The next broadcasting generation

Throughout the world, other channels are catching on to Web TV.

Catching on?! Caught on. Years ago. SA is so far behind the curve it makes me want to cry :(

This is the best news ever. We will get VOD for free! Heeeeeehaaaaaa! Multichoice is king!

This will be the killer app for broadcasters. I believe Telkom Media will start off with such a service, so it won't be unique for long. Then pricing becomes a factor, yet again.

Then pricing becomes a factor, yet again.

Only two pricing models would work for me.
1 : Zero rental/subscription with cheap pay per view (like R5 for an episode)
2 : Flat rate rental/subscription where I can view as much as I like without paying extra for it.

From what I can see Multichoice won't offer either models.
Maybe Telkom Media who can deliver content via broadband only without the need for STBs will offer something more compelling than Multichoice's ripoff.

Oh yeah and then there's the DRM thing ... I'm not a Windows user so it better work with other OS's like Linux and OSX.

With the pathetic excuse for the software that runs on the PVR, I doubt that we'll get that level of user experience that say Tivo offers on the Dstv PVR. I don't know, but their developers and software engineers need a huge lesson on set-top box software design, user experience and development and what us as consumers really want.

VOD on the PVR is a step forward for Multichoice and from what I've heard, those that were fortunate enough to download the beta firmware for testing VOD, are very happy with it.

But if they want to venture into niche content and we all know that a lot of niche content today is user created content like video and audio podcasts, then they still have a long way to go.

I just hope that the HD PVR, which is rumoured to be due in June/July is going to live up to the hype.
