Woman shot dead in Oakdene hijacking

The police and Netcare 911 responded to a call that a woman had been shot on High Street. The woman was found dead on the scene and could not be helped by paramedics.

“The deceased was getting into her car. People who work at the business heard a gunshot, then saw a black male who was wearing a tracksuit top and a hood standing at the deceased’s car,” said police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Lorraine van Emmerik.

“The suspect shot another shot killing the lady standing at the car once on the head and once on the chest. The suspect fled with the car. At this point a murder and hijacking case has been opened,” she said.

Odette is remembered after being killed

Five days after being shot dead at her business premises in Middle Road, Oakdene, family and friends gathered on Tuesday June 16 to remember Odette Barkhuizen, 43 years old, at the place where she died.

OAKDENE – Odette was shot twice and died on the scene on Thursday June 11. Her vehicle was stolen but found a few hours later not far from where she was murdered.

About 70 mourners gathered to pay their respects, lay flowers, light candles and set free balloons in remembrance of her life.

“Odette was a great humanitarian and someone who didn’t need praise or acknowledgement for the good deeds she did,” said lifelong friend Lindy Nieuwenhuizen....

‘Hijacking was a hit on mom’

Johannesburg - When Odette Barkhuizen was murdered in June, police thought it was a hijacking, but now investigations have revealed she was the target of a calculated murder plot.

And after weeks of private detective and police investigations, sources close to the case have revealed her husband has been named as a suspect in the murder.

On June 11, the 43-year-old mother-of-two was shot in the head and the chest when she stepped out of her car on a routine trip to her Oakdene, Joburg, office, where she worked with her husband.

The hooded man who killed her then drove off in her Kia SUV, which was found two streets away the next day.

Even though he’s considered a suspect by investigators, George, Barkhuizen’s estranged husband, has been conducting his own probe into the brutal killing...

Man held for wife’s ‘hijack’ murder

Johannesburg - George Barkhuizen has been arrested in connection with the murder of his wife.

The arrest came after The Star reported that the 47-year-old was the suspect in the murder of his wife Odette.

Odette was murdered on June 11 on a routine trip to her Oakdene, Joburg, office, where she worked with her husband.

When the 43-year-old mother-of-two stepped out of her car, she was shot in the head and chest by a hooded figure who fled with her vehicle and dumped it two blocks away.

Police initially thought it was a hijacking, but investigations later revealed she was the target of an alleged murder plot.

Although the news of an arrest should have sat well with Odette’s family, her mother, Pam Immelman, said George was putting them through a different kind of hell.

Immelman burst into tears while telling The Star how George has kept her 23-year-old physically disabled grandchild from them for two months and continues to keep his location secret, even after his arrest.

‘Hubby bought killing kit’

Johannesburg - Almost two months before the murder of his wife, George Barkhuizen allegedly took out insurance policies worth R7 million under her name, The Star can reveal.

He also allegedly forged the applications and a new copy of her will.

Barkhuizen’s alleged plot took place just 50 days before Odette Barkhuizen was shot and killed during what had appeared to have been a staged hijacking at the time.

The 43-year-old mother-of-two was shot at point-blank range – once in the chest and once in the head – on June 1 as she stepped out of her car while on a routine trip to her Oakdene, Joburg, office, where she worked with George.

Before her murder, he had bought latex gloves, a plastic poncho, a grey conti suit and black boots in his size in what could have been an attempt to conceal the alleged crime.

Though the pair were estranged and slept in separate bedrooms, they lived and worked together. Odette had asked for a divorce.

Dad researched on internet how to kill mom, says son

Johannesburg - A day before his mother was shot dead, a 17-year-old boy allegedly caught his father researching how to shoot someone on the internet, Rapport newspaper reported on Sunday.

"He was a bad father and a bad husband," Wade Barkhuizen told the Afrikaans Sunday paper in an exclusive interview.

He said he hoped his father remained behind bars because he feared for his own life.

EWN reported earlier this week that George Barkhuizen was arrested for the killing of his wife, Odette, who was shot dead in front of her office in Oakdene in June.

Pam Immelman, Odette's mother, told the talk radio station the family was traumatised.

"It's just the beginning of a lot of things to come; everything is not going to be plain sailing."

The Star newspaper reported that police initially thought she was killed in a hijacking but after weeks of private and police investigations, the husband was fingered as the prime suspect.

Private investigator

The 43-year-old mother was shot in the head and chest on June 11.

iAfrica.com quoted George Barkhuizen in July as saying he himself had hired a private investigator to probe Odette's killing.

But Rapport newspaper said both Wade Barkhuizen - his youngest son - and Melissa Naidu, a director of the private detective agency Paul O'Sullivan and Associates, suspected her killing was not a hijacking.

Wade said his father was very abusive and his mom had been too scared for years to leave, fearing for her sons' safety. She was shot dead after deciding to divorce him.

"My mom was everything to us."

George Barkhuizen had taken out three life policies on Odtte's life, worth R7.7m, shortly before her death, according to Rapport newspaper.

A day before her murder, Wade allegedly saw his father had done research on the internet on how to shoot someone. According to Wade, when he asked him what he was doing, he replied: "I am tired of backstabbing."

George Barkhuizen is expected to appear in court again on Wednesday for a bail application.

Signature on will forged - handwriting expert in Barkhuizen murder trial

Johannesburg – An independent handwriting expert on Tuesday testified that the signature of a woman alleged to have been murdered by her husband was forged in her last will and testament.

Johannes Hattingh, a retired forgery expert, was testifying in the South Gauteng High Court in the case of businessman George Barkhuizen, who is on trial for allegedly killing his wife, Odette.

Hattingh told the court that he compared a sample of Odette's signature to that on a copy of her will and found that it was "forged".

Hattingh also found that "signatures from the policy documents in comparison to the will were totally different".

Barkhuizen is facing charges of murder, fraud, unlawful possession of a firearm and the unlawful possession of ammunition.

In June 2011, Odette, who was 43-years-old, was shot in the head and chest, in what was then thought to have been a hijacking.

R7.5m insurance

However, Barkhuizen reportedly became the prime suspect later in the case.

During the bail application at the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court in September 2015, the court heard that Barkhuizen allegedly took out insurance worth R7.5m on his wife weeks before she was gunned down.

The court also heard that Barkhuizen allegedly sent the insurer an email asking if they would pay out if his wife died in a hijacking.

News24 previously reported that on the day that the insurance was taken up, Barkhuizen was alleged to have forged Odette's will to reflect that he was the sole beneficiary of her entire estate.

The couple's marriage was also on the rocks, the court heard.

One of the couple's sons had reportedly informed the police that his parents were sleeping in separate bedrooms and his mother had indicated that she wanted to file for a divorce.

A long-standing friend of Barkhuizen, Ernest Goose, disputed this in court. He said the couple had their fair share of problems but they were "okay".

Document witnessed a month later

"According to me, it (the relationship) was okay. I did not see any marital issues. Like every marriage, they had good and bad times," said Goose.

Goose, who is the godfather of one of Barkhuizen's sons, told the court that in May 2015 Barkhuizen approached him asking him to be a witness on his late wife's will.

"He presented a document and then I witnessed," said Goose.

He said he did not find it strange that Barkhuizen asked him to witness a document which was dated April 24, 2015, a month later.

Shortly after he signed Ordette's will, Barkhuizen then presented Goose with his own will, which Goose also witnessed.

Goose said after Odette's death, he received a phone call from Barkhuizen informing him that the police would be contacting him.

He said that at no stage did Barkhuizen coerce him into falsifying or withholding information.

The matter continues on Wednesday.

Man accused of ordering hit on wife may go free

Pretoria - Alleged wife killer George Barkhuizen could walk away from the Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg, a free man next week.
Barkhuizen stands accused of ordering a hit on his wife Odette after taking out three separate life insurance policies and allegedly forging her signature to do so.

Odette Barkhuizen was found shot dead near her offices in Moffatview in June 2015 in what police believed was a bungled hijacking.

However, after months of investigation, the police charged her husband with the killing. Barkhuizen’s trial began this year, with the State alleging the killing was planned after he had forged a new will and testament for his wife, and took out a set of life insurance policies worth R7.5 million from three separate insurance companies.

According to the State’s indictment, the couple had been estranged for some time, and Odette had recently told her husband she wanted a divorce.

The life policies and new will, created just two months before Odette’s death, were allegedly constructed without her knowledge. The State rested its case earlier this month.

But this week, George looks set to embark on a Section 174 application, which will ask the court to discharge his case because he and his legal team will claim the State’s case has no chance of success. If the application succeeds, the defence will not have to argue a case.

Barkhuizen confirmed this on his Facebook wall after proceedings earlier this month. He has used the same social media page vehemently denying the State’s allegations since the trial’s inception.

His profile picture for his Facebook page is an indication of his desire to prove his innocence. “Look deep into my eyes and realise that I will never back down,” is written on the image of a snarling wolf.
