Yes, 40W seems to be about right for Cape Town.

I have tried without a bulb in winter, but even with the fan at full blast (I have a custom box with a voltage controlled PC fan) the white stuff tends to develop without the additional bit of warmth to dry even with lots of vinegar which can spoil the taste..

If you find some of the incandescent types, buy a few and store them, they are becoming harder to find these days. The halogens put out reasonable heat, but they tend to blow pretty quickly I have found.
 
I went to 3 different shops today looking for a 60w incandescent and did not find anything. Sigh... Must keep looking.

No worries - I've used those bulbs, mostly in the summer. They're not bad but if you're interested you can get the 40w candles at PnP Bay West.

The Chinese shop at hunters sell 100w incandescent bit on the hot side tho
 
Finally after going to another 5 shops, some corner shop had 60w incandescents. Bought 2 to have one as a spare but when I got home one of them blew as soon as I turned it on :mad: will have to take it back and get it replaced tomorrow.

Is there any difference between the incandescents and the halogen filament bulbs with regards to biltong making?

Is it just the camera angle or is that a smaller than normal box… by normal I'm referring to the mellerware ones.

The halogen bulbs are more efficient which means less heat is generated… I think?

Yea, I think the radiant heat and spectrum the lights give off are somewhat different

You mean less power consumed
ie less watts for the amount of heat equivalent to its counters parts eg. 40w halogen heat maybe equivalent to heat of a normal 60w bulb
