Ok, I see :D I have learned that frames and packets are used interchangeably to refer to the same thing and what I referred to as packets is actually the sliding window. Although I can't fathom how this can be when packets can be larger than frames and be broken up and sent in 2 or more frames. :confused: Just one of the design deficiencies I guess. Something both of us seem to have been confused about judging from this post. It would have been a lot simpler if they just called frames frames and sliding windows packets. :rolleyes:

Frames and packets are both terms used to describe data units, but at different layers.

The Sliding Window, although related, is a different concept all together.

LOL, no I was aware that the terms 'frame(s)' and 'packet(s)' are sometimes used interchangeably by some when referring to IP, what makes the difference is fragmentation of packets, and fragmentation does not only occur at the initial sender's end, but can happen at any of the intermediate senders [routers that relay packets], which depends on MTU settings...

The term 'Frame(s)' is further overloaded, e.g. what v3g posted - frame obviously has a slightly different meaning lower down in the network layers, and in that sense does not mean the same thing as an IP packet that may or may not have been fragmented into smaller parts...
