Hi All

I will use my experience to help others with their blood pressure.

Keep in mind that high, untreated BP may lead to a myriad of diseases, such as kidney failure, blindness, diabetes etc. So...

The aim is to get your blood pressure down below 140/90. In order to do so, you will need to purchase a portable blood pressure monitor.

Dischem stock these. There are also other health shops which also may stock portable BP monitors.

Something like this :

bp.jpg

Remember, you cannot say what your BP is like without a machine. In my case, I feel fine even though my BP might be 160/110 or something like that above 140/90. Hence the need for a BP monitor.

If you think these are too expensive, consider the alternative of being on dialysis, or having to take insulin for diabetes, or worse still, being in hospital (or, worse still, dead) after a ruptured vein....

Now, you will need to see a doctor. Your doctor will most probably prescribe you some medicine in order to keep your BP down. This helps a lot, as it will also help you to relax, knowing that your BP is within a safe range.

Don't overdo it on the medication though. If you notice that your BP is well below 110/65, stop taking the BP pills and notify your doctor immediately. Reason why - you may pass out at an inconvenient time without anybody close nearby who'll be able to help and assist you.

Once you got your BP in the safe window between 110/65 and 140/90 you can celebrate a bit :) (but don't overdo that either :p)

In my case, the culprit was red meat, and food/products with a high salt content. Cutting out most of that, and eating more vegetables/fruit and other food with less salt in, helped a lot.

Also, keep in mind that most takeaways is a major contributor to high BP due to the high oil/fat and salt in their product(s). Some add certain preservatives/flavour enhancers to the mix, which also bump the pressure up.

Before going to bed, I drink a glass of a half-teaspoon of cayenne pepper mixed with water. This helps cleaning out the veins, and helps with keeping the blood pressure down.

Celery helps with relaxing the muscles of the heart.

Grapefruit also help with BP. Some BP medicine get a boost should you eat grapefruit whilst on BP medication, check with your doctor, or check on the medication/information pamphlet usually added to the medicine.

Keep in mind that automated blood pressure monitors can be wildly inaccurate. Take your machine with you to the doctor and make sure you get the same reading from both.

Mine is a bit high, I have been taking Co-Tareg 80 tablets (one a day) for a couple of years now.
I'm slowly losing weight though, so I am hoping it will calm down.

Yep, weight's also a problem. Mine's also coming down slowly. Yay for a flat stomach.

I was diagnosed with High Blood pressure about 2 yrs ago. I am on:prexum plus & Norvasc .
May 03 Blood pressure reading = 113/71

I started going to the gym more frequently after being diagnosed. I try at least to get a reading at the gym (tracker machine) x2 a week & so far the reading has been constant.

Only problem is that I can only take a printout of the readings to the Dr when I see her and not the machine, but readings seems to be very close.:)

Eating grapefruit + meds is generally a bad idea. It interacts with many types of meds.

Maybe its beneficial in this case, but I'd rather not try it.

When using it often enough you can kinda predict what your blood pressure is by the way you feel. Not accurate, but in the ballpark. I always guess my bp before a checkup and I get pretty close :p

Currently using Ziak tabs. They also help to get your heart rate down if it is regularly too high.

One thing that helped me to reduce my blood pressure was to cut down on caffeine. And I love coffee :(

I too scared to be tested. Don't want to get Statins which I've been brainwashed into believing these are worsey.Once apon a time many moons ago a Doctor said Nescafe was responsible for high BP. But it wakes me up. Can't do without.

Statins are for cholesterol not BP

Exercise is great for reducing mildly elevated BP.

High blood pressure
Professor Peter Sever at Imperial College, London, leader of the British arm of a huge Anglo-Scandinavian study, looked at 9,000 patients with hypertension. The study was halted two years early because the statin had such a dramatic effect on cutting the risk that the researchers decided it wasn't fair for half the group to be taking a placebo!

Professor Sever commented: "There are eight million people with high blood pressure in Britain. If our results are correct, and I know no reason why they should not be, we could be potentially preventing 20,000 to 30,000 strokes and heart attacks a year if they were all taking statins."

a client of mine went the no carbs, high proteins and fats route supplemented with omega 3's, he started passing out and eventually was rushed to hospital, his BP had dropped dramatically and was being further suppressed by his BP medication, he is now off his meds all together, he's also lost over 20kg's in the last 6 months

statins ARE for high cholesterol and NOT for BP control. read the whole first article you quoted. high cholesterol and high BP both increase your risk for heart attacks and strokes. and they usually go hand in hand - but statins are not used for high blood pressure. any lowering effect on the blood pressure will be very little as noted in the last link (a mean reduction 2mmHg is not much at all), and not standard treatment for high blood pressure.
