Thank you for the reply. That is a fair bit over his budget though (R6k - R7k, sorry my edit came too late), he is a casual gamer.

6-7 but he wanted to buy a piece of shyte for R 8k?

You would be able to build that piece of shyte with the 6-7k budget though. Just shop around. If he doesn't want to build a new machine, have a look at good second hand machines or carbonite.

Some alternative options wrt the above components
A cheaper chassis:

A cheaper MB option but has no front panel USB3 support:
http://www.wootware.co.za/msi-h81m-...1-express-1150-m-atx-desktop-motherboard.html
A cheaper GPU & PSU option:

Even cheaper GPU & PSU but I won't go lower:

http://www.wootware.co.za/super-flo...plus-gold-certified-desktop-power-supply.html

I only looked at Wootware (except for CPU) and you could probably get a few of the items for slightly cheaper on takealot (also check rebeltech). A cheaper CPU cooler would be fine & you could also get a cheaper case. I only spec'd a single 8GB DIMM in case you wanna upgrade to 16GB later or you can go with 2x4GB to take advantage of dual channel setup.

Where you located?

It's a shame broadwell isn't cheaper, you could potentialy build a nice entry level gaming box.

I got mine running on a 150 Watt psu in a CFI 6719 chassis. It runs madmax on normal settings in 720p just fine.

Hi guys, I was busy trying to get a decent budget PC, but I went for Skylake which I see now was a big mistake (given the link up top which says no gaming benefit).

What I need:
  • Intel + Nvidia Combo
  • Need just the CPU + GPU + MOBO + RAM (maybe chasis + PSU?)
  • I am aiming for Micro ATX, only if it wont increase prices drastically
  • I have a 600W powersupply but it is 6 years old??
  • Trying to get lower towards R 5000
  • Must support 2 screens

Wootware PC:
MOBO: MSI H81I Series M-ATX (LGA 1150) - R 1 158.00
CPU: i5 4460 - R 2 899.00
GPU: GTX 950 2 GB - R 2 949.00
RAM: 8 GB x 1 (1600 MHz) - R 640.00
Chasis: Coolermaster Elite 344 - R 518.00

Total: R 8 164.00

My current PC:
MOBO: Asus P7P55D
CPU: i5 750
GPU: Radeon HD 5870
RAM: 4 GB (1333 MHz)
Chasis: Cooler Master HAF 922 * Might need to use to save costs
PSU: OCZ 600w ModXstream * Can I use 6 year old PSU?
Storage: 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD * Will use
OS: Windows 10 64 bit

As you can see I overshot R 5000 by a mile. So any suggestions? Looking to game Fallout 4 on medium / High though after that generally just Dota (which my current PC plays at 80 FPS). Saving money is my biggest factor. Possibly going i3 and weaker graphics card? Really trying to get as close to R 5000 as possible. Will build it myself :D.

Also I just used Wootware for a base. Will compare with Evetech, Titan Ice, takealot. Any other reliable people?

You will have to go second hand if you have a strict budget or get the i5 kit now and upgrade your gpu later.

http://carbonite.co.za/f39/cpus-galore-110734/?highlight=i5+4460

Edit: I wouldn't buy a second hand mobo though. If your still over budget maybe get the Asus H81M-K instead, it should be a little cheaper than the MSI.
Your PSU should still be OK for the new build

Absolutely do not spend R3k on a crappy GTX 950. That card is rubbish. I paid the same amount for my secondhand Sapphire HD7990, which is more powerful than a GTX 980. While my card was particularly good value for money, there are always good deals available. Check out Carbonite, and buy from a trusted seller.

That's not a mATX MB, the mATX version is much cheaper but lacks front USB3 headers.
Get an i5-4590 from PotterH on carbonite for R1850(?)
GTX 950 for R3k is waste of money.

Thanks for the replies.

@Ponder: Sorry my mistake XD. But I think the MSI is still better (Has HDMI + 2 more USB 3.0 ports).

@Bryn: Hmmmm, ok might consider my nvidia only policy, will take a look around for 2nd hand.

@ODTech: Thanks, really appreciate it. Just want to know since I have never used carbonite, people reliable, etc? Should I look out for anything in particular? Those i5 deals are amazing!

Carbonite has an iTrader system, where you can see the users rating and read reviews previous people have given them.

You can buy the i5 and RAM from the same guy, he has 8GB for R450 currently listed.

@Soul Assassin, thank you, everyone here has helped so much and I really appreciate it!!!

Only reason I mentioned it is "I am aiming for Micro ATX"

The MSI H81M-P33 is the m-ATX one while the MSI H81-P33 is ATX and yes the ATX one is better.

It's not really a build, per se, but has anybody stripped down an old laptop for use as a media centre? I have an ASUS G73 that could do a good job but I'd prefer to make it look a little more interesting than just sitting on my TV stand next to the big screen. I saw one where a guy stripped a laptop and placed it between 2 pieces of perspex, looked cool, just trying to see if anybody has ideas. I thought maybe an HTPC box and put the guys in there? It's got a laptop bluray drive, the kind where the whole mechanism pops out to load the disk. Would that be a pain to reuse?

Cover it in bubble wrap...when the show you're watching is boring, you'll have something to do. Win win.

:)

Hi guys

My old computer blew up a couple years ago and since then I've made do with my rubbish laptop. I'm wanting to put that to an end. I've got a budget of around R10 000 but have to build the thing from scratch. I've done some looking around and put together a rough estimation of what I can get for around that price, but I reckon you guys will probably be more knowledgeable than myself on this topic.

So far this is what I've been looking at:

Core i5-4460
HyperX Fury, 8GB, DDR3-1600
Cooler Master G, 500w
Cooler Master K380
Seagate Barracuda, 1TB
Samsung DVD Writer
MSI H81M-P33
MSI GeForce GTX 950

Grand total: R10 009

I see you've just said that the GTX 950 is trash but I saw Fallout benchmarks where it did quite well against AMD cards. Is this a false promise?

Do you think there will be any Black Friday deals to make this a little sweeter?

EDIT: I see you've linked to Carbonite. Tried to make an account, but while moderators accept my account I am not able to view the links. Is this site legit, and how does business work with traders?

You will have to get a heatsink for the CPU though seeing as they are all oem tray CPUs which exclude a cooler.

I'll look at the rest of your build later, do you really need a optical drive? I'm pretty sure we can get a R9 380 4GB card into your budget with the savings on the CPU ;)

Will get back to you later.

EDIT: Just did a very quick slap together on wootware and the entire system (including optical drive) with R9 380X + i5-4590 comes to R10043, how does that sound?

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly.

That sounds a heck of a lot better than what I was looking at. Unfortunately the optical drive is important enough for me to have one, I work with video and need to be able to burn CDs and DVDs on occasion.

Does that R10 043 include a CPU cooler? I've never done anything like that, but I have a friend in IT who could probably put it together for me.

permanentmarker,

R1700 - Intel Core i5-4590
R299 - Raijintek Aidos Black Edition 92mm PWM Fan CPU Cooler
R810 - MSI H81M-P33 H81 Series Intel H81 Express LGA1150 M-ATX Desktop MotherBoard No front USB3 support!
R784 - Corsair CMV8GX3M1A1600C11 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL11 1.5V 240Pin Desktop Memory
R749 - Western-Digital WD10EZEX Caviar Blue 1TB 64MB Cache Sata6G 7200rpm Internal Hard Drive
R199 - LG GH24NSBO Internal SATA 24x Super-Multi DVD Rewriter
R3999 - PowerColor AXR9 380X 4GBD5-PPDHE PCS+ Myst. Edition Radeon R9 380X 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Desktop Graphics Card
R666 - Coolermaster RC-K380-KWN1 K380 USB 3.0 ATX Desktop Chassis
R835 - Antec 520C Neo Eco 520W ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V 80 Plus Bronze Certified Power Supply
R10041

R879 - MSI Intel H81-P33 ATX Motherboard This is a better MB with front USB3 support
R592 - Cooler Master K380 Case USB3.0 with Side Windows - No PSU Same chassis but cheaper
R732 - Corsair Value Select A - 8GB DDR3 DRAM Desktop Memory - 1600Mhz Bit cheaper here.

Dunno if you wanna buy from a single store or not but you have options above.
Only spec'ed a sing 8GB DIMM in case you want to upgrade to 16GB in future alternatively feel free to go with 2x4GB sticks.
Unfortunately Wootware is out of stock on Super Flower PSUs so I went with the Antec, I think the EVGA 100-B1-0500-KR 500B 500W has Super Flower internals but I'm honestly not sure and it's about R100 more.

Yip & better than the stock intel one as well ;)

See parts list above, if you split the order with Takealot you get a better MB and the build comes in at R9984, under the psychological R10k :p:D

For <R10k you're getting very good bang for your buck here.

Black Friday is around the corner so wait & see as maybe you can save from that.

Thanks for all your help.

Just a quick question about graphics cards and brands: how much of a difference is there between brands and GPUs? I've never heard of PowerColor so a little scared of pulling the trigger and finding issues.
