Got myself a xiaomi smart fan

Actually very nice. The motor is very quiet, I barely hear it when I sleep.

You can also automate it depending on the temperature in your room.
Also have one. Great bedroom fan.

My SO has got a Xiaomi Redmi phone a few weeks ago and we were impressed.
My last few phones have been the Samsung Galaxy Note Phones. I use the stylus almost daily for work.

Do any of the Xiaomi Phones come with a stylus? I looked around and couldn't find anything.

No stylus with the Xiaomi phones. I don't think that Samsung include them with their phones either any more...

Is it this?

I can't find 'PRO'
You will need the pro version.

Looking forward to hearing how it goes - that price is so good.
For the money - exceptional value for money!

Considering I paid the same for a Redmi 9A last year - and it was borderline unusable in terms of performance. The phone would sometime ring and you could not answer it since the phone app froze. I actually bought two, one for me to play with and one for my dad as his main phone. He went back to an entry Samsung (of all things) out of frustration - and I don't blame him. Was very happy to ditch those.

Back to the Redmi A1, no such issues, running Android 12 Go means it is snappy and clean. My last "clean" Redmi was the A2 Lite and it served me well for over 2 years. While I am not using the phone it is running World Community Gird on all cores.

In terms of photos, you can get some good shots, but dynamic range is severely limited and HDR is a blur fest.

Some HDR off VS HDR on comparisons:

It does have it's moments and can capture good shots.

Oh great - thanks for sharing! I've never had an Android phone and I'm definitely Xiaomi curious. It's like a whole new world. I'm not too clued up on different models yet, but to my Android-ignorant self this feels like incredibly good value for money.

The A1 is an entry level offering. My main phone is a Note 9T that cost me around R6k two years ago. If you want to get a favourable impression of Android you might want to try a phone a bit higher specced than the A1.

For sure - thanks. I'll probably start by looking at Xiaomi phones in the R4k - R5k range and go from there :)

Samsung offers a two year warranty, worth your consideration I reckon. I haven't seen any Xiaomi phone with more than a one year warranty.

The darker pics are the HDR right? That's been my experience with HDR.

Never needed to use the warranty on my Xiaomi phones. A few years ago, I had a Remdi 2 that was still going strong running LineageOS. That said my Mi A2 Lite lasted 4 years.

Other way round. Darker pics are HDR-off and in my opinion the way to go with this camera.

HDR takes two (or more) photos in rapid succession at different exposure levels (brightness sensitivity) and then blends them into one image. On higher end phones with faster image sensors and faster processors this works very well. On low end devices like the A1 I am using the sensor take a bit longer to reach the desires higher sensitivity for the second shot by which time your hand could have moved slightly. Then the limited processing power has to merge the images together.

The results are always a more "smeared" image on low end phones. Although this is nowhere near as bad as a couple of years ago with sub R500 Mobicell and Vodafone Androids that were still on Kit-kat/Lollipop with fixed focus 2MP sensors.

The lens on the A1 is autofocus and therefor does have some moving elements inside, as can be seen by the lens flare in this shot (purple ring in the lower right):

Macro focus is acceptable:

However, at the price point it is inevitable the lens is not high quality and consistent throughout the image.
Here are some 1:1 crops where you can see ducks on the dam in one part of the photo, yet towards the edge of the same image the foliage is blurred - this may be helped on by image processing and compression:

Has anyone done a battery replacement for Xiaomi anywhere in JHB before?
Most cheap cellphone repair shops should be able to do that, the guy that bought my "battery-expanded" A2 Lite said it would cost him around R500 to have the battery replaced, I think he was in Nelspruit.
