Is overclocking really something I should be considering? What kind of performance improvements do you get, considering I assume there is quite a big price differential, as you need better MB and cooling

As far as Intel vs AMD, I just would rather pay more and stick with Intel.



As far as the usage, I should have probably said that currently my desktop is a torrent client/"NAS"

I am hoping that spending a bit of cash will "force" me to play more games, I do enjoy it.

Go with what Ponder said then, get the Rx480 and you'll be sorted. I never overclock. It's for people who really like that kind of thing. I just buy standard, use it till it can't play the games I need no more and then build a new machine. If you into OCing then sure it's worth the extra cash. But the gains are negligible unless you spend BIG cash on it.

Yeah it's gonna cost more to take advantage of the K cpu, at that price you might as well get a i7-6700 for R3300 from gtxgaming

No. And an i5 isn't low-end...it's middle of the road i.e well-balanced.

The 6700k actually has 4 cores with hyperthreading (6 on the 6800). Which one works best will depend on what software you'll be using and if it scales well with more cores.

Also remember that only the "K" processors (eg 6700k) are able to overclock.

I probably wouldn't buy a high end CPU right now though with the release of AMD's Ryzen processor imminent (sometime in the next 4 months), unless of course you need it now.

The performance is related to the amount of cores or threads the cpu has or the frequency the cpu is clocked at BUT it all depends on whether the specific application is coded to take advantage of it. In some instances a gpu would also be of no benefit because the specific application has not been coded to take afvange of gpu rendering. So at the end of the day the system built and associated performance depends on the application.

Example https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/AutoDesk-3ds-Max-2017-CPU-Performance-823/ so here the i7-6700k offers the best performance for 3ds max beating out more expensive processors. This applies to 3ds max but might not apply for the other applications you use.

I watched a linustechtips video where they bought a ***** off Uber xeon for their video decoding etc and they never understood why performance was meh. After fiddling and researching they found that the programs were not coded to make use of all the cores. They got better performance from a 6700k or something like that.

So I'm saying try research how your programs utilize the cpu. (and gpu)

At our printing shop we use Coreldraw and most of the Adobe products, also the 3D one's. They are so GPU dependent. We get away with a 6 series AMD Gpu at this stage, but on the Normal Intel GPU things takes twice as long. So yeah I would say stick to that 1080 and spend as much as you can on the CPU and ram size / speed.

~R6500 will buy you an i5-6500 CPU, H110 MB, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 450W PSU. You still need a GPU and that is the most expensive component in the entire system.

What do you currently have available that you can use, monitor, keyboard, mouse, hard drive etc etc?
Can you up your budget at all?

Hi Guys,

So i have been out of the IT game for a while and haven't been following Tech trends much, so I'm in need of some assistance.

I am looking to build a PC which will iltimately become a gaming rig, though for now that will be out of the budget, so I'd like to build some future-proofing into the base components (MB, RAM) so that I won't be needing to replace these when a new socket is released etc.

Unfortunately I have no parts currently, bar a wireless mouse, so this will be a full build from scratch. I do have a 32" TV I could use as a monitor if need be, but obviously buying a proper screen would be ideal.

Budget is around R10k and I'd like to go ATX so that I have expansion space for decent cooler, GPU etc when the time comes for those upgrades. However, is that's silly, just tell me and point me in the right direction.

I have been looking at various builds and so forth, but honestly I'm not sure where the Intel/AMD & nVidia / Radeon wars are currently at.

I obviously do want to be able to game from the outset, so on-board GFX are not an option. I don't particularly care about fancy keyboards, mouse etc, just need something functional that can be upgraded as time goes by.

This is my current idea, subject to your input:

You are on the right track, I'm however going to suggest the following.

Drop the G4500 and get a i5-6500 or i7-6700

You can drop the fancy cooler and get a cheapie seeing as you are not overclocking and these cpus don't really run that hot under load. On the hottests days here I hit about 70C which is fine.

Drop the 120GB ssd as it's tiny and you are not gonna fit much on there, when you have money in future get a 256/512GB ssd. Just used the hdd for now.

Get 1x8GB stick of ram instead of 2x4GB seeing as you only have two dimm slots and in future should you need more ram you just pop another 8GB in there and you dont have to faf around trying to flog the 2x4GB stick in order to upgrade to 16GB.

Do you need a optical drive, things have become pretty redundant if you ask me.

If you have to buy a gpu now rather get a secondhand gpu off carbonite, you can get something more powerful for way less money.

Agree with most what you said except for this. A 120GB SSD just for OS is fine and will improve the experience dramatically.
