PCIe gen 4.0 is not really super useful right now, I wouldn't consider it in your purchase decision unless you have some specific need to connect up a bunch of super fast NVMe storage.

I've started to look at upgrade options for my box and my so, for intel is it better to get a KS instead of a K (I9s)? I'm also considering the ryzen for myself but for gaming, vms, development would it actually be better? I can afford either I9 K/KS or similar priced ryzen, but amd and I just don't know. Will it be as awesome as the Athlone Hammer?

The KS is better as it will maintain 5GHZ turbo across all cores, for purely gaming this is the best cpu. Seeing as you you'll be doing dev work and using vms the 12c24t of the 3900x will probably suit you better. There's also the 3950x beast

Not needed unless you have hectic storage IO needs.

Wrt MBs make sure you pick one with decent vrms, checkout hardware unboxed & buildzoid reviews.

Spoilt myself and went and bought one, definitely not a good value but dang I cannot wait to see this thing chew through compiles.

Not quite sure how Evetech got their hands on stock already when nobody else has any, but I did email them and they confirmed they had stock so let's hope they actually do.

I'm asking R9500 for the PC (Ryzen 5 1600, GTX1070, 16GB 3200 B-die RAM, 250GB Samsung SSD, 550W Modular PSU & Windows 10 Pro) but either my pricing is way off or the market is just a little dead right now.

I don't mean to derail this thread, was just wanting to gather some opinions

Yes, a bit overpriced. These are the used component prices by themselves:

Ryzen 1600 - ~R1500
Mobo - ~R600? (No idea what board it is but assuming budget B350)
GTX 1060 - ~R2000
16GB 3200 Memory - ~R1400
250GB SSD -~ R400
PSU - ~R600 (depending on type)
Case - R500?
Windows 10 has almost zero resale value on the used market

Total: R7000

Does it come with monitor and/or mouse+keyboard?

I added ballpark amounts more or less in line with what I have seen on Carb. I cringed when I added the price to my RAM - because I had to buy at it's peak when it cost me around R4k for 16GB. Now that same set is closer to R2k a year and a bit later.

It's been gathering dust, I don't get time to game anymore. I'd rather someone else use it instead of it sitting on my desk not being used. The itch will need to be scratched again in the future, but I think I am giving gaming a break for 2020 and 2021

Yep, those prices look reasonable then. I think you should just sell the components off separately though, a lot of people don't want to buy an entire system.

Sucks about the memory, that is a really nice kit that has lost a ton of value.

I was contemplating selling the stuff separately but I am so worried that I get stuck with a piece or two that I sit with until the end of time (as is my luck). But it is a lot of dosh to drop for an 'old' PC so perhaps I can look at that if I don't manage within the next week or two.

I don't recall the exact amount but I think it amounted to R3950 with shipping for the RAM. Seeing as you can pick up 32GB of the same stuff for a grand less really hurts my soul more than Eskom hurts this economy

I took the plunge and ordered a SFF Ncase M1 v6.1. They just reopened their site for orders. Since I mainly game I am thinking of going for i9ks but Ryzen looks pretty tempting as well.
