You are on the right track, I'm however going to suggest the following.

Drop the G4500 and get a i5-6500 or i7-6700

You can drop the fancy cooler and get a cheapie seeing as you are not overclocking and these cpus don't really run that hot under load. On the hottests days here I hit about 70C which is fine.

Drop the 120GB ssd as it's tiny and you are not gonna fit much on there, when you have money in future get a 256/512GB ssd. Just used the hdd for now.

Get 1x8GB stick of ram instead of 2x4GB seeing as you only have two dimm slots and in future should you need more ram you just pop another 8GB in there and you dont have to faf around trying to flog the 2x4GB stick in order to upgrade to 16GB.

Do you need a optical drive, things have become pretty redundant if you ask me.

If you have to buy a gpu now rather get a secondhand gpu off carbonite, you can get something more powerful for way less money.

Thanks for the advice. I see your point regarding the CPU Cooler and RAM, both valid. I think the SSD is a good idea, as it's just for OS usage, not storage, though honestly I have no idea how large a Win 10 installation is.

On the GPU, I guess I'm a little leary of second-hand, likely overclocked GFX. Sudden death is not a game I enjoy and as much as I enjoyed National Treasure, artifacts just aren't my thing.

SSD is fine for OS only. Server 2014 requires less than 80GB so you will be fine.

Buying off of Carbonite is fine as long as you buy from a guy with good rep. Shout if you need help - I know a Carbonite junky that also posts here every now and then, so we can ask him to have a look for you and keep well within your price range. Spending 2k on a 1050 will only frustrate you within 6 months, at which point you will have to spend another 3 - 5k for something better. I also doubt you will be able to sell the 1050 to anyone for close to what you paid for it.

I am currently running a 770 and it's almost time for me to upgrade, but don't have the dosh at the moment, so holding on to it for now. :)

Just started the process for my 2017 PC build.

Ordered a Phanteks Enthoo Evolv case and Corsair RM650i PSU. Will transplant my old PC stuff into this case and then wait for Ryzen and Vega to see what happens.

I get the feeling you're always in the middle of a build :p

Hi guys,

I have 14k to spend on tower. I need the system for video editing and image processing. Not doing anything currently so this will be my start.

Any suggestions will be welcome.

Start by ordering this http://www.gtxgaming.co.za/index.php?route=product/product&path=73&product_id=139

I'm gonna have to apologise for not being able to help you further right now but I blame some of my zimbo friends for that. We can take this further tomorrow and we can put a build together for you.

Any suggestions will be welcome.

I'm sitting at 14k on the build but it excludes a case/psu/cooler :o

So far I have this,
http://www.gtxgaming.co.za/index.php?route=product/product&path=73&product_id=139
http://www.wootware.co.za/gigabyte-ga-b150m-d3h-lga1151-skylake-micro-atx-desktop-motherboard.html
http://www.wootware.co.za/g-skill-f...b-ddr4-2400mhz-cl15-1-20v-desktop-memory.html
http://www.wootware.co.za/western-d...-64mb-cache-3-5-inch-internal-hard-drive.html
http://www.wootware.co.za/samsung-m...ta-6gb-s-3d-v-nand-m-2-solid-state-drive.html
http://www.wootware.co.za/powercolo...-card-includes-civilization-vi-game-code.html

We can go for a cheaper h110 MB but that leaves you with only 4x sata ports, 2x dimm slots, and no m.2 slot. So you have no extra space to expand ram and you are limited to 4 drives, I know people that dio video editing usually have lots of storage due to the size of the projects.

The hdd is 3TB and I doubt you wanna go for a 1TB drive. I also doubt you wanna drop the 250GB ssd.

You can drop the gpu but then all rendering & processing gets done by the cpu.

So what would you like to cut?

Anything you would change on this build?

I am basically wanting to go "budget"

This machine will spend 90% of it's life downloading torrents and sharing its drives over the network to my RPi2

I would also want to comfortably play Mass Effect 3, and ME Andromeda, as well as things like Dragon Age: Origin, etc.
I will not be playing Online FPS.

1080p will be my limit, maybe 1440p if I ever buy a new monitor for home.

It ended up being a good thing that Wootware was closed for the holidays, as that made sure I got what I really wanted (after a little research :P )

At my current monitor's native resolution (1680 x 1050), I am getting average of around 96fps in Shadow of Mordor's built in benchmark, and default settings (looks a mixture of high and ultra???)

Overall I am very happy with this machine

I would look at dropping the hdd for now. But what about going foe a slightly cheaper CPU?

So one of my old pc's got hit by lightning and I'm getting paid out R6000. I want to use the R6000 to upgrade my pc and build another streaming pc (I probably have to throw in some cash).

So I'm thinking get a new CPU, Mobo and Ram. I like 4x Ram slots because I normally end up fulling them before the pc dies but this isn't a necessity . I'm also looking at the new kabby cores preferably an I5 http://www.wootware.co.za/intel-i5-...4nm-kaby-lake-socket-lga1151-desktop-cpu.html and wondering if you need newer tech mobos to use all the features of the CPU (dont want to bottle neck it as I buy it). With the Ram I dont mind getting 8gb's now and get another 8gb's later on.

Money is a bit tight this month as its January so would like to fit the Mobo, Cpu and Ram into the R6000 and then buy the case and PSU a bit later.

My current pc specs
- i5 4460
- mobo http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4489#ov
- 2x8gb DDR 3 1800mhz
- 500w Aero cool PSU
- 2x2tb hard drives internal, 1x1.5gb hybrid drive and a couple of externals
- 1x240gb SSD
- GPU Powercolour RX480

Lying around parts
- Radeon saphire 7700
- 2x 500gb hard drives

Needed for the streaming pc
- Cheap PSU, enough to run the 7700
- Cheap case

Any input or things I forgot are welcome.

My 2017 mega build is now waiting for AMD :)

So far the components will probably look like this:

Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX Case
Corsair RM650i PSU

MSI X370 XPOWER Gaming Titanium (TBD)
AMD Ryzen 8-core/16-thread CPU (TBD)
Corsair H100i GTX AIO (probably)
16GB DDR4 3600MHZ
Samsung 256GB NVME M.2 drive
2TB HDD
Radeon Vega 10 GPU (I've got an RX480 holding me up for now)
Asus MG278Q 27" Free-Sync Monitor
Keyboard and mouse TBD

It's a good thing the AMD stuff is still coming, gives me time to pace the purchases. The bolded items are already purchased.

Anything you would change here?

It's just over R6k, if you want it under R6k get a H110M MB but then you only get 2 dimm slots for ram and no m.2 slot...

See no need for upgrading the 4460 pc, most i would do is get a tray i7 if you really need it http://www.gtxgaming.co.za/index.php?route=product/product&path=73&product_id=112 and put the other R3k towards a pukka gpu, that's what I would do.

Yeah that pc is just gonna sit behind the tv and play movies, don't think I'm gonna do much to it. Will something like this http://www.wootware.co.za/intel-i5-...4nm-kaby-lake-socket-lga1151-desktop-cpu.html work with http://www.wootware.co.za/gigabyte-ga-b150m-d3h-lga1151-skylake-micro-atx-desktop-motherboard.html.

Being 7th gen CPU but the sockets match up?

I have to ask why? The i7-6700 is better than the i5-7500 and you are getting it for less than the i5. Kabylake offers very little over Skylake. The last few generations of cpus have offered very little over their predecessors and kaby has been the worst so far met with no enthusiasm from the market.

Oops read that wrong thought it was an i5 . Thanks for the help

MSI X370 XPOWER Gaming Titanium (TBD)

This reminds me...I like how AMD added 100 to Intel's chipset model number. "Oh you're launching a 270...we'll launch a 370".

Some marketing guys at Intel are annoyed, I'll bet.

Re your choice - are you planning to multi-GPU?

So I am building a PC,

So far I have this old case I plan on using
and removing a SSD from mylaptop
And I have this motherboard that looked good but I haven't really found many reviews on.

Viper Case
MSI Intel Z170A Gaming M3 Motherboard
250GB SSD

I am going to update this thread as I go, I am trying to do this cheaply but still decent. The GPU is my biggest bugbear so far!
