^^, if he got the board and CPU from the same place, ask them to sort it out. It's a bit poor if they didn't pick up the issue before selling it.

Thing is you can't place the blame on the retailer, many times the item does not even go via them. People have the same issue when ordering from the likes of newegg, amazon, microcenter etc. What you are asking of them is to receive the MB, open the box, set the MB up to flash the bios and in the process risk damaging the cpu socket pins etc, involves a lot of labour as well.

I put the responsibility on the manufacturers, there should be a simple way to flash the bios without the cpu.

^, all true but given it's Wootware, I don't think it's unfair to expect better from them. They're a specialist hardware place unlike a Takealot or Raru.

But they also offer really good prices don't they? Their customer service generally speaking seems to be above par. Can't have it all IMO...

Their pricing is in line with other decent places like Raru \ Rebeltech \ Loot...much of a muchness really.

Wootware's been very good to me in the past so I do hold them to a higher standard, I guess. If I was OP's friend though, I would have known about the BIOS issue and asked Wootware to flash the board for me before sending it out. So a little bit of customer responsibility also.

So I have changed my original, and this is now it.

Anything you guys would change?

My only worry is the ram, is 3200 needed? is 16gb enough?

That case  :D

Looks like good value components, the only thing that I would have changed is the PSU if Wootware had stock of these: http://www.wootware.co.za/super-flo...ified-fully-modular-desktop-power-supply.html but unfortunately they're out - would have been nice as it's a much better PSU and fully modular for cheaper. You probably could save a few bucks though and get the 550W version of that PSU though.

RAM speed definitely helps (just be sure to set up the correct XMP profile when setting up), so if it's not a lot more expensive I'd say it's worth it. 16GB is the perfect amount IMO.

^, the case's aesthetics are one thing (that's subjective) but the review is dated 2004? What's going on there?

I would get something more evolved...that thing is probably not going to be very user-friendly to work in if you can even find one.

Other bits look good though the CPU seems overkill for that GPU at the moment - from a long-term investment point of view, the overclocking potential makes sense though (as in, get a better GPU in future and pair it with the same CPU).

Oh wow, didn't even notice that. Explains its "dated" aesthetics. Probably the OPs existing case, hence no shopping link.

^, Ah, so it's acquired sentimental value...cool.

How far have modern cases come from an ease of use point of view? I swear the first case I ever used in the 90's had teeth and hated me. Nowadays you don't even need a screwdriver except maybe to mount the board.

Are you guys talking about that schit looking Viper case or what?

1. That CPU is not going to work on that MB unless you flash the MB BIOS to a later version. In order to flash the BIOS you need a Skylake CPU. So you will have to borrow a Skylake CPU or take the MB to a PC shop for flashing. If I remember correctly you already have the MB as it was a gift?

2. That MB has a m.2 slot so instead of the sata ssd you might wanna look into a m.2 ssd, they are much faster but also cost more.

3. Yes the RAM is fine. Speed will help in some apps & games also overclocking. 16GB is plenty.

I don't understand how they order their stock, as soon as they get the SF psus in they are sold out in a very short period of time. One would assume that they can see how quickly they sell out and thus would order more next time round but no they don't by the looks of things as they are always out of stock on the SF stuff...

I would rather advise just get a z270 mobo for all that effort

He already has the Z170 MB, it was given to him as a gift so he can't change that.

If he wants to get a 7th gen cpu then I would rather sell the z170.
Or if he wants to keep the z170 then I would rather get the 6700/k instead of messing around too much with the bios
