/2011

Spaghetti Italiano
by dj....................................02/09/2011

Mark's Spaghetti
by MadMan88.........................22/09/2011

yeah, there may be duplicates, but that's okay I think.
Most will have their own "special formula" and ingredients that makes it unique.

Thanks for the ideas, questions and feedback though guys, I love it.

I will reveal (with a concept art) what my program will have that no other has (that I have seen or know of) soon... just need to sort out a few "issues" with making it all work like i want. :D
But i'll tell you all soon!

OK so I have worked on the Visuals a bit.

My idea is to have the program Render all the ingredients (that you guys have typed out) when viewing a recipe.
- You will be able to hover over each item and it will tell you what it is (crucial for liquids, spices and sauces) - All Ingredients will still be listed as well though.
- You can also click on "Canola oil" and see that its substitute is "Sunflower oil" for example (this is not a fact, i'm just illustrating)
- Other info could also be available for each item... like calories, its origin, or the best way to cook it, or how to serve it, or what it goes along with.... who knows what other info can be added.

Here is basically what it's going to look like:

I'm still planning a way which recipes can be uploaded, automatically downloaded, or shared.
I'm thinking a .rcp file format, which is actually a .zip file, that contains the txt file and the 3 or so jpg files.
All you do is add it to the "recipes" folder and voila, it's in the database.

Let me know if I've missed anything, or if you guys have some other ideas.

Does it have to include a pic?

I know you are against the group rating, but will some be listed as 'tested' at least? I don't know about others, but I always look for experience by others when making the dish for recipes I pick online. I don't trust that it'll be good from just one source.

Yes, you must take a pic of the final product. This is a requirement.
Pics of the Directions are optional, but encouraged.

I am not against group rating, it will just not be implemented for the time being.
if this project is successful I will definitely look into implementing group ratings for us.

I am also working on the mechanics of recipe sharing, uploading and downloading, and also a "automated recipe database update" which will grab the latest recipes submitted and download them for you.

Still no recipes submitted?

Ok, lets do it like this.
Only the guys posting recipes will be able to test/use the program while i'm coding it... sort of like a "early access beta program"
Everyone else will have to wait till a later date to use it.

It's really easy guys... write the ingredients, write the procedure, and take 1 pic of the final product. easy as that.

I just need 10-15 recipes in total, for testing. :o

You're the one who was so insistent on pics :p

I'm making a few things for a gathering on Monday. Will try to note what I put in them and do a write-up (it's easier for baked goods as I don't really measure for savoury...)

I did have one more question for you - what if it's someone else's recipe without any variation? Should it be attributed to the original source?

Well from what i've read, a list of ingredients can't be copyrighted.
The procedure itself can be though, so no straight out copying & pasting please.
BUT you absolutely may submit a recipe you have seen, if you write the procedure in your own words.

So to answer your question, Id prefer it if you didn't just copy/paste, but to write it down how you make it.
but i'll read more about adding other recipes without adapting the text, and then crediting the original author, and get back to you on that issue...

if it's your own words and procedure though, it's your recipe.

This is what the list of ingredients list is going to look like in the Program
