State has no case, says man accused of arranging wife's murder

Johannesburg - George Barkhuizen, who is accused of having his wife murdered for insurance money, has submitted that the State has no case against him and he should not have to testify to prove his innocence.

Barkhuizen allegedly ordered a hit on his wife, Odette, after taking out three separate life insurance policies and forging her signature to do so.

She was found shot dead near her offices in Moffat View near Johannesburg in June 2015 in what police initially believed was another bungled hijacking.

Barkhuizen’s marathon trial continued this week at the Joburg High Court, with his defence launching a Section 174 application to have presiding Judge Ramarumo Monama discharge the criminal case against him.

Alleged wife killer George Barkhuizen awaits his fate

The State wants the court to find murder-accused George Barkhuizen guilty merely on inference that he lied to police about his exact whereabouts when his wife was shot dead in the driveway.

This was the argument of Sita Kolbe SC, Barkhuizen's lawyer, at the South Gauteng High Court on Thursday during her closing arguments in the marathon trial.

Kolbe sought to convince the court that the state failed dismally to prove the charges against Barkhuizen.

Businessman Barkhuizen is accused of killing his wife Odette for insurance payouts in 2015.

She was shot as she drove out of Oakdene business premises.



Barkhuizen also faces counts of fraud, illegal possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The fraud allegations were that he took out three separate life insurance policies worth R7.5m on behalf of Odette. The State alleged that he forged her signature and paid premiums.

Barkhuizen pleaded not guilty to all the charges, leaving the State to prove beyond reasonable doubt that he was guilty.

The State relied on circumstantial evidence to prove its case, as Barkhuizen was not caught red-handed committing the alleged crime and closed its case weeks ago.

Individually he received 25 years for murder, 15 years for fraud, six years for unlawful possession of a firearm and two years for the unlawful possession of ammunition, which will run concurrently.

GEORGE Barkhuizen, who murdered his wife Odette on June 11, 2015, has been found guilty and has been sentenced to effective life imprisonment.

Odette (43) was brutally gunned down and killed at her business premises in Oakdene, leaving behind her estranged husband George, her two sons Warwick and Wade, and parents Stan and Pam Immelman.
