So the godfather of set-top streaming boxes went back to the drawing board for the 2014 version of the Roku Streaming Stick, which abandons its reliance on MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) for standard-issue HDMI. It also comes prepackaged with a remote, though it lacks the motion control and headphone jack you get on more expensive models. For the internals, the company essentially crammed the Roku 1 into a dongle format -- and that includes its wallet-friendly $50 price point. While it's not quite as cheap as the Google's streaming stick, it does play host to plenty more content sources. Whether or not PBS, Showtime and over 1,000 niche channels of video programming is worth the extra $15 depends on you.

Other than form factor, the only difference between the Roku 1 and the Stick is that the latter ships with the latest versions of Roku's apps, though those will be coming to the full-sized box in the near future. That means you'll be able to cast photos and videos directly from your phone. Alongside the 2014 edition of the Streaming Stick, the company is launching a revamped mobile app. The most immediately obvious difference is the UI, which puts stark purple line drawings on black background. More importantly though, it puts the platform's universal search at your fingertips. So, rather than having to look at your TV to browse through the results, you can pick out the best place to watch Sherlock for free with just the tap of your touchscreen.

The new Roku Streaming Stick will be available in April either direct from the company's site or through the usual retailers (like Best Buy) for $50.:)

Was reading this just now on the web. Being a Roku fan I was initially excited. That excitement left when I saw it basically has Roku 1 internals. UI going to be very sluggish I would imagine.

I hope not. I'm thinking Roku knows that they have a big following because they keep things nice and smooth and hopefuly they worked on it in order to keep it that way.

Maybe the UI is a different one to what we have in our Roku's? When they talk about the UI in the article I'm guessing it's the mobile app UI? Not very clear.

Ya - hoping not too. I will try one though regardless. Just can't help myself.

I'll stick to my Roku 3. I also really don't like those dedicated channel buttons, rather give me 4 colored buttons which I can set myself.

My Apple TV is driving me nuts so I decided to check if Amazon ships the Roku Streaming Stick to South Africa and they do. :) Ordered one and it comes to R1100 with priority shipping. Going to use DS Video for now and Plex when they support my Synology NAS later in the year.

I been playing around with my newly acquired streaming stick and after doing the trial with unotelly am quite impressed. My problem is though that my wife had her mom bring me one as a bday present as a surprise when i had organised me an ATV... The menu is simple... and the channels takes a couple of more seconds to start up but the streaming is awesome. Playing movies off my home server has also been impressive and that is where it beats the ATV....

I did a blog on the Roku vs ATV here
