The PC Build Thread

I've started to look at upgrade options for my box and my so, for intel is it better to get a KS instead of a K (I9s)? I'm also considering the ryzen for myself but for gaming, vms, development would it actually be better? I can afford either I9 K/KS or similar priced ryzen, but amd and I just don't know. Will it be as awesome as the Athlone Hammer?

The KS is better as it will maintain 5GHZ turbo across all cores, for purely gaming this is the best cpu. Seeing as you you'll be doing dev work and using vms the 12c24t of the 3900x will probably suit you better. There's also the 3950x beast :whistling:

edit-
what about pcie 4.0?

Not needed unless you have hectic storage IO needs.

Wrt MBs make sure you pick one with decent vrms, checkout hardware unboxed & buildzoid reviews.

I've got a PC with an i7 2600 cpu, currently on a Intel DP67BG mb, which has given up the ghost. Where would I be able to find a replacement motherboard for it? I'm battling to find on local supplier sites

Try second hand on Carbonite although you might have a hard time: https://carbonite.co.za/index.php?search/856742/&q=1155+motherboard&o=relevance

You can also get new ones from China, e.g) https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesal...SB_20191210054834&SearchText=1155+motherboard

Spoilt myself and went and bought one, definitely not a good value but dang I cannot wait to see this thing chew through compiles.

Not quite sure how Evetech got their hands on stock already when nobody else has any, but I did email them and they confirmed they had stock so let's hope they actually do.

On the topic of Carbonite, I posted up my PC there and on the classifieds over here, but I think my prices are a bit high?

I'm asking R9500 for the PC (Ryzen 5 1600, GTX1070, 16GB 3200 B-die RAM, 250GB Samsung SSD, 550W Modular PSU & Windows 10 Pro) but either my pricing is way off or the market is just a little dead right now.

I don't mean to derail this thread, was just wanting to gather some opinions :)

Yes, a bit overpriced. These are the used component prices by themselves:

Ryzen 1600 - ~R1500
Mobo - ~R600? (No idea what board it is but assuming budget B350)
GTX 1060 - ~R2000
16GB 3200 Memory - ~R1400
250GB SSD -~ R400
PSU - ~R600 (depending on type)
Case - R500?
Windows 10 has almost zero resale value on the used market

Total: R7000

Does it come with monitor and/or mouse+keyboard?

Check what the individual components go for on carb and add them up for a total.

Why you selling?

I added ballpark amounts more or less in line with what I have seen on Carb. I cringed when I added the price to my RAM - because I had to buy at it's peak when it cost me around R4k for 16GB. Now that same set is closer to R2k a year and a bit later.

It's been gathering dust, I don't get time to game anymore. I'd rather someone else use it instead of it sitting on my desk not being used. The itch will need to be scratched again in the future, but I think I am giving gaming a break for 2020 and 2021

Here are the specs with ballpark prices added by me:

Ryzen 5 1600 - R1600
Asus Prime X370 PRO Board - R1600
Zotac GTX 1070 Mini - R2800
16GB (2x8GB) G.Skill TridentZ 3200C14 RGB RAM - R2000
Samsung 860 Evo 250GB - R850
Super Flower 550W Modular PSU - R800
Cooler Master Storm Scout I & 1TB Mechanical Hard Drive - R500

Just the chassis and contents for now. The monitor and keyboard mouse is budget stuff that won't even fetch R500. The PSU, RAM and SSD still have some warranty left

EDIT: I see I said GTX1060 by mistake. Fixed :)

Yep, those prices look reasonable then. I think you should just sell the components off separately though, a lot of people don't want to buy an entire system.

Sucks about the memory, that is a really nice kit that has lost a ton of value.

I was contemplating selling the stuff separately but I am so worried that I get stuck with a piece or two that I sit with until the end of time (as is my luck). But it is a lot of dosh to drop for an 'old' PC so perhaps I can look at that if I don't manage within the next week or two.

I don't recall the exact amount but I think it amounted to R3950 with shipping for the RAM. Seeing as you can pick up 32GB of the same stuff for a grand less really hurts my soul more than Eskom hurts this economy :crying:

List the individual prices in the ad as well and state that you will be willing to part out on the condition that you have buyers for all items before parting out.

I did exactly that. Not one single bite though

I took the plunge and ordered a SFF Ncase M1 v6.1. They just reopened their site for orders. Since I mainly game I am thinking of going for i9ks but Ryzen looks pretty tempting as well.

So my GTX 1070 (I suspect) has recently started dying. I bought it 2nd hand about 2 years ago post crypto mining crash for quite a good deal. The owner denied ever having mined on it, and even gave me the original receipt (it was about 7 months old at the time).

My monitor has been going black randomly - as if the signal momentarily disappears - and then comes back on its own. I booted up the other day, and could see nothing except weird artifacting - vertical multicoloured bars all across the screen. Reboot did nothing. Reseated everything, and could boot normally. Yesterday, on boot, the screen displayed a blue box about 1/4 of the screen's size top left. Again, went through the reseating procedure until it was normal again.

It's too late to RMA or exchange it, so I guess it's time for an upgrade. I really like the look of the RX 5700 XT - but am put off by the dozens of threads and videos everywhere of people complaining about the dogshit drivers AMD keeps putting out. As well as loads more with fixes just to get the card to sort of run. It also runs quite hot (nothing new for AMD). Also, I'd be pushing my limits with my 550W PSU. But, bang for your buck, it's one of the best cards out there. And there are also loads of people who haven't had any issues at all.

Next option, and for the same price, is the 2060 Super. The chip and drivers have been out for a while now, and the card is only slightly behind the 5700 XT. I could literally just swap it out with my current card, and be on my way.

So, do I play it safe? Or gamble on something that could be an amazing card now, or struggle for like 10 months when AMD eventually get the drivers right?
