The Official Xiaomi Thread

Greetings all,

I have a Xiaomi Mi 5, I need to do a factory reset on it, but have been struggeling.
Firstly, it says the No Sim, but the sim is inserted correct.
Secondly,I need to update the MIUI to the latest in order to do the Reboot factory reset. I tried to do it thru the Updater app,but it says no updates available. So I downloaded it on PC, transferred to the device, unzipped it. When I manually update it, it doesn`t see firmware update folder. I have followed it step by step but its not successful.
When I do a Factory reset, it ask for my Mi Account password, when i enter it,it says password incorrect. I then change the password via Forgot Password, and create a new one, the after that it still says password incorrect.
What support centre should I contact, I have been without network coverage for a few days already, so phoning someone wont work. Please help with some advice. Thanks

I'm just saving up to get a mid/high end phone to replace my G4. If Xiaomi is gonna force junk down on me I will not buy them anymore.
If you can find it, the original Nokia 8, yes the camera isn't as good as the G4 but hell it works and after my G4 this is like a breath of fresh air.

I must say, all this talk about intrusive ads and the time limit on bootloader unlocking and Anti-Rollback (not really Xiaomi's fault though) is steering me towards another brand the next time I am in need of an upgrade.

Its more like them blocking a loophope:

Why does Xiaomi require long bootloader unlock wait times, EDL authorization, and Anti-Rollback Protection?
Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi is the most popular smartphone brand in India thanks to their wide selection of budget and mid-range devices. Like Huawei, Xiaomi also sells a ton of smartphones in their home market of China. Many of these devices are never sold outside of China, but that doesn’t stop people from importing them. Unofficial retailers for Xiaomi products have sprung up on Aliexpress, Gearbest, and other plenty of other websites, allowing anyone from outside China to buy the latest Xiaomi products. This has posed a challenge for the company as the software they ship on their Chinese devices, called “MIUI China,” does not contain Google Play Services, the Google Play Store, or languages other than English or Mandarin. Thus, anyone who imports a Xiaomi device from China shouldn’t be getting Google apps and services outside of the box.

However, third-party retailers figured out a way around this so they could convince customers they were selling Xiaomi devices with an “official” MIUI Global ROM. The retailers would buy Xiaomi devices in bulk, unlock the bootloader, change the software themselves or flash a custom ROM like Xiaomi.eu (unofficial ROMs based on MIUI China but with more languages and features), and then sell the device. Most consumers would have no way of knowing they’re running unofficial/modified software, and would instead blame Xiaomi for a lack of updates or bugs they encounter. Even worse, some retailers would intentionally bundle malware or adware so they could make a bit of extra money. Xiaomi’s reputation was actively being harmed by this practice as tech reviewers and consumers were caught up in the schemes of these unofficial retailers, and so they needed to come up with a way to stop shady retailers from selling modified devices in bulk.

One solution is to completely block bootloader unlocking, which is a drastic move that Huawei recently took. Seeing their brand’s success among enthusiasts, Xiaomi hasn’t moved to block bootloader unlocking just yet. Instead, they’ve implemented a few roadblocks to safeguard users against the actions of malicious third-party retailers.

Edit: Also interesting to note that Mi A1/A2/A2 Lite are not available inside Xiaomi stores in China so I guess that is why we dont have any lead time to unlock bootloaders.

Migrated from Redmi 4x to Note 5 pro. Enjoying the better camera, bigger screen and faster speed

So they told me that my Mi6 is an out of country and uneconomical to repair.
I seriously need a new screen. What can I do?

Go to one of those cell phone repair cubicle shops that are everywhere and claim to fix all cell phones

How old is it? It might be worth simply replacing it. I accidentally broke my Mi Max screen last year and it was more economical to just buy a Mi Max 2 in the end.

I see the Mi Max 3 is out and I'm itching for an excuse to upgrade again. :sneaky:

While I do understand that (and also that they 'at least' still offer unlocked bootloaders) I think they are going about it the wrong way. Why not rather have reps to assist the various issues people have online using fake ROMs and use this info to go after the unauthorized resellers and put an end to the fake ROMs which seem to be giving Xiaomi a bad name? Or put a sticker across each device manufactured that will show VOID when tampered with. Or a 3D sticker or any other method to prevent tampering, I am sure there are many out there.

Also, the ads are in pretty bad taste. I can understand a targeted ad here and there inside a browser window but not within your Cleaner App or wherever else they seem to be popping up on the phone ecosystem.

I am a big fan of the brand and what good value for money offerings they have, but they are far from perfect and things like the intrusive ads and difficulty in unlocking the bootloader makes me a bit hesitant to buy another device from them again.

Mi Max 3 currently on flash sale for $259, which is a bargain. I'm peeved though, I paid $290 a month ago on Presale. So much for early bird catches the worm...

Oh well, it has shipped and awaiting a flight out of waterlogged Hong Kong
