hi guys

i like to always keep the latest gpu in my pc, im just a sucker for eye candy and a high frame rate! :D

looking at the review below, this card is gonna be quick... but I cant help but wonder if its worth it for some people to go 4870x2 on this more mature board ??

http://www.techspot.com/review/198-ati-radeon-hd-5870-review/

maybe someone can also tell me why they never bothered to go the 4890x2 route? I have the single 4890 but I cant run crossfire, stupid nvidia chipset!

Cant wait to get my hands on one of these... time to sell my 4890, its still so new! lol

They never went 4890x2 because by that time they were already working on the 58xx series.

nobody wants a 48xx series if the 58xx series is out, even if it is still a pretty new card.

not sure what die size the 4890 has but the 58xx series has 45nm iirc - so yeah, why work on an old die size when they can go 45nm?

hi keeper

i read the 58xx has a 40nm and the 4890 has 55nm

that is QUITE the difference! :)

yeah, guess you have a good point... but speed for speed the 4870x2 will out pace the 5870

from what I can see anyway

hi keeper

Dont think so. Speed wise the 5870 is faster 2400mhz (4800 DDR) The 4870x2 clocks at 1800mhz (3600 DDR).

The only thing the 4870x2 will win is Memory bandwith. The 5870 will have a higher Pixel fill rate etc..

Edit:

5870 Pixel fill rate: 27200 MPixels/sec
4870x2 Pixel fill rate: 24000 MPixels/sec
5870 Texture fill rate: 68000 MTexels/sec
4870x2 Texture fill rate: 60000 MTexels/sec
5870 Mem Bandwith: 153.6 GB/sec
4870x2 Mem Bandwith: 230.4 GB/sec

Same story as, 4870 leaves the 3870x2 behind
The golden rule with few exceptions: 1 higher tiered card is better than 2 lower tiered cards.

yes, sorry - 40nm.

it's like somebody asking why they didn't make a new "SGS Golf 5 GTI Special Edition" when the Golf 6 is out....

it's just too old by then....

but lets hope they make a 5890x2 !
