Linux is fine on amd.

BSOD messages is most likely related to heating. Either CPU, GPU or motherboard is overheating. Clean out all dust and fans and see if it still crashes.

I had this a few months ago. For me it was actually the motherboard overheating due to not enough airflow in the case. My front case fan that sucks in air had stopped working and I didn't know until I opened it up.

Thanks. Have had a quick look but plan to check, clean and reseat components. While the Highveld air is still relatively moist and risk of shorting things out is lower.

Weird thing is it worked better for a while after I replaced the CMOS battery. Now completely unreliable

Ryzen 5 5500 6c/12t CPU + A520 MB + 32GB (2*16) 3200MHz RAM will set you back ~R5400

i3 13100f 4c/8t CPU + B660 MB + 32GB (2*16) 3200MHz RAM will set you back ~R6200

Both MB above have 4 DIMM slots so you could get slightly cheaper MBs with 2 DIMM slots.

AMD is 6 core 12 thread while Intel is 4 core 8 thread.
 
Hi everyone, looking at making the move from console to PC for gaming purposes. Only thing is PC is insanely expensive to get started from what I've seen, investing like 15k ZAR straight away is pretty hectic. BUT, I came across an interesting video from LTT on a $69 (ZAR1300) pc build. Has anyone attempted to recreate such a build or does anyone have a budget build for around 2k ZAR that would achieve okay-ish results? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Depends on what kinda games you wanna play

im still running a dell optiplex 3020 with a 4th gen i5, 8GB and a 1050ti... does the job for Dota2 and will probably do you ok in most esports titles... Modern AAAs might be a problem... dont expect to play on high graphics settings.
The optiplex was R2K and the card was R2.5K probably about 5 yrs ago...

that said, save up that 15K and you can probably build a 5600 with a 6650 that could probably handle anything at 1080p

I've seen the i5 12500 recommended before but didn't realise how frikken expensive it is!! I may be tempted by the Ryzen if can't resurrect the old system.

I was burnt many years ago buying a Celeron, and feel the same way towards i3's. Too little cache to be of much practical use if you need to push them. Maybe I'm out of date..

Ryzen would be better

My brother is running a 12100F with a 3080 and is having no issues at all - the new CPUs are extremely fast, especially considering your budget - you won't be getting a GPU that maxes out your CPU, so entry-level would be more than enough.

Even I’ve went with Ryzen always used intel but the value and power you get for the money with Ryzen is great
 
What’s everyone’s thoughts on the RTX 4070

Original plan was to get the RX 6800 XT

Should I instead settle for the 4070

Remember some of the Ryzen CPU has PCI express 3.0 not 4.0

Not sure this impacts performance in gaming and yes there are a few Ryzens with 4.0

6800XT is a lot cheaper - the 4070 is going to be around R19-R22k. 6800XT is currently R11,999 at Wootware. Performance is comparable, not accounting for Ray-Tracing and DLSS 3.0, so depends on how badly you want those technologies. But for the money it's a no-brainer in my opinion.

My thoughts are I never stand around and admire the scenery, most games are fast paced so I don't even pay attention to things like shadow quality etc so ray tracing would be lost on me. Smooth high fps is all I want.

Sometimes you do end up doing it, like I did in Mechwarrior 5 :-)

I'm running a 5600x with 32 gig DDR4 ram, a B550 motherboard and an old GTX1060 GPU. I'm running Plex, Blue iris, Home Assistant and using it for general work and gaming. It's a great combination and you can get bargain prices for the cou and motherboard. Do yourself a favour and browse Amazon

Thanks for the advice, currently looking at the same Optiplex or the HP Z series.
