The official Mikrotik router thread

So I killed my access to the internet on my AX 2 - Secure You Router - MikroTik Wiki - basically following this - reset to default configuration, and I am back on the internet. What is likely to have killed my internet in this set of instructions. I look at it, and see nothing that is likely to break my system.

Wondering if I don't have a intermittent network cable. [ sigh ] Just a little Bee, running around the back of my head.

Me thinks, after Church tomorrow morning, off to Incredible Connection to buy a new Cat 6 cable.
 
Anyone setup ControlD on a MikroTik?

Would appreciate a config, please, otherwise, I am going to fly blind and see what I break along the way.

Can find examples for ZeroTier and CloudFlare.
 
Okay, my HAP Lite, is giving me kernel error and out of memory errors.

All I have on it is a quick setup, and my rules to connect to ControlD, all that I want is that my Fire TV stick must go via it so that I can use iPlayer, ITVX etc.

It has been suggested that I netinstall a new version of ROS onto it.

Currently it has 7.10, there any real benefit to putting 6.49 onto it instead?

Considering that it must do DoH.
 
6.49 would use less space by only installing essential individual packages. There should also be a performance improvement.
DoH is supported since 6.47
Only major missing element would be wireguard.

Forced to downgraded 2x RB750's as they became unusably slow with v7
 
I would imagine the overhead of DoH compared to normal dns is quite a bit, as each concurrent query would have to do the SSL handshake etc which would use up RAM

Well, when it is running, it has minimum of 7.2 MB RAM free, and cpu never goes higher than 20%

That is when it is running, then it has a kernel error, then thereafter out of memory error. So I surmise the kernel error causes the out of memory issue.

I watched the memory and CPU usage for an hour and a half last night, in Winbox.

Directly connect to eth1
Set a static ip on the PC
In netinstall, go to "net booting" set a different client ip on the same subnet as the PC
Power up the hap lite then holding the reset button in for 15 secs until usr led is off
After a few seconds the hap should appear in the routers/drives list

Also check Windows or av firewall not the problem

Done that, on both my laptops, WIN10 and WIN11, will try again, and see what gives, will pay attention to the 15 seconds.

Have watched that video, and a few others, device is just not showing in Netinstall to install to.

Just not seeing what the issue is, maybe I am trying too hard.

There not a way to do a netinstall over a live network? Yes I understand that there is a very real issue, of netinstalling the wrong device, but heck - this is defeating me and I don't know why.
 
The button pressing needs to happen during boot:
Regardless of the above option used, the system will load the backup RouterBOOT loader if the button is pressed before power is applied to the device. Useful for RouterBOOT debugging and recovery.

Have done with the device still on the network with mixed results. Using a direct connection is the recommended method.

Edit:
You can also force ethernet booting by logging into the hap and setting

/system routerboard settings set boot-device=try-ethernet-once-then-nand
or

/system routerboard settings set boot-device=ethernet

I press the button, then push the power connector in?

Ethernet booting looks to be a saner method, will look at that when I get home.

Have no immediate need for the HaP Lite to work, but don't particularly want to just toss it either.
 
First power then the button - you need to interrupt the boot sequence. If the button is held before powerup then it just loads the backup boot loader and won't ethernet boot.
