The Official RaspberryPi Thread

I collected my new RaspPi today. It took Electrocomp just 20 days from the time of the order (August 22)! I wish I didn't order the others from RS in July. I will probably get them in December.:sick:

Don't install openelec on it, rather do Raspbmc. You download the installer, run setup (windows machine with SD card reader), have it write the installer image to the card, then boot up your PI with the card in it and make yourself a coffee while it downloads XBMC and installs.

I got mine up and running yesterday with Raspbmc.
It wasn't hassle free, despite how simple it was. I didn't really get any info off the FAQ/forums and it needs just a bit more of a step by step installation guide.

Things I battled with.
*Can you boot it up first time with our without a TV screen? I don't have a connection near a screen, so had to move one. When I eventually did this, there was actually no input required from the keyboard. i could have just left it without a monitor(because it installed no problems).

*screen was black/white only, i'm using a 20year old CRT Philips TV only have composite and S-Video inputs. Limited screen options to adjust from within XBMC. Took me a while to work out that the only way to do this was through the config file. I think it is NTSC standard...so I had to convert to PAL.Thought this was quite a basic issue.

Video mode options

sdtv_mode defines the TV standard for composite output (default=0)
sdtv_mode=0 Normal NTSC
sdtv_mode=1 Japanese version of NTSC – no pedestal
sdtv_mode=2 Normal PAL
sdtv_mode=3 Brazilian version of PAL – 525/60 rather than 625/50, different subcarrier

I'm sure this sort of info is rather basic, where could I have found it out?!
I'm also bloody impressed with Raspbmc, I wanted to get something running ASAP and it delivered. Not so long ago I used to write embedded software for military/telecoms projects and it's amazing that an 18year old kid has put this all together. I think it took us about 3 months dealing with some video issues on a UAV(was cutting edge back then, now all mainstream R300).

did you need an internet connection when you first started it up?

I want to get one of these, only experience with programming is some java, please recommend whether I should get it or not and how easy it is to use. Price locally? also can i connect it to my old monitor, how much is the adapter? (big old box)

Hmmm so do u have to have a wired internet connection or would i be able to use my wifi dongle and connect through wireless?

You'll need a wired internet connection, or at least one did when I last tried.

I'm impressed :). You have more patience than I. Bear in mind that Raspbmc is the part time work of one individual, so its pretty impressive in that. All in all, I have also had issues including the fact that I can't transmit to my remote tv via my video recorder, its fine until movies play and that could be the pal standard issue. Ta for posting a solution to that, ill give it a try.

Got my Pi up and running yesterday. Ordered through electocomp express. Very impressed with them, they got it much sooner than the initial 5 weeks they told me it would take and gave me the revised board edition, despite it not having been announced yet at the time of my order.

So far what I've managed to get running is rasbian, xbmc, transmission (web based torrents) and VNC through xming (using x11 or something, I'm quite the linux noob and have just been doing guides and tutorials for everything). Although I'm struggling a lot as this is a lot less straightforward than I thought it would be, I'm still very impressed. One thing I haven't got going yet is how to access files off my rPi from my windows box (gonna try Samba, but it looks complex).

Anyways, just thought I'd start posting here as it seems this is where the SA rPi community is.

So i phoned RSOnline today and they have only now told me over the phone that there is a delay and the lead time for my RaspberryPI is now the 30 November rather than the initial 20th September. I am totally annoyed that they cant even email me to tell me this. I really want to cancel my order, how do other places compare to deliver? I will never trade with RSOnline ever again.
