From ROS6 you have to select development, upgrade to ROS7 then its the stable version. Hope that makes sense

There is some "magic" that happens in the background when you upgrade, mainly with regards to routing config.

So if you have a compact export from ROS6 and you try restore to ROS7, it could have issues.

Again my home router went fine and been on ROS7 for some time, but its very simplistic. Work we still run ROS6

Have a compact export somewhere from ROS6 and can do a code compare, but again my home needs are very simple so may not be much help. Been on ROS7 for a while already

Yeah it does... sadly it messed up my config and I had to downgrade.
My home mesh is used to test some services, so we will have to upgrade to OS 7.1 and then reconfig the mesh from the ground up.

For me not really, and just testing but I want to try their containers when its stable. For NordVPN you could use wireguard, but that you would have to reconfigure

To be clear your existing setup should work as is. What I mean is the potential benefit is changing the existing VPN to wireguard once converted

WireGuard seems pretty interesting. If I understand it correctly it's a new type of VPN? So I won't have to bother with L2TP to VPN back home into my network?

Installed ROS 7.1 on my RB2011 (it's in "testing"). Setup WireGuard VPN server, connecting fine from my Android phone and macOS laptop. Not exactly a "simple" setup but certainly a lot simpler than the nightmare that is L2TP.

Webfig is a bit buggy on this release, after a few mins idle the links don't work and you need to reload the page and log in again; seems too short for a session timeout and on the previous OS it would redirect to a login if you tried to navigate after a timeout.

Haven't really noticed anything else.

For setting up wireguard I used this video as a guide

It didn't work following his guide, needed to do the following in addition to the steps in the video

1. IP > Firewall > Filter Rules : drag the wireguard rule he mentions up above the defconf blocks
2. IP > Firewall > Filter Rules : add a new rule Chain = Forward, In Interface = wireguard, Action = Accept
3. Interface > Interface List : add wireguard to "LAN" (so my rules for LAN based traffic applied to clients)

As an alternative to the above, you should also be able to power the with POE if you wanted to - however it will probably then be limited to 100Mbit (Not an issue if the Fibre is <= 100Mbit).

You'd plug in the ONT LAN cable into the "LAN" port of the UPS and plug the "POE" port from the UPS into the HAP Router, then the router can be as far away as the LAN cable is long.

It wastes a port but if you arent using all 5 who cares. If thats your WAN port just change the PPPoE to the next Ethernet and you done.

Thanks, this may help, but can you explain it a bit more? I'm not too clued up on this stuff.

I'm currently on 50/50 so the speed shouldn't be an issue.

What's the reason for not wanting to run the ONT through it?

EDIT: Is it to bypass the speed restriction? In RanzB's case it won't make a difference

Just for the couple ms of latency going through the UPS bridge opposed to direct to the ONT. However @RanzB if you dont know how to move the PPPoE to another port, or DHCP whatever you are using, then just do what Cactus said as then you make no changes on the router.

There should be hardly any latency increase, but I get why you suggested this. I did something similar but used connectors I had open to not waste a port. Nothing beats a homemade LAN connector for DC power

(The Mikrotik needs 24v and the only output port that supplies 24v on my mini ups is POE)

I did something like this below for my Unify AP, but I added a dc jack to power it from, so LAN -> DC Jack
