New Navara to lead Nissan's bakkie assault in SA
Nissan hopes to become 'South Africa’s most prolific pick-up brand' when its new flagship Navara arrives later in March.
Nissan said: "With the introduction of the all-new Navara, Nissan will offer a range of pick-ups that starts with the sub-one tonne NP200, includes a wide range of NP300 Hardbody models and the specialist overland Nissan Patrol Pick-up."
The Range
The new Navara will initially be available in three double cab models, with a 4x4 drivetrain and the choice of a six-speed manual or new seven-speed automatic gearbox. Over time, the range will expand to include mid- and entry-level models in 4x4 and 4x2 guise, with several additional models in the pipeline.
Nissan says the NP200 and NP300 Hardbody single-cab models will take care of commercial and small business owners and offer the choice of an 800kg payload for the NP200 and up to a 1359kg payload for the single-cab NP300. Both models are sold with a a six-year or 150 000km mechanical warranty as part of the Nissan Assured programme.

The soon-to-be-introduced Navara will top the range of Nissan bakkies and will expand over time to complement the NP200 and NP300 Hardbody in both the workhorse and leisure segments.
First to market will be three 4x4 models with the choice of SE and LE grade levels. All three derivatives will feature Nissan’s next-generation dual-turbo diesel engine that delivers 140kW/450Nm.
The first locally available double-cab variants of the new Navara will all feature a host of safety and luxury features, such as seven airbags, a touch screen infotainment system and Nissan’s new six-year or 150 000km mechanical warranty as part of the Nissan Assured programme.
Buyers who opt for the more luxurious LE grade will receive additional luxury and safety features such as Hill Start Assist (HSA), Hill Decent Control (HDC), a reverse camera and reverse sensors. An LE Automatic model is also available, which is equipped with a new seven-speed automatic gearbox.
In 2016, says Nissan, both the NP200 and NP300 Hardbody retained their respective titles as the most affordable sub-one tonne pick-up and one tonne pick-up to own, maintain and repair in South Africa.
Buyers of the Nissan Patrol, a popular choice amongst overland specialists and farmers, also have a wide range of options to choose from.

After a long wait, the new Nissan Navara (which we’ve already driven in both Morocco and Scotland) has finally launched in South Africa, and the local arm of the Japanese automaker has officially released pricing on its website.
The new bakkie will initially be available in three double-cab variants only (with the choice of SE and LE trim levels), all powered by the new, bi-turbo 2,3-litre turbodiesel engine linked to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission, and all boasting all-wheel drive.
At a later stage, Nissan SA promises that its Navara range will be expanded to include mid- and entry-level models in 4×4 and 4×2 guise, with “several additional models in the pipeline”. The new engine makes 140 kW and 450 N.m, with the latter on tap just 1 500 r/min.
So, to pricing. First up (for now, at least) is the 2,3D SE 4×4 model in manual, which comes in at R514 900. Upping the trim level to LE pushes the price to R565 900, while the flagship 2,3D LE 4×4 fitted with the new self-shifting gearbox is priced at R584 900.
Nissan claims a combined fuel economy figure of 6,5 L/100 km for the manual models, and 7,0 L/100 km for the automatic. All three boast a braked towing capacity of 3 500 kg.
All three also feature seven airbags and a touchscreen infotainment system (with navigation) as standard, as well as Nissan’s new multi-link rear suspension set-up. A six-year or 150 000 km mechanical warranty is also included, along with a three-year or 90 000 km service plan (with intervals of 15 000 km). Nine exterior colours will be on offer.
Buyers who opt for the LE grade will gain features such as hill start assist, hill descent control, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, push-button start, roof rails and a reversing camera (with sensors).

Nissan says it has also launched the “most comprehensive list of accessories yet” for one of its products. The range of accessories includes cosmetic additions such as headlamp and rear light guards, a range of decal kits, aluminium or moulded scuff plates and a choice of two different sports bars and nudge bars.
The accessories list also includes more off-road specific additions, such as a heavy duty off-road suspension upgrade kit and custom black XD alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres. Other additions include a tow bar, roof rails of different designs, different tonneau covers options and seat cover sets.

Whereas there has been a lot of attention on the arrival of the V6-engined facelifted Volkswagen Amarok and the luxurious Mercedes-Benz X-Class in the near future, the most pertinent development in terms of the current South African double-cab market is undoubtedly the arrival of the new Navara, which is locally produced at Nissan’s plant in Rosslyn.
From a technological point of view, the Navara takes a bold step forward for the leisure double-cab market through the adoption of a 5-link coil rear suspension (as opposed to traditional leaf springs) in conjunction with an independent double wishbone front setup, which sets the newcomer up with the potential to set a new standard for ride comfort in its segment.
Power comes courtesy of a 2.3-litre turbodiesel engine that produces 140 kW and 450 N.m and is mated with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmission. All derivatives have a payload of 1 tonne, a 750 kg unbraked towing capacity and can pull braked trailers of up to 3 500 kg.

New Navara is finally in here: SA details
Nissan’s long-awaited Navara has finally gone on sale in South Africa and although the initial range is rather limited, it does appear to offer good value lower in the range. Only three 4x4 double cabs are available for now, priced between R514 900 and R597 900 and all are powered by Nissan’s new twin-turbo 2.3-litre turbodiesel.
The sophisticated new engine is said to be 19 percent more fuel efficient than its predecessor and it’s also at the sharp end of the game in output terms, with 140kW available at 3750rpm and 450Nm from 1500rpm, and it has a braked towing capacity of 3500kg. For comparison sake, the Toyota Hilux GD-6 engine is good for 130kW and 450Nm, while the Ford Ranger 3.2 five-cylinder unit is rated at 147kW and 470Nm.
This Navara is practically all-new from the ground up and Nissan has managed to shave up to 176kg off the kerb weight, but the big news is its coil-sprung five-link rear suspension system, which smoothes out the ride quality. In fact this is the first vehicle in its class to ditch the leaf springs, that is if you exclude the rather obscure Ssangyong Actyon Sports, which was more of a chopped SUV than a dedicated bakkie.
The Navara is still built on a traditional ladder frame chassis and boasts a 67mm longer and 18mm deeper load bay with a 1061 litre capacity and a payload of up to 1002kg depending on model. All the hard-core off-roading ingredients are still in place. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic gearbox, both featuring a mechanical transfer case with low-range gearing, controlled via a rotary dial in the cabin. Nissan has also thrown in a host of electronic off-road aids, including the Active Brake Limited Slip Differential system, which manages the power distribution front-to-back, left-to-right.
On the subject of off-roading, the Navara also has 229mm of ground clearance and improved approach, ramp-over and departure angles of 33.0, 25.2 and 27.9 degrees respectively.
The more spacious cabin is fitted with what Nissan calls Spinal Support front seats and equipment levels are generous across the board. A new touch-screen navigation system with 3D mapping and live traffic updates is standard, as is Bluetooth audio streaming, steering-mounted controls, automatic headlights, cruise control and seven airbags, including one for the driver’s knee.
The range-topping LE grade adds dual zone automatic climate control and a keyless entry and ignition system with start button. Those buying the LE can also get leather seats for an additional R13 000, while all versions can be personalised with a wide range of Nissan-approved dealer-fitted accessories, including a heady-duty off-road suspension kit.

Nissan’s long-awaited Navara has finally gone on sale in South Africa and although the initial range is rather limited, it does appear to offer good value lower in the range. Only three 4x4 double cabs are available for now, priced between R514 900 and R597 900 and all are powered by Nissan’s new twin-turbo 2.3-litre turbodiesel.
The sophisticated new engine is said to be 19 percent more fuel efficient than its predecessor and it’s also at the sharp end of the game in output terms, with 140kW available at 3750rpm and 450Nm from 1500rpm, and it has a braked towing capacity of 3500kg. For comparison sake, the Toyota Hilux GD-6 engine is good for 130kW and 450Nm, while the Ford Ranger 3.2 five-cylinder unit is rated at 147kW and 470Nm.
This Navara is practically all-new from the ground up and Nissan has managed to shave up to 176kg off the kerb weight, but the big news is its coil-sprung five-link rear suspension system, which smoothes out the ride quality. In fact this is the first vehicle in its class to ditch the leaf springs, that is if you exclude the rather obscure Ssangyong Actyon Sports, which was more of a chopped SUV than a dedicated bakkie.
The Navara is still built on a traditional ladder frame chassis and boasts a 67mm longer and 18mm deeper load bay with a 1061 litre capacity and a payload of up to 1002kg depending on model. All the hard-core off-roading ingredients are still in place. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic gearbox, both featuring a mechanical transfer case with low-range gearing, controlled via a rotary dial in the cabin. Nissan has also thrown in a host of electronic off-road aids, including the Active Brake Limited Slip Differential system, which manages the power distribution front-to-back, left-to-right.
On the subject of off-roading, the Navara also has 229mm of ground clearance and improved approach, ramp-over and departure angles of 33.0, 25.2 and 27.9 degrees respectively.
The more spacious cabin is fitted with what Nissan calls Spinal Support front seats and equipment levels are generous across the board. A new touch-screen navigation system with 3D mapping and live traffic updates is standard, as is Bluetooth audio streaming, steering-mounted controls, automatic headlights, cruise control and seven airbags, including one for the driver’s knee.
The range-topping LE grade adds dual zone automatic climate control and a keyless entry and ignition system with start button. Those buying the LE can also get leather seats for an additional R13 000, while all versions can be personalised with a wide range of Nissan-approved dealer-fitted accessories, including a heady-duty off-road suspension kit.
