Agang SA calls for Tlakula to stand down

Agang SA on Thursday urged Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) chairwoman Pansy Tlukula to step down until after the elections.

Agang SA spokesman Paul O'Sullivan said Tlakula and Stephen Langtry should step down in the interest of a free and fair election.

A forensic investigation by auditors PriceWaterhouseCoopers on behalf of the National Treasury on the procurement of the IEC's Riverside Office Park building in Centurion, Pretoria was released last week.

The report indicated the procurement process was not fair, transparent, or cost-effective.

It also found that Tlakula did not give guidance or formally inform various people what was expected of them in the process.

"Against this background, it is critical that the IEC remains above reproach.

"It simply cannot do that with Tlakula and Langtry still in their positions," said O'Sullivan.

He said the level of integrity and ethics in the IEC had evaporated, placing oversight of the elections at risk, and calling the whole organisation into doubt.

Agang SA also called on deputy chief electoral officer Norman du Plessis to step down, but IEC spokeswoman Kate Bapela said he had resigned.

Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele said teachers who had in the past been deployed to manage polling stations and were members of the SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) should be removed from this role.

"There is an inherent conflict of interest in Sadtu members operating as electoral officers in a multi-party election process," Ramphele said.

She said the integrity of the election was at stake.

Tlakula must step down to avoid the possibility of civil war: Malema

Opposition parties will initiate legal proceedings against the Independent Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) if chairwoman Pansy Tlakula does not resign, EFF leader Julius Malema said on Tuesday.

"You cannot separate the issues of maladministration and corruption on the (acquisition) of the property from having such acts happening during the elections," Malema said after a multi-party forum meeting with the IEC in Pretoria.

"It is in the interest of the unity of this country, to avoid the possibility of civil war and disputed election results. She has seven days to step down or appropriate action will be announced regarding what is going to follow."

The forum of opposition parties met to discuss Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's finding on the Nkandla upgrades and controversy around Tlakula.

Chairman of the multi-party forum, Bantu Holomisa, who also heads the United Democratic Movement, said the opposition parties resolved to push for Tlakula's resignation.

"All the political parties present, with the exception of the Democratic Alliance and the Freedom Front Plus, agreed that advocate Tlakula must resign immediately," Holomisa said.

"Should she refuse to resign, the parties who are in agreement will pursue legal action."

The parties said there was no discussion about boycotting the May 7 elections.

The forum consists of the African Christian Democratic Party, AgangSA, Azapo, the Economic Freedom Fighters, FF Plus, Inkatha Freedom Party, United Christian Democratic Party, and Holomisa's UDM.

AgangSA leader Mamphela Ramphele said the electoral body should be headed by a person "without a whiff of a cloud over her head".

"If the electoral process is conducted under a cloud hanging over the head of the chair (Tlakula), we cannot say citizens have the power to hold public officials accountable," she said.

"It is ultimately disrespectful of South African citizens to have a chair implicated in issues raised by both the Public Protector and the forensic audit presiding over an election."

On Nkandla, the parties resolved to convene another summit after President Jacob Zuma had addressed Parliament, as ordered by Madonsela.

In her report on the upgrades at Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, titled "Secure in Comfort", Public Protector Thuli Madonsela found Zuma had unduly benefited from improvements to his private homestead.

These included a cattle kraal and swimming pool built with taxpayers' money. She stated in the report that he should refund a portion of the R246 million cost.

The parties also discussed what they called a manipulation of the SA Broadcasting Corporation by the African National Congress.

Yet you seem to be fine with the mostly criminal corrupt government and criminal leaders like Zuma and despots like Malema and his EFF supporters disrupting this country with their damaging policies and actions.
 
Uhmm, the EFF is the first party to call for Tlakula's head. So I wonder who's bandwagoning.

Sounds like the DA and FF+ were present but did not agree with the other parties' stance.

What were the PP's recommendations?

EDIT: The DA are not part of that forum.
