I've noticed that the retail level PC display resolution seems to have stagnated at 1920 x 1080 for the last couple of years. The only advancements have been LED & 3D. I wonder if the new iPad screen resolution, 2,048 x 1,536, will usher in a higher standard? I really hope so, the other big tablet manufacturers are already moving this way so it would be sad if the computer display market got left behind.

+1 agree, i like how they went in and explained what they did :). Going to show my grandfather as he is quite shocked at advancement and is learning slowly. His only 85 :D.

The great thing about Apple is that they are not charging a premium for this premium tech.

When it comes to true LED TVs, one has to cough up about 10 times more than LED/CCFL-backlit LCDs (not to be confused with true LED).

I do indeed hope we'll start seeing cheaper high res PC monitors.

Now I can't wait for my dad to get an iPad 3 so that I can play around with it :D
I'd love to see it just for the display!

True. I wouldn't mind higher pixel density displays as long as gfx cards can keep up with the demands on displaying games in their full splendour :D

My 2x GTX460's are coping just fine for games (eg. BF3) at a 2560x1600 resolution, so I won't mind having that resolution on a 24" screen!

One thing that I don't want to do is to start downloading videos of 2,048 x 1,536 resolution :D

I would personally prefer a 27" with 2,048 x 1,536 or 2560x1600 anything smaller and it will be hard to see what's potting.

There have been some rumours that Apple might launch a 15" MacBook with a resolution 2880x1800 this year.

pity its a mac :P

i saw somewhere Samsung is launching a 27 inch with 2560x1440 res , think it had a nice price tag of 950 euro :P

and galaxy s3 suppose to have full hd screen on 4.8inch screen , where we have the same res on a 21.5-27inch :(

Apple's 27" iMacs has had that same resolution for more than 2 years. Their 27" Cinema display also has the same resolution for the insane price of almost R13000.

Yeah, that IPS display is incredible. Now that res should come to the entry level range.

The size of objects on the screen should be completely independent of the display's resolution.

But it isn't independent that's the problem. On Windows the objects don't scale independently of resolution, they're bound... so a 2560 24" screen suffers from being small to see. Anybody who's used a FHD 14" laptop knows how small the objects get. Apple sets a predefined number of resolutions and developers create their assets to suit those standards. That's also why most high definition Android phones (Galaxy Note, Nexus) also have massive screens; the stock Android icons just wouldn't scale down to 3.5" at the same PPI.

Isn't that what Windows 8 is addressing with Metro?

Yeah so the Windows items should scale independently but you're still going to have the same problem in applications. Windows has to cater for a huge number of different resolutions. It will always be somewhat of a problem if you don't strictly control your device specifications. That's also probably why Microsoft set the Winmo 7 resolution at 840x480 for so long.

As screen resolutions got higher I'd imagine the entry level screen size to increase as well. Won't really solve your high end notebook owners but then how does Apple accomplish this with their Macbook range
