I probably should have qualified that a bit better, for home wireless its fine.
I have 2 Unifi AP lite's in my house, many people also told me about how limited they are for throughput etc etc but its never negatively affected me.
Heck your wifi network at home is almost always going to have more bandwidth than your internet connection so a slight performance loss wont be noticeable.
 
Are there any Mikrotik specialists on this thread that can assist with troubleshooting on a somewhat complex setup? A friend needs help with his network, he has multiple VLAN's and is having trouble with the internet connection.

Every time I set up a new mikrotik I generally also have a pi-hole on the network or just a local DNS server but then I always find myself wasting time googling for the correct firewall rules to route the dns traffic to the raspberry pi.
So I decided to bookmark it by writing it down https://erikthiart.com/blog/redirect-all-dns-traffic-on-port-53-to-pihole.php I hope this helps you guys 2 years from now when Eskom breaks your router and you forgot to make a backup script and now have to setup your pi hole and mikrotik instance again after 5 years of not touching it. (you know the mikrotik life -- drain your soul for 3 days and then you never touch that thing again, ever.)

Okay - So RB4011 arrived today - first order of business is to test it by setting it up with my fibre connection. Maar my vok marelize...took me a while to get it setup. gave up then switch to my fibre wireless directly. then suddenly it started working...

eish this is gonna give me a paar kopseer until i understand it.

Calling all network engineers, gurus, self taught maestros...need some help.

So after some considerable time i have setup my RB4011 to work with my fibre connection. I am new to mikrotik and not experienced in networking concepts (i know how to fiddle, follow instructions etc).

So i have a vumareach (VR) fibre connection which comes with an all in one cheapo ONT/Router. Problem is, this ONT/router is completely locked down - no access to any settings whatsoever and vuma have no intent on assisting.

So no bridge mode, no ip passthrough, no DMZ functions. you cant even switch off the wifi, DHCP, etc. All they have is a bespoke portal to change your wifi password. (why they do this and how crappy it is, is for another discussion :))

The router sits on the 192.168.18.x range with the router IP on 192.168.18.1.

I have setup my router from port 1 of the VR router to the mikrotik and setup a basic connection using quickset. the problem i have is this causes double NAT.

is there any way to get around this? (besides getting another ISP/internet service :) - no option)

You will need to speak to Vumatel.
That device is capable of bridge mode (I actually just grabbed one to test it out - but a team member has told me it is capable).

No joy from ISP or VUMA - they gave customers some technical explanation of why they cannot (and will not assist) - which is not what we wanna hear, but that is for another discussion.

So to confirm there is not way of getting around this with the mikrotik?

afrihost. This has been requested/escalated but no luck. apparently the VR is a different business model. all the ISPs on VR say the same thing really - and pushes it to Vuma - who come up with the same response.

my concerns are more around potential gaming, remote access, port forwarding issues. i have plans to access my NVR, play games, setup remote access etc.
 
well you can test it with teh RB4011 and see if you do have remote access or not. If you do then you are fine.
Never seen double NAT cause issues with gaming
 
Afaik,is what it is,you could get a VPN tunnel going to get yourself a reachable public IP,but VR have the device itself pretty locked down
